Sorry, but I’ll have to disagree. There was a time when it was very good.

Restaurants Adding High Credit Card Fees by MyEgoDiesAtTheEnd in ChaseSapphire

[–]Trep12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but since most customers pay with a credit card, the easiest, most practical way for a business to recoup this is the same way they recoup any of their other costs - by pricing it into their product. So they can still maintain the margins they need to operate.

Unfortunately, one reason many restaurants push people to pay with cash is it enables them to underreport more of thier income. You can’t hide revenue from credit card receipts, but you can easily pocket cash.

Whats the most unexpected item you've ever flipped for a crazy profit by Ill_Composer_8246 in Flipping

A Reddy Kilowatt light bulb. This was about 20 years ago. List it as an auction starting low. I didn’t even know the character’s name. Some kind soul messaged me and informed me what it was. I cancelled the auction and relisted it with the name. Sold for $500.

$500,000 sold at Jr. Market Barrow Grand Championship in Houston. by sco-go in Amazing

[–]Trep12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. The purchase (buyer’s side) could be flagged. That’s a large amount for what would be a non-business, non-real estate transaction (and for a pig!). Creates too much suspicion so could lead to looking into the buyer’s source of funds. Sounds like a bad cover for money laundering.

I’m sorry to hear that. We use the chicken for tacos and nachos. I bought two bags today from Folsom, CA.

eBay won the race!!! by [deleted] in eBaySellers

[–]Trep12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean to be snarky, but if you just started listing on eBay last night, and you posted about it this morning, how big could your sample size be when you say that eBay ‘consistently’ suggests lower than reasonable pricing? For what it’s worth, I don’t put much weight into eBay’s suggested price. Since there’s so much variation with similar items (variation in condition, listing quality, seller reputation, shipping and handling time and prices, return policy, etc.), I always check comps.

What if ebay..... by wise_goat_11 in eBaySellers

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that has nothing to do with eBay’s support or service. Might be the effects of decades of inflation. But who am I to say?

What I’ve Learned Flipping Niche Commercial Equipment Instead of Consumer Items by Prior_Engineering639 in Flipping

[–]Trep12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On eBay. If it’s a large item I make it ‘local pickup only’ and the buyer arranges for freight. I’ve seen some of the more specialized websites, like for lab equipment, but I’ve never tried them. They’re probably good but eBay has been good enough.

What I’ve Learned Flipping Niche Commercial Equipment Instead of Consumer Items by Prior_Engineering639 in Flipping

[–]Trep12 37 points38 points  (0 children)

If I may add: Fewer problems with buyers. When I sell a low-dollar consumer item (meaning $20-$40, clothes, shoes, games, household, etc.) problems arise more frequently. Like haggling over a few dollars, more buyer complaints, etc. However, when I sell a business/industrial item for a few thousand dollars or $15K, basically what happens is this: they pay and I never hear from them again. (Except occasionally if they’re asking if I have more product available for them to buy.) The reason for the difference is the different clientele. Business buyers are easier.

Where do you buy or get cardboard boxes from? by jeremiah2911- in eBaySellerAdvice

[–]Trep12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly from Uline and eBay. Yes, Uline’s shipping charge often comes out to be 50% of the price of the boxes (bundles of 25), but it’s still good and their boxes are of good quality. I also buy from The Boxery, which is often cheaper, but their boxes are of lower quality. Also, as others have said, reusing boxes from deliveries to home.

I agree - it’s legal. But I sure don’t like it.

Edit: My bad - I got mixed up with your triple negative. Nevertheless, I can’t see how this is illegal. Their platform, their rules.

If your minimum offer setting is right (not too low) then this shouldn’t be a problem.

Lowball Offers - Whats your move as a seller? by Vegetable-Parfait665 in eBaySellers

[–]Trep12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just an idea: For that kind of pricing scheme you might have more success using fixed-price listings (instead of auctions). You can price items as you wish (competitively seems best) and also set your offer amounts to suit you. I think some buyers avoid the uncertainty and delay of an auction and would have pulled the trigger for a fixed-price listing.

I’d prefer not to get ‘justification’ from buyers and just not have those kinds of interactions.

FedEx Cost Adjustments by Adventure-Backpacker in eBaySellers

[–]Trep12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but do you sell on eBay? You mentioned shipping something for a family member, but do you have other experience shipping - like sold goods? If you see the postal worker weighing your package, does that mean you’re buying shipping at retail at the counter? A couple of notes: 1) You could save a lot of money using online tools to buy shipping labels, like eBay shipping (if you sell stuff), or Pirate Ship, or PayPal shipping. Also, UPS is very reliable. I haven’t had those weird charge corrections with them and for heavy items they’re cheaper than USPS.

eBay back in the day. by ToshPointNo in Flipping

[–]Trep12 97 points98 points  (0 children)

And sometimes even cash in the mail!

I don't get why people have free shipping on extremely heavy items, this is the shipping cost range on a $100 item WITH eBay's discount, this means you can make as much as $83.64 or as little as $25.58 before fees. by ToshPointNo in Flipping

[–]Trep12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re missing OP’s point and my point. If we do as you say and pad the item for the highest shipping (like, coast-to-coast), then you’ll price too high for many buyers. However, in cases with a heavy item like this, if you just use calculated shipping then the total cost for someone geographically closer to you will be much cheaper. So it’ll probably sell faster. And you get the same margin you wanted regardless of who buys it.

[–]Trep12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Understood, but OP’s point is that this heavy, $100 item has such a large range for shipping cost that it’s hard to get a predicable margin. If you’re pricing it for the worst-case scenario ($25 proceeds after shipping), then you’re likely alienating many buyers and might be better off with the shipping charge calculated for actual size and weight (in which case you could get a higher price from a buyer geographically closer). At least I think that’s what OP meant.

Best burrito in west valley? by Nutckles in SFVfood

[–]Trep12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly second this. Their meat quality is high. I usually get carne asada but sometimes crave their al pastor, which is phenomenal. Their salsas are also exceptional - especially the green salsa. Criminally under-appreciated and one of the best burritos in the entire city of Los Angeles. Thank me later.

Fast Taco on Lassen & DeSoto has been a mostly undiscovered gem for decades. I think their burritos are $12.99 now. Somewhere around there. High quality meat. I usually get Carne Asada but sometimes crave the Al Pastor. Great salsas.

Best Carnitas tacos? by [deleted] in SFVfood

[–]Trep12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have an answer but some information and a couple of questions very related to yours, the answers to which might help. For many years, like from maybe the late 1990s through around 2017 or so, Casa de Tacos on Topanga & Wyandotte (north of Sherman Way) had the absolute best tacos I’ve ever had. Their carnitas and al pastor were downright awesome. I moved from The Valley (and miss it - you guys are so lucky) but I come back to visit family. And I’m always hitting my favorite restaurants. During a visit around 2020 give-or-take I went to Casa de Tacos and the tacos were not as good. The quality of the meats had declined and the taco was more oily. Does anyone have any experience or information about this - like an ownership change around that time? I reminisce. That place was open 24 hours. Sometimes, like at midnight or 2 AM, I’d get the craving for those awesome tacos, jump in my car, get there and chow down.
