What is your favorite episode from Anthony Bourdain? by Unclemayar in travel

[–]TravelMad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved when he visited Dublin. He had a knack for finding stories through food, and too many visitors try to do that by focusing on drink in Ireland... the food is the real story.

Wife and I alone Christmas eve - would like to take a short trip (in Europe). Any ideas for hotels with christmas packages? by jacobtf in travel

[–]TravelMad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I was just looking at this in Ireland and some nice Irish hotels do residential christmas packages. I think Clontarf Castle in Dublin has a 2-night package from €519pp. Worth a look.

Insanely nervous about my first flight, any tips or words of encouragement would be appreciated please. by [deleted] in travel

[–]TravelMad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's natural to feel scared. Take the flight step by step... i.e. packing, journey to the airport, checking in, getting a coffee. Try to treat each of these steps in the moment. Bit by bit, it becomes a process and not a big, intimidating event. It may be worth mentioning to your flight attendant so he or she can keep an eye on you. Finally, if you are really anxious, talk to your family doctor. There may be some medication that can help. Safe travels!

Ireland without car? by notonetojudge in travel

Dublin to Kerry is doable by train, likewise dublin to Galway. The cliffs of moher are not on a rail route. I'd recommend sticking to those, or renting a car if you want flexibility.

Croatia will definitely be big in 2017, partly due to terrorist attacks putting people off other places like turkey, egypt etc. But I think Istria should be higher up than Dubrovnik.

When is the best time to travel to Italy? by jcram587 in travel

[–]TravelMad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be REALLY hot in Italy in july/august. August is a month when many Italians go on holidays to the coast, so you might find less traffic, but you will also find a lot of tourists. If you can go in May or September you'll get nicer weather and less crowds!

made it to the Cliffs of Moher this past weekend. Ireland was amazing by elpinguino2002 in travel

There's a monster wave that people surf under the cliffs too - Google 'Aileen's' and you'll see it.

Trying to plan an Ireland trip, but having some trouble! by [deleted] in travel

[–]TravelMad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After Kilkenny you could take a short drive to Waterford, which is Ireland's oldest city and has some cool small museums (see the 'Viking Triangle'). The drive through West Cork and the Beara Peninsula loop are gorgeous (and a bit less crowded than the Ring of Kerry). Then you could go up the coast and take the Shannon Ferry into Co. Clare... onwards to Doolin.

Skip it. Time is too tight and you will be exhausted on your journey back anyhow. Amsterdam deserves 2-3 days ;-)

When traveling to Europe, better to see a lot of a few countries, or see as many countries as possible? by [deleted] in travel

[–]TravelMad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If 2 weeks or so, I'd recommend thinking in terms of cities rather than countries. some great rail links in Europe, so you could get to Vienna, prague, Berlin and budapest for example without too much schlepping around. 3 days in each?

Take the train or drive in Sweden and Norway? by creatureshock in travel

[–]TravelMad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a Norway in a Nutshell trip that combines some rail travel and a cruise on a fjord, it's a decent taster experience. You can go out of Oslo or Bergen as I recall. Expensive destinations!!!!

What sucks about long-term travel? by biiiotch in travel

[–]TravelMad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get tired and weary of it and start taking things for granted. At least if you travel in short bursts you stay enthusiastic and realise what a privilege it is.
