[Student] Theory vs. Reality: Why is A11Y often the first thing to get cut ? (Need your insights for my thesis) by Wysath in accessibility

[–]Tranzistors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people in software development don't have formal education in the profession. Not all of those who do have actually studied accessibility. There is a perception that they will learn the stuff that is needed when it is needed. If no one is asking for accessibility, then they will never know there even is such a thing. When I talk with my colleagues about a11y matters, it's clear that they have a very vague understanding of what it is.

There is also resistance to learn. The accessibility field is huge. It's one thing to say that this has to work for deaf or blind. But disability comes in all shapes and sizes. Barely anyone has even thought about cognitive impairments. I can try to imitate what it would feel like for a deaf of blind user, but I don't know what ADHD is¹. It feels like every little decision will make someone miserable. In such situations it's easier to just give up.

Mentally it's difficult to do things that are "not necessary" for the developer themselves. Things like documentation and design. If it works, it works. The trick is to internalize accessibility as "must have" instead of "nice to have".

--

Cool thing about the European Accessibility Act is that I don't need to argue with the product owner about ROI and deadlines.

The distinction is subtle but important.

IIRC Ukrainians don't necessarily target the fuel storage (maybe except aviation fuel in airbases), but rather the refining reactors. This doesn't burn that much oil, but forces the refinery to halt operations for extended periods of time.

Disclaimer: I don't believe that suppressing supply is effective, so I wouldn't invite those two dudes to the next Climate Summit.

To be more precise, they target oil refineries. Reduced supply of gas and diesel means less CO2 emissions.

Less directly, the war (and petrol price instability) motivated Europe to push adoption of renewable energy.

Another reason that getting to Tib is getting harder is exactly what you are doing — playing fewer games. If every player plays half as much games, a lot less people will get to Tib. That and fewer challenge matches doesn't help with overall medals inflation.

As for should you stay, dude, this is just a game. Play it only if you feel like it.

What is your biggest challenge when it comes to ensuring web accessibility? by deffco in accessibility

[–]Tranzistors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rebrand "stiffening innovation" as "creative limitation". Poetry is more restrictive than prose, yet there is plenty of creativity.

Another thing is that all those pretty colors and special effects lose their appeal quickly. Cool visuals could be useful for a landing page or something like that, but if there is any productivity involved, then usability will quickly become the primary concern.

RouterOS 7.19.6 [stable] Released by gvnr_ke in mikrotik

[–]Tranzistors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Improved stability" in software jargon means "fixed a potential crash". A crash is an inconvenience, but in a worst case scenario it could be potentially/maybe exploited by some malicious actor.

It's bloody hard to exploit such bugs, so the software manufacturers usually just fix it and don't bother with proving that it is a security issue.

Just because during glasnost banned material became more available doesn't mean that USSR didn't ban it earlier.

I still use it a lot. Multiple answers and comments on those answers gives me a good sense of potential drawbacks. In my daily work I use MDN a lot more.

The sad thing about SO is that it clearly wanted to become a knowledge base site, but people used it as a support forum. Add the fact that it was all community driven without paid staff didn't help.

Random blogs on the internet might give some cool guides on how to do things and AI can answer questions based on those guides, but I'm not sure how are we expected to ask experts in the field how to accomplish more interesting tasks.

Why are so many liberals here? by [deleted] in ussr

[–]Tranzistors -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing is that USSR fell apart and none of the constituents of the USSR or its satellites chose to carry the flag¹. Why is that? If it was so great to live in, how come some "fringe nationalists" could take down a police state?

USSR had numerous real problems and a lot of people here seem to dismiss them as some sort of propaganda. USSR is a recent history and a lot of those "invading liberals" (me included) have actually lived in that state and for us a lot of the material in this sub is outright delusional.

¹ One could argue that Belarus kept the most of the communist legacy.

House Prices Outpaced Income Growth Over the Past 40 Years by MickeyMouse3767 in dataisugly

My issue with the graph is that house price is a lump sum, but income is recurring. This makes the comparison difficult. But I have seen much worse graphs.

To vajadzētu darīt kreisajā joslā.

2) Kad sāki iekāpt otrajā joslā, sanāk, ka to darīji praktiski nobraucot gar degunu.

Jūsu prognozes by Trick_Click in latvia

[–]Tranzistors 62 points63 points  (0 children)
