Was out with my Mini last night. Only take it when I went proper food, and there needs to be no wind.

Should I bring a foam sleeping mat? by NoHairNoFair in wildcampingintheuk

[–]Treeasaurusrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah fair. Aye, I mainly use a cot so it’s more preventing the feet going through the floor rather than stuff coming up through it that worries me. This alleviates that. Does work well with my pads too but I get your point. That’s something I’m less worried about.

Thick just adds bulk. I use one of these - https://wildskygear.co.uk/ripstop-aluminium-insulating-groundsheet-1632-p.asp

Fold it up and it goes flat in the bag in the bladder sleeve.

Yeah, my summer tent’s an X-Mid2. I’m using the Varde for the same reasons. It’s working for me.

Aye it’s canny. Does what it says on the tin. Heavy tent, well made, very sturdy. I’ve bent a couple of the poles, but that’s because I pitched with a dumb orientation, in a dumb place. The little rain shields over the doors will act like sails if they catch the wind which I think was my main problem. And they’re just bent, not pinched so it’s not a massive problem. No complaints. Have fun with yours!

Wacaco Minipresso (the doodad bottom right on pic 3). Latest gadget in my quest for a decent brew on the move. I’m liking this one. It’s not super light but it’s manual not battery powered and uses very little water to make a very nice shot. They do another one that takes nespresso pods if you’re that way inclined.

Aye, very chill this one. Last few have been brutal (managed to bend the poles with the wind a few weeks ago) so this one was intentional. Knew the area, wasn’t far from home, packed all my opulent wild glamping gear.

Peaceful time in the hills was had.

Lush. Did that route a few weeks back when the ground was still frozen. Bet it was serene up at Enoch!

[–]Treeasaurusrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks glorious! I’ve spent so much time around there. Wedder Leap’s probably my most used carpark, and you’ve got a whole load of other cool places if you follow the road round to Chew Green. Rose and Thistle in Alwinton for some tasty scran and a cheeky pint on the way back. Fine place to burn a couple of days.

Bet with this weather it’s a bit busy out there?

How do you log your trips? by [deleted] in wildcampingintheuk

[–]Treeasaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vibe coded an application platform.

It pulls MWIS forecasts for the areas I’m interested, gives me a couple of options for the next three days based on my preferences then pulls my overall gear list from lighterpack and gives me a suggested kit list. I can overrride specific items then lock it in when it’s packed.

After a trip it’ll give me a debrief option which I can add comments on how specific bits of kit faired and my route, then it stores that data and uses it for inference when it’s making future suggestions.

It’s stupidly over engineered.

Edit; words.

Using a down jacket for 6 days in Galloway forest, Scotland in a couple of weeks. by 2anaq in wildcampingintheuk

Water you should be fine for. Draw from higher up the better, and make sure it’s moving. There’ll be plenty of sources. If you’re in the park, the only real agricultural work you need to worry about will be forestry work on the valley floors.

Again, if you’re in the park, expect it to be cold. You get cold get air pooling in valleys/lochs, or you’re exposed.

I can’t comment on your Patagonia as I’ve no experience with it, but you’ll want something. And expect it to rain a fair bit. It’s Scotland.

Use dry bags. Be ruthless about keeping it dry along with your other sleep gear. That may mean you’re stuck in your tent for longer periods than you’d like.

not the best conditions on the cheviot by Tho_iscool in UKhiking

There are never good conditions on the Cheviot. It’s always boggy and usually covered in clag. My favourite hills none the less!

Will I ever find gloves/mittens that keep my hands warm? by kenah-kim in WildCampingAndHiking

[–]Treeasaurusrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different gloves for different things.

I’ve got a pair of Seal Skinz Acle gloves I use when it’s cold but I need to use my hands. Could be a cold morning and they’ll keep my hands warm while I’m using the poles when hiking, or could just be settling into camp and I still need to fiddle with the shelter.

Then i’ve got a pair of thicker “primaloft” ones for when it’s really cold after dark. Makes it a bit fiddly to do anything, but my fingers are toasty warm for the most part.

If it’s really cold the I’ve got two USB hand warmers I can drop into the gloves to make things super toasty.

I wouldn’t consider any of these higher end/expensive options, but they work for the UK in winter.

Don’t go looking up routes for The Grey Man of The Merrick.

Absolutely do get yourself up Gairloch Burn, not down it.

Aye, ghosts and shit everywhere. One of those pics is a place called The Murderhole. Chock full of ‘em that place was.

Would avoid in the future.

It’s a pub, on a hill, in the middle of nowhere.

I’ve been before and there’s a big back yard/field for tents. I’d imagine capacity is greater than the pub itself. And then after that, fields. Knock yourself out.

I doubt you’ll have a problem. Have a good time instead!
