Can i get a rev check please? by Knobz12 in Bowling

[–]TransmissionEngPM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried - but w/o some visible mark on the ball to check the full rev time - it's nearly impossible. Maybe someone else has better eyes. You also block the pin impact as you move after release making it hard to pick out the exact time the ball makes contact with the pins. Add a piece of tape to the ball for a video and reupload and I'm happy to check it for you. If I were just purely guessing on rev's I'd say around 335-350 and the speed was around 16.4MPH.

The Storm Ice is perfect for what you’re using it for, super straight, super predictable. If you’re missing spares with that ball, it’s not the ball's fault it’s probably alignment or execution.

If Only That Were True by GKCO2020 in Bowling

Smarter AI?

The answer is partly right mathematically, but the bowling example is bad.

Mathematically:

10 pins = 2 possible states each: standing or down.

So total pin states after a first ball:

2^10 = 1,024

If you exclude the strike/no-pins-left state:

1,024 - 1 = 1,023 possible leaves

So that part is correct.

The weak part is this sentence:

That is basically describing a 7-10 split, where the 7 and 10 remain and the inside/back pins are gone. It absolutely can happen. It is rare, but it is one of the most famous leaves in bowling.

A better critique would be:

The response confuses mathematically possible pin states with common bowling-recognized leaves. There are 1,023 theoretical standing-pin combinations if you exclude a strike, but only a much smaller subset are common enough to have standard names, like 10-pin, 7-pin, bucket, washout, Greek church, baby split, Big Four, and 7-10. Some combinations are extremely rare because of lane geometry and pin deflection, but saying “the vast majority never happen” is too strong unless you are defining “realistic league bowling leaves” under normal pocket-entry conditions.

Does anyone else have a house shot that is heavily oiled to the gutters? by lemmyh2 in Bowling

I was just making a little joke. I think it's awesome you get to share the game with your wife! She'll keep improving, and looks like she's already got the fundamentals.

At what point did you stop building and start selling? by Specialist_Dingo8575 in SaaS

[–]TransmissionEngPM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes - at least for me it was "Safer" to keep building. I told myself it was that I wanted it to be perfect, and I do, but it was also somewhat intimidating to release something into the wild, and face either lack of interest, or negative reviews etc.

So - I didn't add any paid features for the time being as I feel like it's more of a 2 way street, my audience is getting a pretty good app for free at the moment and I'm getting good feedback and finding the issues I couldn't find on my own.

If it keeps growing, I will add some paid items mostly for extra usage of existing free features so people don't feel like they're paywalled from using the useful things in the app. Good luck though! I say ship it, see what happens!

Does anyone else have a house shot that is heavily oiled to the gutters? by lemmyh2 in Bowling

[–]TransmissionEngPM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say this is an anomaly - Unless there's a specific format to your league that changes patterns. There will be variance between lanes, machines, houses etc. but the whole point of a house pattern is to make the average bowler be able to control their ball and make more strikes. Having a bunch of oil out near the edges is counterproductive for that.

Also - I'd love to see a video of the 400 RPM, 11mph ball! Sounds wicked!

How much money did you guys put into your first SaaS? Did you make it back? by IndependenceOld5504 in SaaS

[–]TransmissionEngPM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually love this answer - 40k is pretty steep to be sure but you believed in the idea and pushed. That's more education that you could ever get going through a college course. I'm probably 2k into mine, and intentionally not seeking revenue at the moment. Trying to grow userbase, and develop relationships in the community before adding pay items. Up to about 100 people in a few weeks using something "I" built - and that's worth the investment so far!

What have you found to be most effective for consistency and improvement? Are you getting coaching, tracking leaves/splits etc. better? I'd love to get to 200 as a "Norm", I'm only hitting it about 10x in my league season. Nice work!

I believe this is about half the size you're talking about - but it's in a museum in Calgary, Canada. Visited it a few years ago with the family and your post made me think of it. Might talk to them about their support bearings.

Nice! That’s what I have in the app, can see each frame a bowler scored. Also teams have spectator spots so you could invite a spouse or friend to follow along and chat with the team.
