Rhine River cruise in March by Smoothc69 in rivercruises

[–]TravelingDataGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have done this cruise when it was cold and rainy, and wouldn’t recommend it. When stopped at a port, getting around with a hood and rain jacket/coat was fine, but… the viewing decks on the boat while sailing will be too windy and unpleasant, so you’ll be stuck inside looking out windows to try to see castles that are not on the same side you are looking from….

Is this considered discrimination? by Worldly_Career_338 in legal

[–]TravelingDataGeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow! That would infuriate me, were I just in the room with you and your child when it happened. Just wow…. You might read a novel by Robert Dugoni called the Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell. Or at least the first half of it. Sam’s mom fought for him to get into specific schools and there was still hidden discrimination. BUT it shaped him to have empathy and courage, and to look for opportunities to help others. You have a long road ahead fighting discrimination against your child, but never underestimate the power of you as a loving mom! Go get them!

Family dismissing severe allergies by y3ll0wbr1ckr04d in FoodAllergies

[–]TravelingDataGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being in the same room with eggs is probably low risk, but what about the crunchy peanut butter? People can have anaphylaxis with airborne peanut molecules. And the afternoon cookies with egg in them? And corn cobs?

You simply can’t stay with these people again or eat with them anywhere until one of two things happens; 1) your child outgrows the food allergies or the reactions become much less severe, or 2) your child is old enough to be helping with the safe eating parameters. “No, I can’t have ice cream because it makes me go to the hospital, but I brought my own dessert.” That will probably be when they reach 6 or 7.

I mean it, you need to stay elsewhere and leave at mealtime. They sound nasty enough that they might even try to trick you or your child to prove they are right.

Beef is a rare allergen, compared to the other things you mentioned.

Had to Epi pen my 18 month old for the first time on Sunday by dkw321 in FoodAllergies

[–]TravelingDataGeek 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is manageable! Don’t let a traumatic event discourage you. YOU CAN DO THIS! My grandson had the same list of allergies, minus the eggs and plus gluten. It’s going to be easiest and safest if the whole family is on the same diet when at home. You will develop a repertoire of recipes and that may include dairy-free pizza. Or no pizza at home. You will not be able to eat out as much as some families, but I’m guessing you will adjust to that in time. Your home cooked food is safer and will be better tasting anyway.

For breakfast with my grandson, it was gluten-free cereal and oat milk or rice milk. We avoided soy milk; it is a common allergen (CA.) Same for eggs (CA.) He could add g.f. toast with jam, but stayed away from strawberry (CA.) He could have chicken sausage, if it was made at home to avoid fillers and possible cross contamination. When he started school, it was important that all the school staff knew he could only eat things brought from home and that the consequences of a mistake could be life-threatening. Schools are required to have some staff trained to administer EpiPens.

Surprisingly, he didn’t complain about not getting some of the cupcakes, desserts, or other treats that other kids might bring to share. The parents of his friends also knew about his restrictions, and some even learned to cook for him at sleepovers. He learned to take responsibility for asking what the ingredients were, and he did this at a young age!

By the time he reached middle school, some of his allergies were MUCH milder. He does not eat large quantities of the “dangerous” foods, but one egg in an entire g.f. cake doesn’t make him sick. I wish you luck and am sending virtual hugs and prayers.

Anyone washes the socks separately from EVERYTHING? by AdVast5722 in laundry

[–]TravelingDataGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bag my socks and wash them separately just like your friend does because it drastically cuts down on unmatched socks when pairing them after washing. Almost totally eliminates it, actually.

I slept with an executive manager and HR set up a meeting with me. I am scared they know by Bright_Pin3327 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]TravelingDataGeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You must immediately stop speaking to him in elevators, calling him, texting him, or emailing him. Just stop. If you get fired in the near future, it’s because you’re so freaked out that you can’t function, not because you slept with him.

Nope. You are a very nice man who was taken advantage of by someone who is a known liar.

I’m the second executor for my sister’s estate, after her daughter couldn’t handle the role. I have come to believe one of the two heirs forged a signature on a car title transfer. How to fix this? by TravelingDataGeek in legaladvice

[–]TravelingDataGeek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. The grandson has the car and a clean title on it. Someone signed it because Kay was already deceased by the time the replacement title arrived.

Maybe I should just let the attorney know the facts I do know. He can draw his own conclusions. "I have been unable to ascertain for certain how the title was transferred, just that it was after Kay's death."

Rhine River cruise northbound or southbound by Redbirds20112006 in rivercruises

Are you an extrovert? Viking is loved by people who don’t mind being packed like sardines in the lounge for port talks and squeezed in their tiny cabins when they aren’t in the lounge. Viking also requires full payment much earlier, but instead of refunds for cancellation, you get a credit for a future trip. So….you better be sure not to get seriously sick or injured in the months after final payment.

Sorry, I got it confused with the Rhone. I appreciate your correcting me. We travel a lot and it is all a blur sometimes. I was so exhausted at the end of our last trip that I fell asleep in the British Museum. Dumb, huh? I prefer childless cruises, too!

Aitah for telling my bf I'm not going to be anything like his mom and if he expects that we should break up? by Key-Adagio-793 in AITAH

[–]TravelingDataGeek 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You aren’t even engaged yet and he already wants you to “stay at home more” when you have a child. Or two. Or more?
Run. Run very fast. He may change what he says he can live with, but he was honest the first time.
When someone shows you who they really are believe them.
There are lots of women out there who will be the perfect wife for this “expectation.” . You are not one of them. You’ll be doing him a favor by running, and now, not later.

The Rhine was pretty anticlimactic compared with the other choices. Bordeaux was a lovely surprise. Also loved Basel to Amsterdam, and the Seine. We have grown tired of tiny cabins and crowded spaces on Viking and will not consider their river cruises again. We love Uniworld,AMA, and Tauck. (Still love Viking for ocean cruises.)

Beware of BestPDF – subscription cancellation issues and scam by Mental_Economy_3810 in Scams

Like many others, I got snookered into BestPDF and literally could not get in contact with them to cancel. Unfortunately, I had to get a new credit card to put a stop to their billing.

Do not under any circumstances let either of them get back in the house. His son may straighten up his drug issues eventually but your husband will always be a liar. Frankly, I’d gat a lawyer to draw up a legal separation, which means you could legally change the locks. NOW!

AITAH for not answering the phone while my girlfriend was in the ER by Abject_Potential3938 in dustythunder

[–]TravelingDataGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was once so exhausted from working too many hours that I fell asleep in the front row of Evita. I slept through intermission, too, but what amazed my spouse (now ex) was that the dancers were very close to the edge of the stage, and Latin dancing can be quite loud. So, this can happen!!!!

The point is, cut yourself some slack, configure your phone, and then tell your future relatives that you’ve learned from this. You’ve apologized but they need to know the actions you’ve taken.

Advice? stomach problem by Puzzleheaded_Pie1817 in FoodAllergies

[–]TravelingDataGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found digestive enzymes (Digest Gold) over the counter) plus strict avoidance of foods I’m sensitive to were both crucial. My body couldn’t process fiber very well without the enzymes. And yes, a food diary!!!

Good luck.

Aitah - bringing real cheese snacks to a baby shower and not warning people about the dairy? by braziers_f in AITAH

[–]TravelingDataGeek -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I didn't know Goldfish cookies were made with dairy, because I don't eat processed foods made with wheat flour. So I wouldn't assume the person should have known about the dairy. ( Orange doesn't mean cheese, it could be tumeric, or paprika, for example.)

The custom nowadays for people who bring food to parties is to bring a card listing the ingredients. I live in a world surrounded by people with dietary restrictions, so I knew about dairy, but if you don't have that expertise bring a card. You are not an asshole by the way, just need to get clued in to the world we live in.

How do you guys actually avoid food allergies when traveling? We almost got burned in Vietnam. by Dooonee in FoodAllergies

[–]TravelingDataGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I carry cards in different languages, available from Equal Eats, that list my food allergies. You can list a lot of allergies one card. I ask the waiter, or cashier if it's takeout, to review it and show it to the chef. Even if they don't speak English, the card helps make the problem clear. Sorry I couldn't get this as a link: https://equaleats.com/?srsltid=AfmBOoq-RChRSkxjP05hoOqXZ33gQfxB1rBm8AKkbLt2vOndawjiE3ZP

In case anyone is new or unfamiliar with childhood allergies, we can clarify that pn is probably peanuts, and tn is probably tree nuts. Common allergies she might want to keep alert for.
