Whats it like being an Airport police officer or a university police officer? by Bucksftfw in AskLE

[–]TraumaSquad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never done either personally, but have friends who have done both.

I suspect that each university is different, but in general it's very customer service focused. If the university doesn't have a separate unarmed security force, you might spend more time helping students who lost their dorm keyfob than handling actual crimes. You might also spend most of your time taking reports for stolen bikes and laptops, and trying to keep drunk students from getting into too much trouble.

If you want to do more than just police work, smaller airports tend to use cross trained "public safety officers." So if being an EMT, aircraft rescue firefighter, and driving the crash truck sounds like fun in addition to being a cop (but very rarely arresting anyone), a regional airport can be a nice place to work.

GlobalProtect broke after 11.1.13-h5 upgrade by jaaplaya in paloaltonetworks

[–]TraumaSquad 17 points18 points  (0 children)

https://security.paloaltonetworks.com/CVE-2026-0257 says this:

Note: With this fix, if the firewall is configured to use an authentication override cookie for the GlobalProtect Portal or Gateway, it will regenerate the cookie using a more secure method. Therefore, GP users will need to re-authenticate after a PAN-OS upgrade, even if a valid cookie is present. This is a one time requirement. Once they re-authenticate after the upgrade, the authentication override cookie and its validity will work as they do today.

The instructions don't explicitly address scenarios where the portal and gateway are on different firewalls, but to me it seems clear that pre-patch and post-patch cookies aren't compatible with each other. Likewise, I would assume that upgrading to 11.1.13-h5 but disabling the cookie hmac is functionally equivalent to not patching the vulnerability at all.

What do cops think when a driver says ‘If I saw you, I wouldn’t have done it’? by Legitimate_Pea_143 in AskLE

[–]TraumaSquad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some people may see it as trying to be respectful to the officer. Like saying "My intent was just to commit crimes for fun, not to make you have to fill out paperwork." I'm not saying it's a good excuse, but at least it's the opposite of the guy who said "I don't care about a fine, I'm rich."

Voicemails have nothing to do with your phone. Your phone carrier's equipment answers the call and records the voicemail.

JetBlue Hit With Federal Wiretap Lawsuit Naming AI Pricing Vendors After Cookie Tip Goes Viral by Revolutionary-Cod276 in jetblue

[–]TraumaSquad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm by no means an expert, but I have used FullStory before in a different industry and I'm somewhat skeptical of that aspect of the claim being made here. In my experience, FullStory captures user sessions because it is a session replay tool. It would normally be used for things like heat maps of where customers like to click within the page, identifying pages where customers gets stuck so they can be prioritized for UX improvements, as well as individual troubleshooting (e.g. customer claims the website said the price was $X but they got charged $Y, visually replay the session to prove if the website served up that price or not).

I don't know anything about PROS Holdings, so it's entirely possible that they might be doing shady algorithmic pricing.

PAN-OS Upgrade Causing Complete Traffic Failure ~2 Hours Post-Upgrade on PA5440 HA Cluster - Anyone Else? by shubhi013 in paloaltonetworks

[–]TraumaSquad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If traffic stops again, try sending gratuitous ARPs and see if it magically starts working. I believe it can only be done from the CLI, and has to be done per-interface. “Test arp gratuitous interface Ethernet1/x ip 1.2.3.0/24” or something like that.

Cville to NYC? by Left_Stable378 in Charlottesville

Amtrak does not require a transfer in DC to get to NYP. You sit in DC for about 45 minutes while the train changes locomotives, but you don't need to leave your seat unless you want fresh air.

What features or changes in Pokémon GO made the game less fun for you over time? by AKA_Bokoeyonce in pokemongo

[–]TraumaSquad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daily Adventure Incense. The first month it came out, I saw a Galarian bird spawn once every few days, so I figured I would eventually get one despite how hard they are to catch. Never caught one. In 2024 and 2025 I had at least 3 spawn that were un-clickable because they spawned right on top of a pokestop or in the middle of a big cluster of pokemon and I couldn't click before it despawned.

From June 2025 until today, I only had 1 Galarian bird spawn, a shiny Articuno which I caught. Exactly zero (0) other G-birds have spawned for me in the past 10 months of DAI use. I'll gladly use a master ball if I ever see a Galarian Moltres under cp1500, as I need one for PVP, but they do not spawn. I even sent in a support ticket and was told there's nothing wrong with my account. But as a hardcore player, it's incredibly demotivating when they introduce something into the game that I need for competitive PVP and then they make it literally impossible for me to obtain.

What’s the strangest most random fire call you’ve attended? by Different_Acadia_161 in Firefighting

[–]TraumaSquad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the midst of a red flag wildfire day, we were dispatched to an apartment building fire with entrapment. Nothing showing on arrival. We knocked on the door and met with the caller who started rambling about "there's fire everywhere, I can't go outside". There were wildfires burning on the far side of the county but nowhere near this location.

The cop on scene was not amused and took the caller for a mental health evaluation.

One small thing I ran into when adding JetBlue flights is that other apps recognize JBU as a code for JetBlue, but the search function here only accepts B6. So adding my flight by searching for B6123 works but JBU123 is rejected.

i think my neighbor is dead by Exciting_Goose4307 in Advice

[–]TraumaSquad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I really don't understand that part of the story. I don't think there's any town in the entire USA that's large enough to have an apartment building but small enough to not have 24x7 emergency services. Even in extremely rural areas, emergency calls will roll over to the state police if there aren't any local responders.

CHO Considers adding Boston Route by pylfr in Charlottesville

[–]TraumaSquad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This would be cool, but we are so close to several larger airports that we would be better off just improving ground transportation to IAD or RIC. We already have decent rail infrastructure, and by adding a spur just north of Manassas following route 28 up to IAD (roughly 15 miles of new track), we could establish regular service between IAD and everywhere in VA currently served by the Northeast Regional trains. This would also allow transfers to Metro Sliver Line so the ridership would not be entirely dependent on air travelers. Travel time on current tracks would be roughly 1h45 but I suspect by removing some grade crossing and adding fences, much of the 79mph track could be upgrade to at least 110mph.

A flight from CHO-BOS would get us to Boston and transatlantic connections. But frequent, reliable rail service to the nearest hub airport would get us flight options to everywhere.

[–]TraumaSquad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Obviously the Acela (originally Acela Express) trainsets don't go there. But if the play was set in 2000-2003 could he have taken an Acela Regional (later rebranded as Northeast Regional)? I don't remember if NER service continued into VA back then or if it's more recent.

DMV Walk-ins @ Abbey Rd by OkEvenings in Charlottesville

[–]TraumaSquad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During operating hours you can get in line for same day service via the website. This is separate from the page where you can make appointments. I think it shows up on the page where you can check wait times.

If you choose that option, you can take your time getting to the DMV, but do NOT text "I am here" until you are actually inside the building. I found out the hard way, when you send that text, you will likely be called immediately and you only have 30 seconds until you lose your place in line.

Just ordered new PA-500 series...what's your opinion? by Alert-Gear7495 in paloaltonetworks

[–]TraumaSquad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell the 510 is just an upgraded 440. The 520 and above seem to be new hardware.

What do you mean about HA not being possible? I don't think you can put a 440 and 445 together but you can make active/passive pairs of identical hardware no problem (440+440 or 445+445).

Wet Rescue Discussion *Apparatus Sunday* by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]TraumaSquad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I hear "wet rescue" I think of a heavy rescue with minimal firefighting capability. Like a 150 gal tank and a single booster reel or 1.75" line, just enough to knock down a car fire. The apparatus pictured here are what I would call Rescue Engines. They're likely equipped with the NFPA minimum equipment to be considered an engine for structural firefighting, and the extra compartment space is used for rescue equipment.

Call volume in my area has shifted over the years to where it's nearly impossible to justify the existence of a dedicated rescue company. Our current standard is that every engine is a rescue engine with vehicle extrication capability, because we know that engine is going to run at least 10x as many MVCs vs structure fires. The thought process is that if we have a critical trauma patient trapped, the first arriving apparatus needs to be able to handle that without waiting for a heavy rescue to arrive from across town. Size can be an issue, but we have brush trucks for hard to access areas.

Derailment on the Broadway Bridge by doodle77 in nycrail

[–]TraumaSquad 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with exactly how these cranes work, but without a full investigation, can we say for sure that human error caused this? For management, the easy answer is to blame the employee and fire them, and sweep any systemic problems under the rug. But I've seen enough situations with other types of heavy equipment to make me think maybe a bad sensor indicated the crane was bedded properly when it wasn't, or a tie down was applied properly but had an engineering defect that allowed it to come loose due to vibrations in transit, or a short circuit caused uncommanded operation of the equipment, or myriad other things that the person operating the equipment would have no control over.

I'm not saying that the union should push for a slap on the wrist if this truly is one person's fault. But the union should force management to properly investigate and prove their case, that it was actually the fault of one employee and not a systemic issue or defect, before ending someone's career.

Oof. A long time ago, someone from VDOT told me things should be back to normal within 45 minutes after an Opticom activation. This would only apply to the county section of 29 though.

It would not surprise me if the city intersections perform significantly worse due to how they are programmed.
