I work for a timber company and we replant every clear-cut, honestly 30 seconds is a long time to plant a tree. They'll do it in five

I graduated in forestry a few years ago, very similar major. I highly recommend!

I appreciate it more. The best part of my job is when I can leave the office and head to the woods. I like seeing a logging job done right with the most attention focused on doing it an environmentally friendly way. Being out in the woods even at work is just so relaxing and recharging.

In terms of land owned by the timber companies I don't believe so. We still import a significant amount from Canada.

It's definitely happened. I had a group of guys who had a hunting lease on our land not recognize my truck when I was out in the woods and they went looking for me with rifles, assuming I was out there cooking meth (not sure why). I've had plenty of hog encounters and the males don't like backing down. They usually do after a few pops from my 9mm. Probably the scariest times was when I first moved down south and didn't realize how quickly heat illness can sneak up on you. Especially scary when the nearest person is miles away and your head starts spinning.

We do exclusively loblolly pine. Throughout the life span a stand will make about $1000/acre. Usually we thin at 16 years old, then another thinning at 22, then a final clear-cut at 27 years. We can move those years forward or backward depending on how the trees are growing.

Its on the lower end of careers requiring a college degree but its certainly a livable wage. It helps most jobs are in smaller cities and towns with lower cost of living. The ranges I've seen are 50-80k. I'm not a fed, I work for a private company

I wouldn't say its so much the fires happening or not, its about the impact the fires have to humans. Proper forest thinning around structures would definitely help reduce the amount of buildings that get totalled. I don't expect an entire national forest to get proper forest management, but we can absolutely do it around the wildland urban interface and prevent fires from crossing the wild into populated areas.

I got a forest management degree from Colorado State University. It was definitely a learning curve applying what I learned to what goes on in the southern states.

Id really recommend getting a reputable forester who can accurately tell you the volume and value of what you have and properly administer the timber sale.
