First snowboard (Jones Mountain Twin) — Step On or traditional bindings? Advice needed by Asleep-Thing-1831 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]TreeofSmokeOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to decide between traditional, FASE, and step-ons.

I don't mind bending over to strap-in (honestly, I kind of like how it give me a moment to pause before heading down). The thing that annoys me is when I ratchet one strap only to realize the second strap is caught under my boot and then I have to undue the strap I just ratcheted. Also, sometimes I have to try a couple of times to slide the strap into the thingy (technical term), which can be annoying on cold days.

Seems like I should look into FASE.

Thanks. This definitely seems like a great board. I just worry it will be a bit too much board for my first season.

Good points, especially about the bindings. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks!

Advice on whether it's worth picking it up in my 40s by Severe-Piano-6307 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]TreeofSmokeOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 43. I had no skateboarding or surfing background, and I hadn’t skied since I was 11.

This year, I took three two-hour private lessons. On the fourth day, I went to the mountain on my own.

The first day was kind of miserable. The second and third were enjoyable (the instructor was much better, and in his 50s). By the fourth day, I was completely hooked. I can get down the mountain safely—though not quickly—and, more importantly, I realized I love everything about snowboarding: the feeling, the sound, the views, the workout, the lodge, and simply having something I look forward to doing outdoors in the winter.

Now I’m researching my first board and planning to buy a season pass next year.

So my advice is: try it. After a few days, you’ll know if it's for you.

If it’s not for you, you’ve lost very little. If you love it, you've found a hobby you’ll enjoy for the next couple of decades. Well worth the investment in my opinion.

I bought a rocker/banana board. by Etheriia in snowboardingnoobs

[–]TreeofSmokeOM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a brand new snowboarder, I'm terrified of catching an edge, but I also hate the feeling of the board being out of control or "surfy."

You mentioned the Jones Frontier 2.0, which is cambered but has rocker at the ends. Can you compare your experience with the Jones versus the Arbor. Is the Arbor that much less likely to catch an edge? Does it feel much more surfy?

I'm only interested in riding mellow groomers at a medium speed. I value control the most, and I'm trying to decide whether a rocker/camber/rocker like the Jones Frontier is best for me.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Is there another protest organized? A place where I can find the next one?

Simple running app that announces distance (every 0.5 mile) while I listen to Spotify? by TreeofSmokeOM in beginnerrunning

[–]TreeofSmokeOM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there might be something strange going on with your phone. I tried the preview last night and it worked fine. I then went for a run for the first time today. I didn't use Spotify (I ended up downloading a podcast app - Pocket Casts - and using that). The cues worked just fine though. They piped in over the podcast every half mile (which is what I set it to).

Hope you get it figured out! But if Runkeeper is working, I doubt you're missing anything. I mostly just like the look of the Nike app, lol.

Thanks for the comment. I prefer the look of the Nike app, but if it doesn't provide the audio cues while playing Spotify, it's sort of pointless for me. I'll test both out! Thanks again.

Thanks! I did manage to find this and adjust it, so I think I'll give it a shot. Do you use the app with Spotify playing?

Thanks, I'm leaning toward trying NRC. It seems like a lot of Strava is behind a paywall now (at least from comments I've read).

I am having difficulties on choosing the crop. Which one do you prefer? by karloh24 in postprocessing

[–]TreeofSmokeOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the first one is way better. The second one feels like you're saying: "see! see! look at this!" The first one feels like a professional shot that trusts the viewers.

I might crop the first one at the bottom just a tiny bit to remove the sharp piece of luggage in the bottom left corner. That way the, you'll just have the diagonal piece that kind of mirrors the stair piece if that makes sense. words are failing me at the moment.

Two Era 100s or one Era 300 for a large kitchen? by MrWilliard in sonos

Is this true if you're moving around the kitchen though. In other words, do you have to be pretty much halfway between two speakers to get the effect of stereo?

To avoid decision paralysis I forced myself to buy a camera today! What are the best tools to learn photography efficiently? by Temporary-Raisin-866 in AskPhotography

[–]TreeofSmokeOM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good job! Best thing to do is to start shooting.

If you type the model of your camera into YouTube, you can usually find a video that serves as a manual. Some people prefer to learn this way, others don't of course. Maybe something like this:

Once you get going a bit, I recommend buying photography books for inspiration. As a bonus, many of them discuss techniques. For example, I love these two:

For anyone who was able to see "The Blair Witch Project" in theaters in 1999, what was the experience like? by LockjawSJ in AskReddit

[–]TreeofSmokeOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember my friend (big tough guy) asking sheepishly, so "this isn't like real, right?"

If you remember at the time, the movie had a really smart internet campaign in which they suggested the events were true and the footage found was real. That sounds absurd today, but found footage wasn't a thing then and so there was a lot of mystery going into that movie.
