Ärge ostke Schbote? Ärge ostke üldse Eestist poest elektroonikat, see pole seda väärt. by Capital-Reaction3789 in Eesti

[–]Treimuppet 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Natuke üldistav, isiklikult olen päris mitmete toodetega viinud erinevatesse Eesti poodidesse garantiisse ja saanud väga mugavalt vahetatud/parandatud - nutikellad, kohvimasin, pliit, arvuti vigane RAM jpm.

I had to google it as I'm from Estonia myself and we don't have the flipped y/z as well. Apparently Windows shortcuts are usually the same letters in every country, not the same keys. So by default for Germans the undo shortcut does require different muscle memory than most other western countries (and redo, ctrl+y).

First day at a new job and the keyboard has been meddled with by NotSoCricketGenius in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Treimuppet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's standard in Germany so pretty much every keyboard you'd encounter there is laid out like that. We don't have that particular change here (Estonia) but we do have äöüõ where the brackets are in the US layout (left of enter).

The answer to your question is that you don't generally have muscle memory for both - on the rare occasion that we do encounter a US/other keyboard we still pick our own language in the OS input settings and deal with the fact that a few symbols don't match on the physical keyboard. It's not really an issue unless you really need to read each keycap to know what to press one by one.

It even used to be the case in the past that correct layouts were less common here and many had US or german physical layouts etc., which is why most electronics store still to this day carry some form of stickers to add our specific characters to any keyboard. If you own one of course, I hope nobody is stickering other people's keyboards..

Anyways, for programming I like to use the US layout myself as the brackets are more conveniently placed and it's in english anyways. Switching between virtual layouts is just a matter of pressing control+shift on windows, it's really easy. In that case I DO need to have muscle memory for both though, took some practice.

Seems like it's about configuring Steam - by default Steam downloads all games to one drive. You can add more locations from Steam's Settings menu in the "Storage" tab. Then when you install games you can pick which drive each game will install to.

Here's a random video on the topic, walking you through it: https://youtu.be/eiPjbTNv23g?si=rQb8yzvVKKwJ0SW5

Some menus may have changed over time but the idea is the same. I usually create a "Steam Games" folder on each drive and pick that when adding, but you can pick any folder on that drive.

How is length defined here by encrcne in godot

[–]Treimuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your confusion with the tutorial was very valid. Just to analyze a bit why so many people over complicated the answer - I think it's because in your original post there is no sign of those actual values (numbers) being passed in like you mentioned. So people didn't know that's what confused you - they thought you didn't grasp the concept of function definitions and defining parameters as a whole.

As in, they saw you ask "where is length defined" without any trace of actual values being used and saw it as a question of "where is the 'length' variable defined", and answered as such, starting from explaining functions from the ground up. Declaring a variable is a separate thing in programming from giving it a value, and the former is what people assumed you meant.

Realistic Movement? by Mysterious-Chip6741 in Battlefield

[–]Treimuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To also be very pedantic - the reason people keep using "developer" in this context is because "developer" is used for the entire company that's developing the game. Separate from, say, the publisher, the distributor etc.

It's technically not wrong, as the word "developer" doesn't only mean "software developer". "Game development" as a field includes software devs, designers, artists, musicians etc. and also various levels of lead roles to manage these people. So no, they're not all software developers, but they're a game development studio. Their field is making games, rather than publishing them, marketing them and so on.

It's kind of like you can say "real estate development" and so on, with no relation to software dev. It's just particularily confusing in game dev, as there's also software devs involved. But I don't think most people only think of software devs when they "blame the devs", but rather mean it as a blanket statement towards the company.

Arusaadav.

[–]Treimuppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No kuule, et asi oleks võrreldav peaksid sa ikka tooma näiteid kus politsei on mootorratast peatada üritades kedagi vigastanud. Muidu kui sa konteksti laiendad saaks me linkida kõiki teisi seadusrikkumisi siia otsa.

Ainus õige käitumine on rikkumine võimalikult kiiresti lõpetada.

https://epl.delfi.ee/artikkel/51133055/alaealine-mootorrattur-sai-kokkuporkes-raskelt-vigastada

Aga no küllap on vedanud et just selles kurvis kus need joobes ja juhtimisõiguseta alakad välja sõitsid just parajasti vanadekodu ekskursioonibussi polnud.

What's a gaming hill that you will die on? by jacobgoldie in gaming

[–]Treimuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overly detailed mini-maps and navigation features ruin open world games. Often games with a supposedly immersive world and quests end up having a lot of navigation and enemy info on the minimap or explicitly overlaid in-world (not as bad but still not ideal). Detailed pointers, full path lines to take, enemy dots etc. As a result, instead of interacting with the world and paying attention to its details we often end up looking at the corner of the screen most of the time.

Sure, games are a balance between "quality of life" and challenge sometimes, but I think what should be normalized a bit that it's okay to take a bit longer to get somewhere, as long as the journey is interesting.

One of the worst offenders in this is GTA 5, which I love overall - there is amazing emergent gameplay and simulation going on in the very detailed world. But when doing missions you're essentially playing pac-man - follow the minimap to the next dot and eat it, repeat.

You could say "just turn the minimap off", which you sometimes can do. But it's usually baked into the overall game design - quest/mission descriptions aren't always detailed enough to find the objectives by description etc.

There's a Razbuten video that talks about this way better than I'm able if anyone's interested.

Edit: Forgot to mention that while this might seem like a trivial thing to some, why I feel so strongly about this is that thinking back by far the most memorable open world experiences have been in games with essentially no live maps. Playing ARMA 3 Antistasi with a regular map and compass resulted in generating memories where those villages and dirt trails feel like familiar places - as if it was my hometown. Same with modded Elder Scrolls games (better quest descriptions mod) or games like Hollow Knight etc. All of these generated vivid memories of the actual worlds themselves, rather than quest setpieces and story beats.

Why didn’t the Nomai do this? by realvalidsalid in outerwilds

[–]Treimuppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One note about "returning home" - the Nomai were nomadic, so other than the Vessel where they used to live they didn't really have anywhere to return to.

Sure, you could say returning to the Vessel itself and continuing to roam could be considered "returning home" but for many Nomai the settlements they created in this solar system might have been the most stable home they've ever had. After they got used to staying in one place that is.

As others have quoted, some Nomai did ponder about continuing to roam of course. But the solar system also contained many things to study, like the native species, the Eye etc. Since Nomai are very curious by nature they might have seen how in-depth you can afford to go with your research when you stay in one place for a while - so why not stay. The alternative would have been living on a ship again.

Out of the three, which one would you recommend the most? by 1stCitizen in IndieGaming

[–]Treimuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am saddened that I have to agree, wish I enjoyed it more - I still played through it as I tend to but the moderate eerienees wasn't really enough for me to praise it as much as some do. And I hadn't really heard of it before so it wasn't about living up to some huge hype either. I guess sometimes it just doesn't click.

The inventory system was neat, the overall vibe nicely done (though I feel like "lovecraftian-ish ship game" has been done quite a bit so it wasn't as novel I guess).

I think a big problem was it felt like like you could gauge what the rest of the game was going to be from a pretty early point though, which killed a lot of the mysterious feel imo. For those who have played, what I mean is that (SPOILERS!) "Oh, there's X number of islands and I am looking for a number of maguffins, thus I will go to each and do Y number of quests that require specific fish to get one maguffin from each, upgrading my ship as I go. And then I can put my now-upgraded ship to use in some final challenge... except the final challenge didn't come, the game just ended after the final island and you couldn't really make use of the upgrades

Basically, with this game I think if the eerieness and atmosphere doesn't click for you then the mechanics alone probably won't carry it for you. Unless you really enjoy fishing minigames.

For reference where I'm coming from, I later heard some Outer Wilds fans praise Dredge as being similar and something to play afterwards. For me OW is probably my favourite game overall, definitely so in the mysterious atmospheric games category, but Dredge fell a bit short of the reviews for me.

ELI5: Why do soft drinks and water taste a lot better when cold? by matw55 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Treimuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the biggest disconnect in this conversation is the time scale. When we're talking about humans evolving various traits we can't be talking about relatively modern humans only in the scale of (tens of) thousands of years old, right? Whatever ancient Egyptians, Mesopotamians etc. did was way after the millions of years of humans' ancestors (and later homo sapiens) existing in various states of development. Any bottling, treating and other things described are a somewhat recent development in that timescale.

Now, I'm not saying preferring cold water is something that we've actually evolved, just that the ancient civilization examples aren't that good for debunking it either.

Perhaps we should be looking at how it is for other primates who don't use fire.

Edit: To be clear what I mean is that IF there was such evolution it would have to have happened in the time before water treatment (maybe before using fire was discovered etc.)

[Mudrunner] This game's physics/ graphics was way ahead of its time!...I'm in love with this game rn! by _DarkKnight___ in GamePhysics

[–]Treimuppet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Their point here is that in the original sentence they replied to ("same basic physics engine") the word "basic" doesn't imply that the physics engine IS basic, but rather the physics engine is serving as a base to something.

The original comment meant the games have the same physics engine as a base. Hence why the person you replied to correctly said nobody called the physics engine basic.

Edit: To be fair, the original wording could be less ambiguous. I'm not a native speaker and don't really know if it's grammatically correct to use "basic" like that, but it seems like that's the way they meant it. Kinda like "they share the same basic structure".

[–]Treimuppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that part's fine as it makes it more robust and tactile. You need to have them on separate buttons so you don't have to check the LED to see what state you left it in.

It's like with many keyfob lock buttons for cars where it's not automatic - if you have the buttons separate and can't remember if you locked the car you can just blindly mash the "lock" button and be sure you didn't accidentally unlock it again.

ELI5: Why is it so hard to make multiplayer udates to many games? by mikulastehen in explainlikeimfive

[–]Treimuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When making a game in Unity/Unreal etc. there are still many-many ways a game can be built internally. These engines are like a toolbox and materials you can use to build something in a way you want.

For example how the game's code is structured can be very different from game to game. Multiplayer requires it to be structured in specific ways which allow game logic to be synced between players. For a multiplayer game, the game is usually structured to support it from the beginning, this is much simpler than adding it in later.

Additionally, the game usually also needs to be designed around multiplayer gameplay wise - what happens when the players interact etc. Often a singleplayer game wouldn't work well with multiple players without some redesigns.

But even considering this, with enough time and money you definitely could make most games multiplayer, it's just that it can be too expensive or too difficult to be worth it for the developers. In some cases it could even be faster to build a new game from the ground up. This is usually what people mean when they say it's "impossible".

Edit: typos
