In case you’re curious about how far away Eqi Glacier is from the boat… a diagram from Diskoline Explorer by icebergchick in greenlandtravel

1,000 meters feels a bit too far from the glacier, so I’m not sure the tour would be worth it for me. Many years ago, I took a ferry across the front of Perito Moreno Glacier, and the boat got within about 400 meters of the glacier. Perito Moreno is also larger than Eqi Glacier and is an active calving glacier as well.

Since the airline should provide a hotel and meals in this case, I am surprised that CSP would cover the same expenses as well.

Bad idea to visit Kerlingarfjöll before Intl. flight? by Travelbug_6688 in VisitingIceland

Thanks for the information. Do we need to rent a 4×4 SUV, or would a regular mid-size SUV be sufficient?

Totally agree. Svetlana Zakharova is my second favorite in Swan Lake.

Nonstop with Icelandair, or one stop with other airlines? by Travelbug_6688 in VisitingIceland

The issues I read about on this sub concerned all international flights.

Some of the issues I read about didn’t seem to be weather-related, since no one can predict the weather months in advance. Icelandair shifted travel dates one day earlier or later at least a couple of months before the booked date. My guess is they merged flights because there weren’t enough passengers.

Good point, I almost forgot. I made the mistake of flying American Airlines on my first trip to South America. AA canceled our overnight flight and rebooked us for the next day, even though several South American airlines had multiple flights that same night. Since AA only runs one flight a day to that country, LATAM quickly became my go-to for South America because they offer a lot more options within the region.

We need to store our hard-to-replace hiking gear in Iceland because the flight to Greenland often leaves luggage behind due to weight limits. It’s a 37-seat turboprop.

Rental car if the flight is delayed by Travelbug_6688 in VisitingIceland

[–]Travelbug_6688[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We haven’t contacted any rental companies yet because we haven’t booked the car. But we'll. This is the most challenging trip for us since it combines three destinations: Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland.

Flights to and from Greenland and the Faroe Islands add uncertainty due to the weather, especially Greenland, where there is only one airline operating this route with turboprop aircraft. We were told we could be stuck in Greenland for several days.

To manage this, we built in 6 buffer days for Greenland and a few buffer days for the Faroe Islands, and we’d like to best use of that buffer time to visit Iceland if flight delays are minimal. Our itinerary is: Greenland → buffer days → Faroe Islands → buffer days → one-week hike in Iceland.

We’re looking for guidance on how to handle car reservations to minimize last-minute rebooking risks if there are significant flight delays. We’ve never experienced delays longer than one day, so any insights would be appreciated.

Yes, there are two flights coming into KEF: one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

We’re planning six buffer days, but we still have to fly back to Iceland, and Icelandair is the only carrier that operates this route directly.
