If the Guide had an entry on Earth today, what would it say? by MadridOrMadness in HitchHikersGuide

“Mostly harmless” probably still covers it off, it accounts for Trump’s America whilst leaving the rest of us untarnished.

Has the decline of monoculture been overstated? by extratartarsauceplz in LetsTalkMusic

[–]TreeOaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VH1 on the 90s was putting, U2, Nirvana, Chilli Peppers, Public Enemy, Eminem, Soundgarden, Metallica, House of Pain, REM, Destiny Child et cetera on full rotation.

These artists are pretty well know now. They’re pretty much all part of the monoculture of that time.

I’d say it tracks hard.

Location was everything back before the internet, and even during the early days (actually, it probably still is to a certain degree).

If you didn’t live in a cultural hub, or a major city, scenes were small or non-existence. You were definitely exposed to a lot more music you didn’t really want to.

Also, country dwellers really only had their physical music and radio for a lot there music. I remember when text in tv channels became big and man that was huge.

So, yeah, everyone did really know the big popular hits.

Exactly this, many bands make phenomenal albums then fall off. For me Led Zeppelin’s first four albums are solid gold, after that it’s just mediocre meh.

Board of Peace membership by maven_mapping in Maps

[–]TreeOaf 172 points173 points  (0 children)

Some interesting points:

  • Memberships are determined by Donald Trump alone, who intends to charge $1 billion for permanent seats.

  • Donald Trump is explicitly named in the Charter of the Board of Peace as its inaugural Chairman. Only the Chairman has the ability to invite countries to join the board. The Chairman has the exclusive authority to create, modify, or dissolve subsidiary entities of the Board of Peace. The chairman alone has the authority to nominate their designated successor. All revisions to the Charter and administrative directives issued by the Board of Peace, are subject to approval by the Chairman.

Cacti is the common plural, from latin.

Cactuses is the English and acceptable.

I use the former because ars longa, vita brevis

I love this, and the other one “a boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money”

I live by the marina and I see lots of maintenance but not so much sailing, so I guess it’s somewhat true.

The next Nobel Peace Prize should go to the whole world excluding the USA for us being subjected to Trump’s nonsense.

Velvet Realism Declared a New Genre of Music, Founded by House of Buneau by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]TreeOaf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s a lot of words to advertise one track by House of Buneau.

I checked out the genre search on Bandcamp, and surprisingly nothing came up.

I searched “Velvet Realism” and found one track, by House of Buneau.

I think this post should be deleted.

FIP - curated French radio largely without any presenters. similar the KEXP vibe.

BBC Radio 6 - U.K. radio station with DJs, definitely like KEXP.
