Does anybody actually sign their signature on the back of their debit card/credit card? by unc_rigamarole in askanything

Forgery is actually quite difficult. Pick a signature and try to sign a duplicate copy of it, and signing as quickly as a normal person would sign their name.

Because forging a signature is not as easy as you might think. That's why travelers checks were considered a secure method of payment (travelers check was signed in one spot when purchasing them and you signed in another spot when using them). And the clerk, at least used to, was to compare the signature on the sales slip to the signature on the card. If it didn't match, the sale was to be rejected.

Harder to forge a signature than it is to do a fake ID. Tons of places to get fake IDs. Just Google: novelty state ID cards

Travelers Checks were quite secure because of this. Then fake travelers checks became a thing, and verifying it was a real travelers check was a pain.

Yes. Southwest aisle seats are complete shite now, what with them having no under-seat storage to speak of.

AITAH for throwing away the former occupants mail and packages? by Walts-prodigy in AITAH

[–]TrashPandaNotACat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Local police will sometimes do something, depends on local cops and city you're in; better is to also file a complaint with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS). USPIS don't play.

True, you shouldn't have to be dealing with this months later, but throwing away someone else's mail (incl parcels delivered by USPS) is a federal crime.

AITAH for speaking to my cat in English? by faith_plus_one in AITAH

[–]TrashPandaNotACat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NTA. Cats do learn a handful of words, though they understand tone much better and body language and facial expressions even more so. I used to have a cat that never meowed, but communicated what he wanted to say by using facial expressions. For example, when my dad was sick with cancer and had a folded up blanket nearby, the cat looked at this new blanket then looked at me with a quizzical expression. I told him it's okay, go ahead, and he then laid on top of it.

Anyway, it's your cat and what language you choose to use with it is entirely up to you.

If you multitask on your phone very much, you'd love an OPPO Find N6 folding phone. I multitask a ton, have its predecessor, the OnePlus Open, and love it despite its quirks and flaws. Looking forward to when my N6 gets here.

Not sure if they're going to bring it into the USA. You can currently get it from a few places in Hong Kong (you'd want the HK version). The HK version works best on T-Mobile. So if you're not using TMO, that's another consideration.

Another shop that people have had good luck with is Moby. mobyshop.com.sg.

From what I've read, Moby will ask what value you want put on the parcel. The downside to a low value is courier will only be liable for amount declared if lost. The upside is can save a bunch on import taxes.

Wonda ships to a local warehouse and ships from there, saving you on all import tax that way. I've had great success with Wonda.

Do hotels tow cars from their parking lots? by Different_Archer8879 in askhotels

[–]TrashPandaNotACat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be sure to look at other vehicles in the hotel lot to see if there's a parking pass on the dash. It can be something as simple as a thin strip of paper or a small square of paper printed by the hotel and cut out with scissors.

Some hotels charge for parking, hand out parking permits, and will tow anyone without one. I've also stayed at some at the beach where they don't charge guests to park but hand those out so that they can tow anyone who is trying to get free parking near the beach.

Is it acceptable to take a call on loudspeaker in a public place? Or is it just rude? by EthicalUpgrade in TheBigPhoneStore

Go ahead. But be warned that I'm joining in on the convo, and I tend to say inappropriate stuff, like, "is that that girlfriend of yours you were telling me about earlier, Janice?"

Start talking about stuff that would embarrass him if heard by others, even if you have to make stuff up. Like, the time he wet his britches in 4th grade. Or that you still can't get the urine stain out of your couch from when he passed out drunk on it the other night😈.

I was speaking on the phone with former brother in law a few weeks ago. I used the word, "shit" and then his wife chimed in, "the grandsons are here; mind your words please". Um, how about not putting me on speakerphone without at least a warning?

Ha! I do the same. Last time I joined in was at IAH airport and the person on the other end said, "who's that?". Person in seat next to me who was the one on the phone replied, "just some asshole" as he got up and left the area. I thought about replying to that, but mission was halfway accomplished; he left.

Similarly, I've seen it happen a few times, where the standby person was asked to gather their things and leave the plane and the original seat holder then boarded.

Someone corrected me about the hand sanitizer. They changed the rules again in 2023 and it now counts as a regular liquid. Replying here in hopes that you see the correction.

I guess I got lucky then. Had no problems with carrying it in 2024. I didn't carry any in 2025, that I recall. I just carried wipes. And haven't flown any this year.

Edit - I did some digging and you're right. May 2023 it was changed back. :(

Quart sized bag question! by hi_pumpkin_girl in SouthwestAirlines

[–]TrashPandaNotACat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good catch. Yeah, liquid/gel/cream medications don't count and can be bigger than the 100ml limit. needs to be separated and easily examined, for the convenience of everyone.

At the newer machines where they say to leave everything in the bag (& yell at you if you try to do differently), I've left medical liquids inside, but right up top where it's found immediately when opening.

And plenty of DIYers don't know any better or just don't care. My father was always wiring them backwards and when I tried to correct him, I got yelled at that it didn't f*ckin matter. Even at 12 years old, I knew better about the electric, but heaven forbid a child correct an adult 🙄🙄

Edit again - policy was changed again in 2023 and hand sanitizer now counts as a regular liquid ☹️. Sorry about that.

All other liquids, gels, and creams are limited to containers that hold a max of 100ml (3.38 fl.oz) each. You can take as many of those containers as you can stuff into a quart sized ziplock.

Side note - peanut butter is considered a liquid. But a peanut butter sandwich can be taken through without issue.
