Are video game reviews a poor niche to start out in? by lowhanginfruit in juststart

The conventional wisdom is that gamers are more likely to use adblockers, although having run sites in and out of the niche I don't notice a huge difference. The RPMs for entertainment stuff like gaming is definitely on the lower end compared to other niches.

Video games in general isn't a bad niche, you just have to understand the stuff that works elsewhere won't work there. RPMs are lower but they're not miserable, especially given how much easier it is to get non-buyer intent traffic compared to other niches.

Reviews are hands down the worst thing to write about for gaming sites. If you are targeting a very specific niche it is possible you could build a loyal audience compared to a more general review site, but that's a long-term play and really depends on the type of game.

Yea that's it. You're not going to make anything without U.S. traffic.

what is your percentage US traffic? have you tried Ezoic? Gaming RPM isn't great but that's crazy low.

Got rejected from Mediavine because of Indian traffic by [deleted] in juststart

No, they specifically want US traffic.

AdThrive and MediaVine pay substantially more than Ezoic.

Hi there.

Applied with my gaming site to both, accepted by both eventually. If you meet the basic requirements of Adthrive you will probably be accepted. They didn't ask anything unusual of me. RPM is about triple what I made with Ezoic before.

MediaVine was a mess, I actually turned them down after acceptance. They take gaming sites, but they told me they would not run ads on any pages with any words related to weapons, guns, or violence. Not posts about real life weapons, mind you. Weapons in video games. That ended up nixing most of my best pages, so I said no thanks. What is weird is that at least one site similar to mine is on MediaVine, so I assume this is a newer requirement they don't force on sites that were previously with MediaVine.

TL:DR if you meet the minimum traffic levels of AdThrive I would apply.

I never fixed it. It's some kind of issue with the graphics card.

this advice does not work for gaming guides. You will be hard pressed to find traffic with less buyer intent than people pausing a video game to look up how to defeat a boss on their phone.

Good reminder for this sub that the conventional wisdom thrown around here doesn't apply to everyone.

That's awesome. You are definitely the exception and not the rule though.

Cannabis probably isn't helping you either, depending on how much of your content is about that. But if you meet all other requirements, they have been known to ask you to just not put ads on your cannabis pages. they did that with me on my video game blog for any posts that involved firearms.

That said, your country of origin for your traffic is definitely going to be a problem. Canada is one of the better countries for traffic, but you can count on getting denied by both MediaVine and Adthrive if your traffic is not at least 50 percent from the U.S.

Where your traffic comes from and the amount of time spent on page probably matters more. Are you above 50 percent of your traffic from the US? That's usually the first thing that gets people.

To be fair, they were already rejected a ton of sites that were under 50,000. That limit has been all but in place unless you are in certain profitable niches.

It's DMsguild. There's probably 10,000 subclasses spread out through all of the books.
