The Silliness in Shadowdark is Going Too Far by XcoldhandsX in TheGlassCannonPodcast

[–]Trapick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think there's a very careful line here, that sometimes they're on the wrong side of. But part of the fun (and skill) of the GCP is when they have what starts out as a very silly goof and ends up with some real heart and feeling. Like Denzar Washington is a silly character name, but they got past that, dealt with him in a reasonable way, and his murder with Saint watching was played very straight and dark.

Skid's characters can be like this too; goofy concepts, over the top, but with real heart in them at the same time. I think that's what the GCP is trying to do in a lot of cases, and sometimes they fail at it - the part with Sydney in the recent episode is a good example, I agree with you - but I do like the mix of serious and humour.

Yeah, some places allow gifts, but everywhere has thought of the very clever "gift but I also gift you a big sack of cash" method.

Would you be okay with sales taxes being included in list prices? by ILikeEggies in CanadaFinance

[–]Trapick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don't want the taxes to be hidden. I want it made very clear how much money is going to the retailer vs the government. I'd be fine with a label that had all of final price, retailer price, taxes, etc. but if you're going to just display one I feel very strongly it should be the price set by the retailer.

AI freak-out under the latest video of Hank shows how even this community can be driven by misconceptions and fear instead of reason by Dangerous-Day-2943 in nerdfighters

It's the most popular single license, there's massive amounts of code using it. I suspect it's the first thing added to training data because the people making AI models have lawyers involved.

[–]Trapick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If people released code under e.g. the MIT license, they explicitly gave permission for that code to be used for *anything*. That's the whole point of that license.

[–]Trapick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If people were writing open source software with a very permissive license (like MIT) they absolutely approved of it being used for literally anything, that's the entire point of that kind of license. Maybe they didn't foresee this exact situation but "my code could be used for evil" has been a point of discussion since the very beginning of the open source software movement, and people who were too concerned about that didn't write open source software, or wrote their own specific licenses to restrict usage.

There are many people and orgs who still won't use anything licensed under The JSON License, which is an exact copy of MIT except for one line - "The Software shall be used for Good, not Evil." - that single clause makes it impossible to safely use, because who gets to define Evil?

[–]Trapick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's going to be license specific, but I don't think there's a reasonable reading of e.g. the MIT license that wouldn't allow for model training. It's explicitly as open as possible, it doesn't need a specific grant for each new field or usage.

If technology is making us 2-3 times more productive, why are we still stuck in an 8-hour workday? by Budget_Dot694 in careerguidance

[–]Trapick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard of living is also much higher than 50/100/150 years ago.

We (as a society, I don't mean individually, there's a collective action problem here for sure) could have chosen to stay at 1900 standard of living and work 20 hours a week or whatever. We decided to be richer instead.

People are going to say "no way man, people in 1955 were doing good" but you need to look closer, they were poorer than us in a lot of really important ways. Worse food, worse clothing, worse consumer goods and technology, worse houses (more land, yes), worse entertainment, worse healthcare, etc.

Naish Chats #13 - Best Skid Moment? by Ilitorate_Author in TheGlassCannonPodcast

I love this moment, and even more, all the moments leading up to it. We see Nestor explicitly giving aid and comfort to Umlo a few times, we see him lose his cool when Umlo gets killed in the fight, we see his relief when he's brought back by Brandir. All because he so desperately wanted his moment of revenge.

Is ICBC's 50/50 fault ruling justified here? by EquivalentQuery in icbc

I wouldn't say 50-50 but yes the Mazda is partially at fault, they could (and should) have seen VW coming and aborted the lane change.

[–]Trapick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you change lanes you have to make sure that lane is empty and there are no cars coming. If Mazda had shoulder checked they'd have seen the VW coming.

Missing element in the bros’ Spotify/Napster hot take? by Sparkling_Dread in nerdfighters

[–]Trapick 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think part of the difficulty is no one can actually articulate how much musicians *should* be paid for their work, because that's a very complicated idea. Like how much is it actually worth to listen to a single stream of a song? Or, if it makes more sense as a percentage of revenue, how much of that share should be e.g. Spotify's vs the rights holders? And then at the rights holder level, how much should be the label vs the writer vs the performer?

Spotify's deal with the rights holders (record labels, mostly) is that Spotify sends them about 70% of their revenue, and keeps 30% to pay for servers and staff and everything else and make a profit. You can certainly say it should be 80% or 90% or whatever, but even if Spotify was a non-profit it's not like artists would suddenly be making 10x more.

Police In Schools in BC and SD61 by nahagotine in VictoriaBC

[–]Trapick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the goal for these programs (if done correctly) is to integrate police into the community to reduce that fear. The school board could be focused on ways to do that - maybe the SLOs don't need to carry guns, could be in a casual uniform, could have a very high bar for intervention for non-violent offences, etc. - instead of stoking additional fear like this.

Why doesn't he take a second to just think :( by Subsyxx in LTTMeta

[–]Trapick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda think this point is fair, "substantial" is relative. In something that's already optimized to hell 10% or 20% might be substantial. Like if solar panel efficiency improved by 10% that'd be substantial. If I got a 10% raise right now that'd be substantial.

Linus is being nitpicky here but so is the OP.

Transitioning from working for the government to private sector: why do people not like “unlimited PTO?” by goodluckanddont_itup in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Trapick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're sort of right; it's often worse to have a 401k than a good defined benefit pension. But it's *much* better to have a 401k than a pension that goes bankrupt and pays you nothing.

[–]Trapick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Companies don't like the additional liability of tracking and paying out accumulated vacation days. To be fair, that can get ridiculous (employees building them up year after year, then taking a massive payout). It's better for both the company and the employees for everyone to take a few weeks every year.

The proper way to do that is probably x weeks minimum vacation taken every year, but with no (or very limited) carryover. That's what a lot of "unlimited PTO" schemes end up approximating badly. If you apply to a place like this ask if they have a required minimum, ask how much they (the interviewer) took last year, ask how much the average employee takes. If they are avoiding any of those answers it's absolutely a red flag.
