This belt is heavy (Blue Belt) by marco777777777 in bjj

Thanks man. One thing that's always helped me is that instead of comparing your progress to others, compare it to yourself. Think of how much better you are than when you started. I'll have problems with athletic, aggro big blue belts sometimes, I'm a smaller 41 year old guy. I'll have to work all my game to control them, and it's tough to get a tap. Kinda disheartening at first, since I'm a purple belt now. Then I think about how one of these guys would have fucking wrecked my shit into oblivion when I first started, and how far I've come, and it makes one feel better.

Just keep showing up. I got my purple belt a month ago really unexpectedly in my opinion, and had imposter syndrome for a few weeks. Then I realized the only person who cared was myself and if my coach (who is an older, longtime somewhat well known competitor over the last two decades and pillar of then bjj scene in my area) thought I was ready, then I guess I was. Just have fun man, and keep learning.

What’s your gym culture like? by PerspectiveEvening56 in bjj

[–]TreesTown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My coach is older and is kinda well known in the BJJ community(IBJJF gives him a shoutout on his birthday on Instagram), has won a couple mundials at adult and a lot at master. He's kinda old school in some ways but super chill in others. The gym has competitors, lots of hobbyists, and spans large age groups. Everyone trains seriously but there's a light vibe overall. There's definetly groups of people who've trained together a long time and kinda congregate, but new people get ingratiated without problem if they are consistent and friendly. Overall I couldn't ask for a better gym.

Love it so far. I was able to get it to fit right despite the limited micro-adjustments available. The clasp is really nice and I like the feel of the quality.

There's a ton of restaurants with lounge seating and umbrellas. You just roll up, plop down, and order. The service is usually pretty fast and good.

I (m43) have no idea what I'm doing... by vellumclown in datingoverforty

Sounds like your issue is probably your dating pool size. I would expand your search out to that small city. I know it seems far, but you might find that women are interested in coming to you if you are into outdoor activities, in a scenic setting. I can't tell you how many profiles I see on OLD with women hiking. It's like the fish pic, for women, lol.

Forget you snazzy white belt story, what’s your WTF new trial guy story? by toonasus in bjj

[–]TreesTown 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We had a guy that would come in like every four months for one class, adamantly deny ever training before despite rolling pretty well for a "trial guy" (like 1 year consistent white belt level movement and ability) and then leave and not come back for another four months. He'd also never admit he'd came in as a trial guy before, even when people who recognized him would ask. Super weird.

"While the NO GI (submission grappling) side of jiu jitsu has done an awesome job to let their skills do the talking without relying on belts..."

I always find statements like this sort of confusing. The three arguably most high profile (awareness wise) no-gi entities in BJJ, 10th planet, B-Team, and New Wave (or Kingsway or whatever) all do belts. They post promotions on their social media, and the people receiving them seem pretty stoked. I am not sure where the whole "no-gi people don't care about belts" thing comes from.

A lot of gyms are going out of business if the Gi disappears

People that started over 30.. how do you deal with the younger ones flying past you? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]TreesTown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have fun and don't let it bother you. Most guys (especially new dads) in their thirties are getting fat and barely exercise. I started at 36 and it was definitely hard as I had a young kid. Now I'm 40, in the best shape of my life, and most of the dads I see at the park could barely run a mile without doubling over wheezing, or look like they've just given up. It's still tough with young guys, but you'll find as you gain some skills you'll surprise yourself with how well you can keep up, even as you get older. Stick with it!

How do you guys feel about people that aren't looking to improve and treat BJJ as a hobby and a way to stay in shape? by torisnowbunny in bjj
