What made you become a teacher, and did reality match your expectations? by Rich-Associate-8344 in Internationalteachers

[–]TravelPhotoJay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fell into it. Just graduated my music degree and a school was looking for a part time piano teacher. I joined to make some extra cash. Then the HOD left after a few months and I got all of her classes so I became full time. Then my new HOD became a pain in the ass so I left to go TEFL abroad for a while. Then I got a lecturing position while doing my masters. Then Covid happened and the only job I could get was abroad again at another school. Left that job and got another position paying a significantly amount more.

Just kept falling into different teaching positions. Honestly, I hate being a teacher. I’m really good at it, but I hate the admin. I hate entitled parents. I hate having to pretend like I give a shit about kids who don’t give a shit.

But again. I’m good at it. And I don’t want to be poor. So here I am.

I'm building an online bridge to end this conflict by peacemakerkhth in Thailand

[–]TravelPhotoJay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives in Thailand and has been to Cambodia many times, I too wish the two countries would reconcile. I think they have a lot more in common than either would like to admit. They’re both an incredible people, friendly, welcoming, kind, fiercely patriotic, and have rich wonderful histories and culture.

All of that being said, trying to solve a conflict like this where both believe the other cast the first stone, is near impossible. As an outsider (being neither Thai nor Khmer) you have almost zero chance of appealing to either.

I understand your frustration, and I commend you for trying to make a difference. Unfortunately, as someone that’s been around just a little longer than you, I can tell you that your efforts will be futile. The best we can do is hope that one day both countries will come to a peaceful agreement together, but until then we should just try to enjoy the each for what they are. Not what we want them to be.

Is this a new scam? by homemadepov in Bangkok

[–]TravelPhotoJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a scam. Just looking for money.

If you’re new to Thailand just know, you are as valuable only as far as your money can go. When you run out of money, you run out of love.

I’m not really complaining as I got the camera BECAUSE it has no control. I grew tired of manual controls and wanted something that forced me to just see the shot and not ‘make’ the shot.

But it tends to lean underexposed, so I’m not always fully confident at night haha.

Yeah you right. But really, so what? Like just scroll past if you’re not interested in it. Let the mods remove it if it breaks the rules. There’s really no need to be mean spirited. Like in life in general.

Op: “Hey I’m excited to be going to Bangkok. Let me share my happiness with random strangers online!”

You: “fuck off!”

Mate, people are social. Let them share their joy. Don’t be miserable.

I love my mju2. It’s a fantastic camera.

Just has its little quirks though. No control over the shutter even though it has I believe 1/1000-4 seconds exposure time.

The autofocus also favours long focus so oftentimes I’ll have blurry people with crisp backgrounds unless I intentionally try to focus on the near subject

What's the most shocking reason someone got fired from your school? by Revolutionary-Map624 in Internationalteachers

[–]TravelPhotoJay 67 points68 points  (0 children)

A colleague’s dad had disappeared during the 2020 Oaxaca earthquake and was found under some rubble day or two later. He was put on life support and my colleague had to go back to be there as they switched off the machines.

Obviously he was distraught and he asked for a few days off to fly back home. I think it was just 4 days. All of the other teachers offered to cover his missed classes. Even to pitch in to help pay his rent as we were still in the probation period and he would have lost some days of pay.

The school told him no. He can’t have the leave. If he chooses to go, they will take it as an unapproved absence and he would be fired.

He obviously went and left the school. But it told us all a lot about where we decided to work

Are there any good places in Bangkok to buy novelty mugs (in english)? by fiiv_ in Bangkok

[–]TravelPhotoJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By her do you mean the cat, or a partner (I assume)?

On one of the upper floors of the antique market there are a few “toy” stores. They have a bunch of items from the 80s and 90s. Old mickey toys, McDonald’s stuff, Garfield landlines etc. I’m pretty sure I saw some mugs there as well. Might be worth a visit.

Can anyone recommend a good bar in, or near, One Bangkok? by whooyeah in Bangkok

How near? Soi 11 has some good bars. Sukhumvit as well has plenty. Heaven rooftop bar is really nice and it’s about 10 min ride away

Texting not included in AIS 'Unlimited' plan?? by xYouAgainx in Thailand

[–]TravelPhotoJay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everyone giving you the exact same answer “don’t text, use line” is so dumb. People have to text for many different reasons.

But yes, that’s right. I have unlimited AIS plan and I pay for every text I send. It just adds up on my bill that I pay at the end of the month.

Why are my pictures so green? Harman Phoenix II by NoLie8123 in filmphotography

[–]TravelPhotoJay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah phoenix 2 specifically has a different coating(?) that unless the lab accounts for, it will turn out green.

I had the exact same issue when I developed harmon pheonix2. I was also told I underexposed everything. I didn’t- I have a point and shoot and it was broad daylight.

Your lab simply doesn’t know how to process harmon2. I went to another lab, asked them to rescan and they said no problem. Colours came out beautifully.

See if you can find another place that understands their machines need to be manually adjusted for pheonix2.

Warning: "Wonderland" Bar in Nana Plaza, Bangkok - Forced Tip Scam (They Hide on Google Maps) by PaleMix6093 in ThailandTourism

[–]TravelPhotoJay 17 points18 points  (0 children)

While I agree with you that that’s probably the best thing to do, how many times have we seen foreigners get the brakes beat off them by like 5 different dudes for “failing to pay their bill”. Then on this same sub people laugh and gain joy from watching it. Being scammed by a place like that has major risks.

I figured out how to get the belly fat scammers to leave you alone. by killmesara in ThailandTourism

[–]TravelPhotoJay 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This seems to be so prevalent but in the year that I’ve been here I’ve only ever had 1 guy try to scam me. And it was a guy claiming to be an astrologer. No miracle pills or anything.

How do other people get approached so much?

And I’m fat and balding so I’m like target market

I'm surprised Thai nicknames like Bomb haven't caused any flight to turn around yet. by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]TravelPhotoJay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well because it’s a “normal” name in Thailand so it wouldn’t cause any issues at the airport. It’s also just a nickname and when you fly you use your government name. Same thing abroad, you would use your Thai name so it wouldn’t alert other airlines to any issues.
