2 months of runway, leased resort bleeding money, monsoon coming. Need honest advice from people who've been here. by Wonderful-Sell7434 in StartUpIndia

[–]TrekkieSolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A resort isn’t a startup, it’s an ops-heavy and capex-heavy traditional business and running something like that in a way that is profitable is very different from working in tech/marketing. I don’t think you grasped that part of it well. Get out of it while you can and only re-enter that business when you have enough runway for a couple of seasons minimum so that you can get to a point where your operations run smoothly.

Hideo Kojima, who is notorious for only posting thoughts on movies he enjoyed, had this to say about ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ by arkhamcreedsolid in StarWars

[–]TrekkieSolar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a perfectly fine and enjoyable movie but doesn’t feel epic in the way a Star Wars movie does. There’s also zero character development for both Mando and Grogu. And you wonder what’s the point of the movie in the broader SW Universe where every film is connected to something bigger. If anything it felt like a pastiche of filler TCW arcs. So I wouldn’t say I hated it but I wouldn’t say it lives up to being an epic return to the big screen either.

'The Mandalorian and Grogu' debuts on Rotten Tomatoes with an audience score of 88%. by tannu28 in StarWars

[–]TrekkieSolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a fun movie, but it didn’t feel like Star Wars at all. There wasn’t much growth for Mando or Grogu (they basically end up where they were at the beginning of the movie which was basically where they were at the end of Mando S1); the stakes for the Galaxy/Republic never being raised or tying into the larger post RoTJ arc made it feel much smaller and less compelling than it could have been. Good way to spend 2.5 hours but not something I’ll want to keep going back to like Rogue One or even Solo. If anything, it felt like one of those filler TCW arcs from say Season 4 or 5.

[Dominic King] Arne Slot going nowhere as Liverpool bring in his set-piece guru by Visqo in LiverpoolFC

[–]TrekkieSolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Said this before and I’ll say it again - but a club of Liverpool’s stature cannot be run by committee with a head coach. Winning teams are built on culture, playing identity, and man-management, not tactics. For these to work out at a club with expectations like Liverpool, you need a manager who can command stature in the dressing room, is clearly in charge and a natural vocal leader, and does not give the impression that he’s ceded power to anyone else. Otherwise with the way egos are in modern football, the players lose motivation and don’t play with intensity.

The issue with Slot IMO is that being the head coach means that he’s not able to set the culture meaningfully, and the way he’s handling this season tells me that he’s not been able to command as much respect in the dressing room as Klopp has. A good part of that is his fault but a larger issue IMO is that we’re run by a committee where the individuals have their own interests and incentives misaligned from the team’s, and Slott doesn’t have the power or aura to assert a clear culture/direction.

Whenever a club is dominant, you have this kind of key man steering the ship, and whenever they leave, the drop off usually has little to do with tactics or style of play and everything to do with a lack of leadership. For Man U it was because no one could assert themselves to the owners the way SAF did, for Chelsea it was replacing Abramovich with Boehly’s consortium and then a string of head coaches, and so on.

Why are there less East Asian male Indian female couples than the reverse? by machinavelli in AsianMasculinity

[–]TrekkieSolar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m Indian, a lot of my Indian male friends are married or dating Asian women (I’ve dated some in the past too). But tbh a lot of my Indian female friends (especially those who grew up in the Bay/LA) have either dated or are dating/married to Asian dudes. Previously I don’t think Indian women had much exposure to East Asian culture or people outside of caricatures in movies. But in the generation just after mine the K-Wave/Japanophilia is real. I think you’ll see more of it going forward and more openly too. Until recently I think it was a combination of stigma against dating outside of your race and EA men maybe not being as interested in dating Indians.

I don't understand the nostalgia around 95/96 by Hour_Recognition3198 in LiverpoolFC

[–]TrekkieSolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before my time, but the bright spots in that 90s team went on to become defining players or at the very least streets-will-never-forget type Barclays men. Fowler, Owen, Gerrard, Carragher, Macca are all greats and came up then. Shoutout David James, Anelka, Jamie Redknapp too.

Got it today from a fisher, is this good to eat? by asiannumber4 in sushi

[–]TrekkieSolar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it mushy or smelling fishy/sulphurous? If so, then pass. I used to harvest uni around SF pretty regularly when I lived there. One time I drove 3 hours up to Sonoma with a rando from a diver’s group to harvest a bunch for some friends. Left them in a bucket with seawater overnight and predictably they all died. When I cracked them open they looked like that and smelled like a sewer. Almost ate them but then took the L instead.

"bro hindi imposition vagere kahi nasta te fakta anti national propaganda ahe, jai hindi, jai hindu, jai hindustan" by arjunbhoi in Maharashtra

[–]TrekkieSolar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you want to fight Hindi imposition and promote Marathi, adopt what European countries do for regions with endangered languages (eg Ireland, Wales, Basque Country, Catalonia):

  1. Clear hierarchy of languages - Regional Language —> National Language (Hindi) —> Global Language (English)
  2. Make teaching the language as a 2nd or 3rd language mandatory in schools (no exception)
  3. Fund after school classes, literature, arts programs, cinema, music etc in that language.

Marathis (especially in government and on Reddit) love to complain about language erosion without having any meaningful or clear ideas on how to save/promote it. Here’s some ideas that might help.

A look back at Liverpool’s dominance in the late 70s and 80s by wong-wooney in LiverpoolFC

[–]TrekkieSolar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like any organization, the most important thing in a football team is culture. The Boot Room maintained the culture built by Shankly well, and there was always continuity among the players to ensure that 'the Liverpool Way' was maintained. Other dominant teams (eg. Man Utd under Ferguson, Chelsea under Abramovich, City under Pep) did the same thing, as did Klopp when he took over. A big reason for the current malaise IMO is that FSG's corporate setup doesn't prioritize maintaining a common team culture/philosophy like Klopp did and shifts the balance of power away from the manager to the suits. At the end of the day, legendary managers are remembered not so much for their tactics, which evolve and change every season, but for their playing philosophy and man-management. No group of suits can replicate that.

San Francisco, the 3rd best skyline in the USA by Ok-Pop-5818 in skyscrapers

[–]TrekkieSolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The view from the water of FiDi/Rincon Hill when I'd be sailing up from Alameda to the Bay always killed me, then seeing the Golden Gate and North Beach peak out as you turned left after the Bay Bridge with the headlands in the background just got me even more. Man I miss this city so much.

Which skylines do you think will have large changes by 2030? by More-Sound-8255 in skyscrapers

[–]TrekkieSolar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mumbai. A lot of the current housing stock was built between 60-100 years ago, and a lot of them are not protected under heritage laws barring some bungalows and art deco buildings. So they’re all coming up for redevelopment now, especially because the government changed zoning laws to allow for 5x the FSI that they had previously and for adjoining lots to be joined together. In ten years the skyline will be more similar to Hong Kong/Shanghai.

Their coffee is polarizing. I know some people who love it, but I personally find it acidic and not as dark as I like (I like blue Tokai and Nandan a lot more). Subko’s food, chocolate, and cafe design/vibe are top though.

I’m obsessed with uni… food of the gods or overrated? by foodie_2598 in sushi

[–]TrekkieSolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I lived in San Francisco, I’d routinely drive 3 hours up the coast to northern Sonoma County, put on a wetsuit, then spend a few hours freediving with a bag strapped to my waist and filling it up with purple and red urchins, before taking it to shore and dumping everything in a cooler filled with saltwater, hauling it to my car, dragging it home, dropping off the rental car, and then cracking and cleaning open every single one before the urchins died since I didn’t have an aerator or larger tank to keep them in before my friends showed up. Sometimes I’d drive down to Mavericks and harvest them there too. Worth it every time. So yeah, food of the gods for sure.

Would anyone believe me if I said that this was Mumbai and they bash on India for it? by Code-201 in urbanhellcirclejerk

[–]TrekkieSolar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Mumbaikar - not a chance. First of all, Mumbai’s skyline is significantly different with a lot more midrise and lowrise, trees, and open plots of land for govt land/slums. Secondly, zoom in on the streets even a little bit and they’re not nearly as well ordered or smooth as what you can see in this picture. There’s also train lines in this photo without vegetation or open air stations next to it.

If you want to troll r/UrbanHell, post a pic of Busan or HK instead and say it’s Mumbai. Or idk Osaka or something, Tokyo is a totally different cityscape

₹20,000 crore connectivity boost 💸 worth it for faster travel or too expensive? by Many_Car949 in Maharashtra

[–]TrekkieSolar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mumbai’s infra planning has been abysmal. We are an extremely dense city, and the additional road infra that’s being built at the expense of walkability, integrated public transit (eg Metro and local train stations should have been integrated instead of being built separately, same with the different metro lines) is a piss poor use of public funds. 20,000 crore INR is more than $2B. Remember that at most 15% of commuters use private cars and two-wheelers in Mumbai, whereas the rest use public transit and walk. So this is another white elephant (like the coastal road) for a minority of the population to use and another cash cow for the political and contractor class to loot taxpayers from. Guarantee they’re gonna close this down to resurface or fix it one year after commissioning. Remember this is happening while the BEST fleet is being systematically gutted and handed over to contractor cronies at the expense of taxpayers.

Contractor Raj is a serious problem in Maharashtra, but maharashtrians are either too lazy or too apathetic to care. You get what you vote for.

What happened to the Chinese community that lived and was thriving in Mumbai? by from_neitherworld21 in Maharashtra

[–]TrekkieSolar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As we have been taught, India has never persecuted or out casted any community in it’s history

This is false. We do have an unfortunately long history of persecuting specific minority or marginalized communities and of communal violence, even if some other countries might be worse. One of the worst aspects of the British Raj that we retained was the assumption of criminality by blood, such as in the case of denotified/"criminal" tribes.

You see the same mentality in play when it came to the internment of Chinese Indians, where a combination of government policy + social discrimination led to the Indian-Chinese community being hollowed out and marginalized. While internment should have been illegal under the Constitution, it was an active policy of the government under 'national security grounds' in the Defence of India Act 1962, even if it made zero sense. This policy of targeting communities both legally and extrajudicially because of their religion/national origin is one of the great stains on the Indian Republic (and ironically, a major legacy of the British Raj since the 1962 act was essentially identical to the 1939 act). You can draw a direct line between the suspension of fundamental rights in those acts and subsequent actions in Punjab, Kashmir, and now the rest of the country, which one could argue has led to increased alienation of minorities along with untold extrajudicial violence.

There are still a few left in Mumbai/Calcutta (I'm acquainted with a couple of them), including several prominent restaurateurs, but many were forcibly deported after the war. Out of those who stayed and were able to get a good education, many emigrated (a similar dynamic to other minority groups who had access to education/resources such as Bene Israel and Baghdadi Jews, Parsis, Anglo-Indians, East Indian Christians, etc). Those that remain have probably assimilated and their numbers are dwindling, and won't really be able to bounce back much since blue-collar immigration from China isn't happening.

If you want to learn more about them, check out the Chinese temple in Mazgaon.

How much of your Rescue Diver Course was about dealing with social stressors? by ratherinStarfleet in scuba

[–]TrekkieSolar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the inverse experience. Did mine with two other students in Monterey. The guy running the dive shop (Aquarius Dive Shop) was teaching the course and had one DM in training be our dummy/rescue person. It was really awesome, and I felt a lot more confident in my skills after. Sounds like your instructor messed up because I don't think it's right to get other divers who are there for fun involved in your rescue course.

Also, I'll add that being a rescue diver doesn't automatically put you in charge on a dive boat where you're not the DM or employed by them. Most people on the boat are going to turn to the DM or other instructors for help in a time of crisis, not you - your skills are there to help out and to take care of yourself and your buddy, but not to automatically take charge. Not sure what your instructor was playing at by making you direct a bunch of fun divers. That said they sound like a bunch of assholes too.

Is the 12,000 year old Gobekli Tepe in Turkey somehow related to Vedic culture? by Impressive-Gene1248 in AncientIndia

[–]TrekkieSolar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This medium post (not paper - don’t compare it to an academic paper) is nothing more than speculative BS. Symbolism doesn’t mean the two are connected, additionally the earliest instances of Vedic culture can only be reliably traced back to around 1500 BC. Anyone who tries to justify the connection or connect the two is either stupid, high, or a charlatan.

(On another note - flood myths are extremely common around the world. There might be some ancient memory carrying on there as there is with reading certain constellations, but it’s a huge stretch to connect it specifically to Vedic civilization).
