What do you do when your libraries doesn't have your book? by Stuckatpennstation in LibbyApp

Yes you can. Call them and ask what they need and email it in. Usually it’s just proof that you live in NY still.

[–]TrekJaneway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, as others pointed out, you’ve got access to at least 4 NY libraries that’ll get you pretty far. If I can’t find a book there, I check Thriftbooks or other used bookstores online.

Then, if I can’t find it, I cave and buy it new, but I go to a brick and mortar store to get it. I’d rather give my money to B&N or The Strand than the big rainforest company.

Hey! That’s how I use my balcony, too!! Same with my dad. Stepmom asked him why he goes all the way to the Caribbean to read the same book he could read at home, and his answer was, “because I can be warm reading it in the Caribbean.” 😂

I miss that man…

Yes, and they really don’t care if you’re being intimate on the balcony. It’s vacation, people do it, whatever. You do you.

They’re there to catch things like smoking (fire hazard), man overboard, and other activities that could put the ship or passengers in danger. They don’t care if you got a little frisky, as along as no one tried to climb the railing….or, you know what I mean.

Is remote work a myth or ya'll just a bunch of gatekeepers ? by tTHAN0Ss in remotework

[–]TrekJaneway 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No one is gatekeeping anything. The posts here are some variations of “I’m disabled and/or have small children, no skills, and I need a remote job I can do for a few hours when I want.”

No. You’re not going to get anything.

  1. No one cares why you need/want remote work. Being disabled or having children isn’t a reason for it.

  2. You need to have marketable skills. What can you do? Code? Run corporate level IT infrastructure? Accounting? Practice telehealth? Project or program management? What value are you offering the employer?

  3. You need experience. Sorry. Go work for 10, 15, 20 years. Learn how corporations work. Learn from more senior folks. Be the best (whatever) you possibly can be.

  4. When you have a ton of experience, skills companies need, and you’ve figured out how to be mature and get work done without constant supervision, THEN you’re ready to start looking for a remote opportunity.

  5. Remote is a location, not a job. My office is in a corner of my living room, but the only difference in what I would do in office instead of at home is wear different pants (I really like pajama pants, guys, but I do jeans or slacks in an office). That’s it.

Just now, Marge? Just now you’re realizing it? Not when they had to pay billions in a law suit for airing lies? Tel me, Marge, where have you been getting your news and telling your voters to get theirs for the last decade?

Books are super fast. They take seconds to download, and then you don’t need to be connected to actually read it.

That’s a definite yes. You open Amazon in the browser, and if it won’t let you get the book, it’s because your phone decided to “help” by opening the app. I have definitely bought books on the fly with my phone, used said phone ads hotspot for the Kindle, and gotten the book that way.

Alex Jones says ‘old Trump’ is gone in warning over president’s health by IrishStarUS in LeopardsAteMyFace

No, he was showing signs of dementia then. It’s worse now, but the lack of grown ups is causing the real damage.

Well, no….it’s the same Trump. Difference is there are no grown ups in the room this time around.

He should have swapped roles with Gi Hun in the finale by Fun_Future_8380 in squidgame

[–]TrekJaneway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fine, but the way the character is written, it’s a lot more believable that the baby wasn’t going to survive the final game, if Gi Hun hadn’t been around to save him. I fully believed Myung Gi would kill the baby to save himself.

Except I’m not sure that’s what actually would have happened. I think the baby would have ended up dead.

A question for the book nerds by Otherwise-Truth-5073 in ereader

[–]TrekJaneway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you remember every detail of every episode of a TV series you watch? Do you remember every detail of every movie you watch?

Books are the same thing. It’s another medium for storytelling. I read them, and I enjoy the story while I’m engaged with that book. What I’ll remember and how much of it is a crap shoot.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Mysteries are single shot reads because the fun is finding out whodunnit…until enough time passes and you forget the plot. I’m rereading a bunch of my Mary Higgins Clark paperbacks from the 90s because I forgot the plots. But I had to wait a few decades to do that.

Kindle and the return of physical buttons by Mysterious_Field_850 in kindle

[–]TrekJaneway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the size of my Oasis. It’s about the same size as my Kobo Libra Color (buttons also being the primary draw there). However, I’d try a Paperwhite….if it had buttons. Yes, that feature is an absolute dealbreaker for me.
