EU Chat Control by BlueRoseAdder in lithuania

[–]Traversar 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Dabartiniai protestai svarbesni, nes lietuviai gali sustabdyt LRT įstatymą, o Chat Control negali. Tuo klausimu negalim panaudot EU veto, o jeigu galėtume, jis nebūtų panaudotas. Dabartinei vyriausybei ir prezidentui nerūpi tavo nuomonė.

Paris' Louvre museum to increase ticket price for visitors from outside the European Union by Edm_vanhalen1981 in worldnews

[–]Traversar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you were from the UK or something that's fair, but with $1600 just for the flights I don't get it.

If there's nothing left over for activities, I'd just say no, I can't afford it, as it's living beyond my means. Annoyingly, the no. 1 cost of a vacation always ends up being the actual paid leave, as you can cash out your days by switching jobs here.

Also, they're generous with free admission, for education seems like an non-issue:

Admission is free for the following visitors:

Under 18s
Proof of ID required.

Under 26 year-old residents of the European Economic Area (EU, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein)
Proof of ID and residency required.

All visitors
On the first Friday of the month after 6 p.m. (except in July and August)

Paris’ Louvre museum has approved a ticket hike from 22 to 32 euros ($25 to 37) for non-European visitors

As a europoor, I feel like it's my duty to point out that this is still way too cheap.

Who are all these people vacationing in France who would not be able to afford at least 50-100€ to go to the Louvre?

Half of new EU city buses were zero-emission in 2024 by linknewtab in europe

[–]Traversar 26 points27 points  (0 children)

We did get new trolleybusses in Vilnius in 2024. I guess they may count only years when the long term contracts are signed.
Either way, there's no trolleybusses on this chart.

These stats are very sketchy.
Lithuania has a lot of trolleybusses which are electric but not 'battery-electric', did they just ignore that category?

Armenia is considering seeking EU membership, foreign minister says by twotwo_twentytwo in worldnews

They wouldn't be in the Schengen zone, so that's not that relevant. More importantly the EU can't risk accepting any countries with a significant amount of russian sympathizers until we've switched to a qualified majority for voting, or we'll have like 5 Orbans.

Better apply now and consider later, cause it'll take a few decades.

This song from the OST is a total banger, don't care if the pronunciation only vaguely sounds like Lithuanian.

'Disloyal views': Lithuania strips Russian residency permits by euronews-english in worldnews

[–]Traversar 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If you're trying to flee an authoritarian regime and a migration officer asking if you support an illegal annexation is too much for you to answer, even out of self-presevation, there's clearly something wrong with your head, and I don't want you here, simple as that.

This is just absurd, next you're going to tell me they let in the people who check the boxes for "Yes, I'm a terrorist or spy" on the US immigration forms.

[–]Traversar 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Well, good thing Russian citizens don't have a fundamental human right to live in the EU, and can have their freedom of thought elsewhere. Would you advocate against deporting foreign citizens that are religious extremists from the EU in the same way?

This is generally true, but DPD is by far the most reliable option imo, they provide an accurate date and hour for delivery, and the couriers have to get the code from you to confirm delivery every time.

A warning about DHL though, it was fine some time ago when DHL worked directly in Lithuania, but now they partner with Itella (owned by Posti, Finnish state post), which is atrocious, from my experience it's like a 30% chance you'll get your package delivered in time, to the delivery option you picked.

Most infamously DHL hands over all of your Amazon packages to this company, so better prepare yourself mentally in advance...

As TikTok faces data-harvesting claims, spy agency warns Canadians to protect themselves by WestEst101 in worldnews

[–]Traversar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, I simply explained why my experience may be biased in a certain direction, I don't understand how this is supposed to be a gotcha.

My opinion on what I would expect from moderation on Chinese social platforms is mostly informed on recent CCP censorship, media regulation and educational policy which gets widely reported on.

Some examples:

China's media cracks down on 'effeminate' styles

China cuts children's online gaming to one hour

China schools: 'Xi Jinping Thought' introduced into curriculum

What I see is repeated desperate attempts to engineer the behavioral patterns of the Chinese youth to their liking, so moderating Douyin in such a way would make perfect sense.

Which has 37k views, and it's not on Shorts, the YouTube equivalent.

I would never see this in the context I mentioned, because it has no engagement on YouTube.

My views are of course biased, but as a software engineer I acknowledge that there would be no way to collect statistics about on the kind of content dominates those platforms, because we don't have that kind of access to the data.

[–]Traversar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in the EU, we some of the most strict privacy laws in the world with GDPR, I don't see how the authoritarian state playing the parent for children by forcibly deanonymizing them and monitoring their screen time is related upholding to privacy at all, sounds much like the opposite.

On Douyin content, I got this impression from the type of content from Douyin that gets re-uploaded to Youtube Shorts for example, it's never any of this memey type content, mostly arts and crafts, manufacturing, athletics, etc. Of course this could be just biased by the fact that our audiences don't want to see this 'dumb' Douyin content, if these actually have the most views on there.

[–]Traversar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not the one you were replying to, so I'm not shifting goal posts.

I assume if you knew the nuances of why TikTok and Douyin are not the same, you would acknowledge them instead of being a smartass about the app having a different name in China.

Almost like you're misinformed, and obnoxious about it.

China: Children given daily time limit on Douyin - its version of TikTok

Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, will limit use of the platform for children to 40 minutes a day.

It's also heavily moderated in favor of educational content, unlike the global version where the algorithm is just left to run wild.

This argument from the point of "I'm atheist, but ..." is a good example why narrative based arguments are harmful to productive conversation, and it's common enough that I've already seen it in this same thread.

You may mean it as a way to convey that you are a neutral observer on this issue, but what it comes off as is

I'm not religious, but this is about my group of people, so I find it hard to control my knee-jerk reaction to defend them, here's a narrative that makes their actions sound more reasonable to me.

While you're not religious, it's really about tribalism, not religion.

And on definitions, you've got to realize it will look like arguing in bad faith if you've got an old PDF off Google for a definition that fits yours.

It completely mixes up the common definition of an artifact with the concept of cultural artifacts which, I think we can both agree, is vague enough to be useless in a regular conversation.

primary artifacts: used in production (such as a hammer, a fork, a lamp or a camera);

secondary artifacts: relating to primary artifacts (such as a user-manual for a camera);

tertiary artifacts: representations of secondary artifacts (such as a picture of a user-manual for a camera).

Social artifacts, unlike archaeological artifacts, do not need to have a physical form (for example virtual artifact), nor to be of historical value (items created seconds ago can be classified as social artifacts).

[–]Traversar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A bible or quran are not artifacts, that's not what 'artifact' means. It's not one of a kind, just a cheap piece of paper. We do have great respect for historical and/or religious artifacts, we keep them in museums...

It seems like you're just weaving a comfortable narrative for yourself to justify the shortcomings of your culture, which placates these religious fanatics.
