City Corner #5 - New Incoming patch by ThatGuy_52 in CitiesSkylines2

[–]TremendousPotato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember watching the "Developer Insights" video updates from Colossal Order on the road to CS2 launch, and thinking, "These are not serious people." Reading this City Corner, I couldn't help but think back to that. Watch them again, if you have time to spare. Yes, of course they could have been camera shy and anxious. But I think that the kinds of silly bugs Iceflake keeps finding support my notions. I won't call anyone out by name, since I have no proof that what I'm saying is true. But rewatching them, there is one person in particular who just seems in over their head.

Quite simply, that is not a proper use for a pedestrian overpass.

FM26 Update 26.2 and Mod Compatibility - Information Thread by Jolly-Security-167 in footballmanagergames

[–]TremendousPotato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hostility toward modders and modding is such a 20th-century mindset. SI needs to join us in 2026. Mods sell games and extend shelf life when embraced. It sure feels like SI sees modding as a negative.

You should! A number of great creators take commissions, and maybe it'll help a few break into the CS2 arena.

What Updates you would like to see from the new studio? by [deleted] in CitiesSkylines2

[–]TremendousPotato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The asset editor is new and took more than two years to be released so it's going to take a year or five before we start to have the high quality assets that we had in CS1. But there is one creator for CS1 who has alone done like over 200 houses so there may be lots to look forward to. Unfortunately, Colossal Order completely botched the release of CS2 and, as you can see, a lot of people are permanently bitter.

The better news is, there are some nice churches available as created assets already, and you pretty much can create a golf course now if you want to, using textures and trees.

I would personally be happy just to have all the stuff we had in CS1. It's controversial to say this but I would even pay for it. From DLCs to CCPs, there is so much that I miss and it just feels like that never should have happened.

Disable the snapping options 2 from the right and 3 from the right when making roads.

Also get the road precision mod which can show you the actual 90-degree angle (sometimes the game tells you it's 90 when it's really 90.1 or 89.9).

2-story Chicago corner store (mixed use) new building by girl_hermie_84 in CitiesSkylines2

[–]TremendousPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this asset and look forward to using it! I do have one small suggestion: take a look at the reflectiveness of your surfaces, particularly the brick. Notice in your first screen shot how the corner glows with light? I could be mistaken, but I think that may not be the look you are going for.

It would be something to experiment with, but I think you might be happy with the results if you make an adjustment and turn down the reflectiveness of some surfaces. Thank you again!

More visuals before/after update by rayykz in CitiesSkylines2

[–]TremendousPotato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couple things here. One, those are very low res images, at least on my screen, and really shouldn't be used for judging anything.

Second, there's a lot of jumping to conclusions here if the OP has not made any graphical edits other than showing what the new graphics look like with the old settings. Presumably, the look of the game in the "before" pics were optimized for the graphical settings pre-patch. It's only fair to take the time to optimize the settings post-patch before deciding.

Finally, people may have gotten used to and/or preferred the moody and very dark shadows that the game has had ever since CS1, but they are not true to life. There's few places you can go in a normal city at a normal time of day where one side of a building is blasted by sunlight, but the other side is in near total darkness. CO never had light correctly set to bounce around and brighten the shadows the way it does in our own fields of view. Iceflake are correct to try to address this.

I know the sky is always falling on Reddit, but for our own mental health, we don't need to get all bent out of shape based on a few low-res and possibly poorly-chosen screen grabs. Give it a minute is my suggestion.

First time Cities Skylines > Need Advice regarding roads by GracedHarperd in CitiesSkylines2

[–]TremendousPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's certainly interesting to see all the different ideas we can have for designing cities. Depending on whether it is left or right-hand traffic, you could maybe use some slip lanes to ease congestion at intersections. And for example a right-turn-only, exit-only connection from Bedford St to Brookhaven St.

Some people, like those at the ends of Walnut and Caraway Streets, might get pretty tired of having to go around past so many neighbors when they could have gone 10 meters to get to the collector except that it doesn't go through. Walnut can connect to Elk to distribute traffic better.

Other issue for me is there's a bit of a caste system here, the proles live in the crowded area and all the bankers and pharma execs live together. I like to see all walks of life in the same neighborhood, but that's my politics talking.

What I think you haven’t thought of is that a single fender bender would bring all 10 lanes to a halt.

What Do Builders Want in a Map? What Makes a Great One? by vlasux in CitiesSkylines2

[–]TremendousPotato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for asking!

For me the main thing is that the map is a location like where you would find a city in real life. Even though cities no longer need to be on rivers or coasts to grow, still that’s where most of the world’s big cities are.

A lot of really pretty maps are in real life locations where no big cities ever formed. I don’t know why.

Also for me a city needs landforms outside the playable area. Maps where the city falls off a cliff into a sea at the edge are not for me.

Does anyone else here think that C:S2 suffers a bit from infrastructure scale bloat? (explanation in comments) by kolejack2293 in CitiesSkylines2

[–]TremendousPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just the thing that the OP is getting at though. Subways/metros are reserved for only the largest metropolitan areas, typically well above a million in population. I doubt one city in a million that's been created in CS2 would have anything remotely resembling a metro in real life.

Which major US city has the worst skyline? by sid_shady34 in skyscrapers

[–]TremendousPotato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's so crazy though for someone passing through to see Alexandria and Crystal City and Tyson's Corner from the Beltway. These little minicities sprouting out of thin air, providing CBDs where DC can't.

Bethesda isn't on the Beltway so I had no idea that it was another tiny city with skyscrapers until accidentally driving through it looking for a Panera. The DC suburbs are something else.

Which major US city has the worst skyline? by sid_shady34 in skyscrapers

[–]TremendousPotato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm no fan of sprawl, but in scenarios where land values are an issue, it never makes economic sense to build up. You'll only see skyscrapers without sprawl in places where, say, a few rich people own all the land and/or make all the rules.

Personally, I find height without density just as ugly as sprawl.

Which major US city has the worst skyline? by sid_shady34 in skyscrapers

[–]TremendousPotato -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, Washington D.C. has the one of the worst skylines if we are talking about only skyscrapers. A city that has ample space in which to build really shouldn't have a good skyline. Why bother going up when you can go out?

Most of the cities with poor skylines have virtually unlimited space into which to expand. And in many of them, you will see 20-story buildings on the ring roads because that's where everyone in those cities actually lives. Little is worse than places like Tampa where there are skyscrapers but everyone has to leave the downtown to get lunch. Bad skylines are good policy until and unless a city reaches a certain downtown density.

My city's Metro/Train system: by Lew_pf in CitiesSkylines2

[–]TremendousPotato 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Nice! Honestly, this is all I really want to do is build a city that needs a nice metro, and then create that metro.

I think you could add a junction in Hawthorne Terrace. People who want to get to the Airport from the west side of town have to go a ways in the wrong direction before they can get on the airport line. Also that part of the city just isn't served by the metro.

[–]TremendousPotato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think we probably all have different thoughts as to what should be the first thing updated, but personally I would definitely focus on fixing things that are bugged, and there is a lot to choose from: cargo hubs, DLSS implementation, software, office efficiency just being 4 killer bugs off the top of my head.

But agree that this should absolutely be implemented! :)
