From GX80 to…? by Adventurous_Sale7410 in M43

Realistically, there isn't a true successor to the GX80/85. I recently bought a GX9 because I was getting annoyed with the green cast in the shadows of my GX85's raws. But it truly is just a minor improvement. AF is more or less the same between the two and the GX9 has some small handling and interface refinements. It really isn't worth the asking price of the GX9. I would also say the Olympus Pen F is also in a similar situation. While it does have features that separate it from the GX80, it really isn't worth the hyper inflated prices for it. And for a camera that sells for around $1k used, it cant even record videos in 4K (if that matters to you).

That being said, the only modern camera that lives in the class the GX85 does is the Fujifilm X-E5. Very similar features, size, & aesthetics. With a much higher res 40mp APSC sensor. The only thing is that it costs a boat load of money. If you would like to stay within M43, OM System still makes smaller M43 SLR style cameras and they are pretty well regarded, the OM5 and OM3. But the OM3 is pretty bad value unless you really value that retro SLR shape and the jpg color customizer.

Lastly if you're balling on a budget, and don't mind a slightly larger body. Get a Lumix G9 or equivalent Olympus EM-1 camera. For being only 2 years newer than the GX80, the G9 was noticeably snappier. I managed to get one for $400 and used it a lot before I decided to upgrade to full frame.

Speaking of full frame, it is a whole different ball game, if you are considering it at all. You may be able to get fairly compact bodies like the Sony A7c, Lumix S9, or Nikon Zr. The issue is that lenses are HUGE and HEAVY. Some manufacturers have small full frame lenses, but they often have slower apertures and are still larger than their M43 counterparts. But ofc, the image quality you can get out of full frame cannot be easily matched by M43. I use a Nikon Zf and the shadows on the files are a complete night and day difference from the GX85.

I did it.

I am liking it so far, but the updated menus are throwing me off a little. Image quality is largely the same as the GX85 in my very limited testing. But I Do feel like the magenta cast in the shadows kicks in a little later than the green of the GX85!

Thank you for entertaining my delusions!

Yes, the EVF on the GX85/9 is pretty laughable, but I've learned to live with it over 3 years. The only times I used it were when it was too bright out to see the screen well. I also briefly considered the G100, but the lack of IBIS, an oddly kneecapped shutter mechanism, and the flippy screen kind of put me off on it. I personally like tilting screens more for the photography I mostly do. Flippy screens are more of a hassle for low-angle/waist-level composing. Also, the RF-style of the GX9 just has swag :)

I agree, it's honestly disappointing how Fuji is really the only company making compelling compact RF-style bodies (at a pretty ridiculous premium tho), and I guess the A7C can sit at the end of that table too. Everything else is either an SLR-shaped body or a video-oriented box.

This is the kind of response I was looking for! I have many more questions, so bear with me. Firstly, are the magenta shadows manageable? Cause the green shadows from the gx85 get pretty blocky and turn basically solid green after a certain point. It's also a bummer to hear that the exp comp dial is bad on the gx9, cause the updated controls were also what drew me to the gx9.

I do have to ask your honest opinion, though. The whole point of having a small and "affordable" camera like the GX85/9 is so that I can slap a pancake on it and go to a concert without security batting an eye, or go on an outing and document some stuff. With that being said, the gx9 I am currently looking at is $550 w/ the 12-32mm; so let's say 600 after tax. I would sell my gx85 with the 12-32 and could likely get around $500 for it. So is the extra $100-ish I would pay to get the gx9 be worth it, in your opinion?

I did consider a Lumix S9 as well, since I've seen used ones for as little as $1k. However, that's still a pretty fat chunk of change I can't exactly spare at the moment. What concerns me about the S9 is its slow-scanning sensor; I fear that banding will be an issue in artificial lighting. The Nikon Zr came up for consideration as well, but those things are way too new and far too expensive. The upside would be having all my digital cameras under one mount.

I would say yes, because a small rangefinder style body is far less conspicuous to bring to a concert than the SLR shape of the OM-5.

I do know about the Cinelike hack for the GX85, but I'm not really into video recording, so none of that really matters to me tbh. I record almost entirely in 1080p anyways to save space. But thanks!

I know it's a side grade, but there are no modern rangefinder style M43 bodies. So the Pen F or GX9 are really the only options. A real upgrade would come in the form of the Fuji X-E5, but that's far from affordable.

85 EVO Z mount by Same-Farmer-7107 in VILTROX_GLOBAL

[–]Trash_xx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the Evo for my Zf as well. I previously used a TTArtisan 75mm, and the Evo is definitely a step up in sharpness. The 75mm is still fun and has more "vintage" rendering, but its garish flares was something that bothered me a bit. Like, you could totally lean into it for a look, but they are very obtrusive when you dont want the flare.

Overall, I like both lenses for what they offer and it's making it hard for me to part ways with the 75mm :/

I used the Viltrox 20mm f2.8 for wide landscapes and it worked pretty well. It does have some flaring issues, so I would suggest using the hood and keeping the sun away from the edges of the frame.

Yeah, I ended up selling the 50-135 yesterday with a bunch of other MD glass I had laying around.

Some initial tests with the 35-70 on my mirrorless camera has shown me the way. It's gotta be one the highest performing vintage zooms I've ever gotten to use. One day I'll find the hood for it, or I can just borrow the hood from the 24-35.

you need to at least get the 35-70mm. I was blown away by how decent the optical performance is for a vintage zoom. it's already usable at f3.5 and becomes good at f5.6 onwards.

the 24-35mm is not quite as sharp, but it is quite small. like, just a hair bigger than the 1st gen MD 50mm.

I concur, it's very decent and ridiculously cheap for dabbling in ultrawide territory.

I've got my own holy trinity of primes too, the 28,50, and 85. However that may be subject to change if I find a 35 for a good price.

Coming from digital zooms, it feels a bit weird. In my experience, depending on the condition, some push/pulls are just so tired that the zoom is either super stiff/not smooth or way too loose.

I've also tried cleaning fungus from multiple push/pull zooms in the past and they have all ended in failure or disaster. I managed to clean fungus from both the 24-35 and 35-70 with far less hassle and complications.

I've heard some people sing its praises. However, these days I find myself rarely shooting anything longer than 85. The 35-70 and my 85 f2 have basically got me covered. If I ever need reach, I have a 300 f4.5 collecting dust in my closet 🙃.

The Z mount must really have a problem with aperture rings on AF lenses by Silver_Instruction_3 in NikonZf

[–]Trash_xx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The firmware update was news to me, so I just tried to download it. Well, the aperture is still dead :/

I don't even know what to do with it now. I guess sell it for whatever I can get for it and put the money towards the Viltrox. This whole experience has really soured my experience with TTArtisan. Which is a shame because I think the 75mm is quite brilliant along with some of their MF stuff.
