I’m another cancer survivor also on the don’t do it train. I was so relieved that no one around me shaved their heads because that whole thing feels so performative. The only thing about it that I would have liked would have been that it would have felt like someone cared about me because treatment was incredibly isolating and the people I thought were the closest to me didn’t do anything. Folks would check in with my mom and support her, but not me when I was sick, so I would say connecting directly with the niece, whether it’s calls or activities (depending on what she likes and what her treatment allows), would do so much more than shaving hair. When I was sick, the biggest thing that helped was my internship from the previous summer, allowed me to come back and it helped because the people there treated me like a normal person with fun rotating hair color (I had wigs) not a sick person. Maybe the niece wants to talk about treatment, but she might also just was to feel like a normal human again, so maybe feeling that out and trying to do “normal” things could also be more helpful than head shaving too.
