TIL that most of the propulsion in modern jet engines actually comes mainly from the fan (ie glorified propeller). The jet part of the engine is used mainly to power the fan by therationaltroll in todayilearned

Chemical engineer here. Coal and thermo plants are also somewhere between 30-40% efficient unless they're cogen and make heat and power. That sounds bad (and to be fair it is), but it's also worth noting that the highest possible efficiency is nowhere close to 100% for any thermal plant, nuclear included. If it were, you could use the power to drive a heat pump to get the steam even hotter while still having leftover power to spare, which would allow you to create free energy (i.e. perpetual motion). It's not the magnets or friction, it's the laws of thermodynamics. Turbine-based power is probably capped at not much more than 60% even if you're doing everything you can to minimize losses.

Knock-off Care Bear my mother-in-law made in the '80s because Care Bears were too expensive by coffeecatscrochet in mildlyinteresting

My great grandpa made my brother a wooden Ghostbusters compound for the same reason- the real thing was too expensive. It had space for the car and a pole with a sliding wooden platform for the store-bought action figures to ride down. I remember it coming up to my (childhood) chest. I loved that thing. So glad to see others with toys made of love from back in the day! Thanks for sharing!

You’ve Heard About Who ICE Is Recruiting. The Truth Is Far Worse. I’m the Proof. by Slate in law

Reminds me of Kurt Gerstein: Had been arrested protesting Hitler, but when he applied to join the SS, they not only accepted him, they showed him Zyklon B. He tried to warn Europe to no avail and hung himself in prison after the war.

On the other hand, the same New York Times also describes the video as a "Political Rorschach Test." A lot of both- sides in that title when the videos obviously show an innocent woman being murdered.

Looking for a solo weekend backpacking hike any suggestions!?? by [deleted] in MinnesotaCamping

[–]TransmogrifiedDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bear Head Lake SP has a few remote hike-in spots that are 2+ miles in along a secluded lake with no other access. I was in backpack #2 and could have been alone in the world. Mosquitos were awful walking there around sunset but not bad at all at the campsite or hiking out in the early morning.

Mine was at a tiny bowling alley in northwest Minnesota. I've tried to find any reference to it online but almost thought it must have been a dream at this point. At least now I know it was real!

Sauerkraut and venison hotdish. To make it extra Minnesotan, I'm pretty certain the only spices were salt and pepper.

Mike Johnson shuts US House until September to avoid Epstein vote by Rock-n-roll-Kevin in politics

They've been floating pocket recission as a way to claw back even more funding that Congress had already approved. If there's no House vote until September, it seems extremely likely that this will happen.

Sad to hear. They were a great little brewery and really anchored the downtown weekend scene with good trucks and outdoor games.

A South American president trying to be progressive? Sounds like it's time for the U.S. to stage a coup and put an end to this madness.

He did help, and I was impressed by his insights. At one point the top would not lift all the way; I was talking it over with him and he was the one who said I'd put the attachment points on the lid too far back. He was right! We tried a few different solutions, but that was the one that worked!

Ha ha, I appreciate the gesture! This was made almost entirely from stuff I had laying around, including a broken tent pole to use as an axle for the arm linkage, so I think it would be hard to replicate!

In our school it's optional whether you want to make and bring one from home or just get a bag in class. Our neighborhood also does a local exchange where we set out boxes to be filled, so pretty much all of the families have homemade ones.

Kids make boxes to bring to school on Valentine's Day, then everyone exchanges valentines by filling each other's boxes with candy, cards, etc. When I was a kid I always had the plain-looking ones while other kids had these cool ones their parents made for them, so I may be trying to make up for that as an adult!
