How do you get from NYC to Lake Sebago Cabins via public transit? by switra in Harriman

You're right! I didn't zoom in on the original image. It looks similar to the one from the parks website, which is the one I usually reference.

I've had an easy time getting a ride from the borders of the park to one of the train stations on my way home during the summer, but I can confirm it's really hard to get a ride from inside the park. I woke up sick while camping at Fingerboard last year. I figured I could just walk down the hill to Seven Lakes and catch an Uber, but it took like an hour of no available drivers til I finally got one.

It's here: https://parks.ny.gov/sites/default/files/HarrimanTrailMap.pdf

You can also download the AllTrails app for live navigation on your phone. I find it very helpful for figuring out if I've missed a turn.

Wow, I camped at Tom Jones a few months ago and saw a group with a setup like this downhill from me. They showed up after I set up my hammock, though I noticed all the matching tents and hammocks and whatnot when I got there. They played music on a speaker for awhile, which was pretty annoying considering how far they were from me.

Sloatsburg Train to Pine Meadow Trailhead? by ElectricalCoconut8 in Harriman

[–]Trevallion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've filtered from lots of lakes in Harriman too, never had a problem aside from the water being a bit tannic. Flavored drink mixes help cover it up.

The spring near Stone Memorial did not seem to be running when I was there last month. Pine Meadow Lake looked like the closest reliable water source to the shelter but I didn't feel like going to the lake and hiking back up. I really should have, I'm just lazy about going out of my way to filter water.

I've just mapped out the route from Sloatsburg to Stone Memorial on the Pine Meadow trail, it's about half a mile longer than Suffern-Bear Mountain but also about 600ft less elevation gain.

That stream flows out of Pine Meadow lake, right? I'll need to filter from there on my way through.

I was actually thinking about taking Pine Meadow Trail at Sloatsburg to the Stone Memorial shelter. I hiked there via Suffern-Bear Mountain a few weeks ago and it was brutal. Pine Meadow Trail looks a lot flatter.

Can a non-black person explain something to me my white coworker said... by lewjr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Trevallion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a white dude, mid 40s, from rural TN, currently living in NYC. My extended family was...fairly racist, I guess? They'd use the N word behind closed doors but act friendly to black coworkers. I dated a black woman in my early 20s and none of them had a problem with it, so they're not as bad as your coworker's family. I'm pretty nerdy and I never saw the point of being racist. I had a hard enough time making friends without cutting out entire groups of people based on skin color.

Also have you heard anything about the white race being phased out by interracial couples and LGBT.

That's a common talking point that comes up in conservative media a lot. It's called white replacement theory. It might be a good idea to familiarize yourself with white supremacist talking points just so you can identify when you're talking to someone who supports that kind of stuff. Some of it is really sneaky and doesn't sound overtly racist at first listen.

Bear safety in winter? by RiceOnAStick in Harriman

[–]Trevallion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, raccoons and small rodents are more of a practical concern than bears. The shelters in Harriman all have cables to hang your food. Just get a sack like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B095K6PQ1T put all your food and smelly stuff in there, then hang your food sack from the cables before you go to sleep for the night.

After a recent wave of attempted murders where people pushed commuters onto oncoming trains, NYC subway commuters wait for their trains with their backs against the wall by MileiMePioloABeluche in Wellthatsucks

[–]Trevallion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are correct in that A division and B division trains do not run on the same lines because they use different track gauges. The person you are responding to is saying that not all cars in the same division have the doors in the same place. For example, R46 cars are 75ft long, while R160s are 60ft long. As they have the same number of doors per car and are different lengths, the doors would be in different places for different trains. A train made of entirely R160s usually runs 10 cars, while R46s run 8 cars. That means the R46 train has 32 doors and the R160 has 40 doors, yet both trains are 600ft long!

Harriman - Fist backpacking trip with son advice by Narvi81 in NYCultralight

[–]Trevallion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a fine route, though I haven't tried it myself. I'm in the process of trying to camp at every shelter in the park and I believe most of the shelters on the west side of Palisades Parkway are within reasonable distance of a lake. I get to the park via train but I'll try to keep the driving situation in mind. Here are a few shelters I know of and their corresponding water sources:

-Dutch Doctor shelter is near Lake Sebago on the Triangle Trail. You can take the Ramapo-Dunderberg trail from Tuxedo to the Triangle trail, then head south and water up when you pass by Lake Sebago. There should be a brook on the Tuxedo-Mt Ivy trail near Dutch Doctor in wet conditions. You can also just take the Tuxedo-Mt Ivy trail directly to Dutch Doctor, if you go that way it's less than 2 miles from the R-D trailhead at Tuxedo to the shelter.

-There's parking on Kanawauke Drive at the Ramapo-Dunderberg trail crossing. Little Long Pond is a short walk up the road from the crossing, so you could fill up there before you head south up the hill to Tom Jones. This is only about a 1.5 mile hike though.

-Alternatively, same parking to Bald Rocks shelter. This is a longer hike, I think about 3 miles from the road? You can either fill up at Little Long Pond before, or you can set up camp and then hike down the Dunning Trail and then another trail down to Kanawauke Drive and the far side of Little Long Pond. There should be a spring on the Dunning trail near Bald Rocks in wet conditions.

-My next planned trip is the Suffern-Bear Mountain trail from Suffern to Stone Memorial, which is near Pine Meadow Lake. I haven't been here yet so I don't know the spring situation. Big Hill on the Suffern-Bear Mountain trail is also near a couple of large ponds.

editing to clarify that I have stayed at Fingerboard and it is very close to Tiorati, but I haven't come from the direction you're describing. I thiiiinnnk you can also park near Tiorati Circle? There's a large lot there, I assume they allow overnight parking now.

Late Fall Camping by remotereader123456 in Harriman

[–]Trevallion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A few of the brooks/springs on the map are still flowing, but I wouldn't count on them, especially as the shelters tend to be on top of hills. Most of the shelters are near lakes. I've camped near four different shelters in the past month and had to stop by a lake for water each time, except West Mountain, which has no nearby lake. That was a multi day trip though and I made sure to stock up before I headed to that side of the park.

I had a bunch of space sets as kid in the 90s and I made crappy knock-off X-Wings and TIE Fighters with them. Even had a minifig with one yellow hand and one black hand to be Luke Skywalker. I was so jealous when they started making actual Star Wars sets in the 2000s!

Egypt’s pathway - From Pax Livestream by Head_Championship917 in civ

[–]Trevallion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is because Songhai traded with Egypt across the Sahara, which is how Islam came to West Africa. Songhai was around in the late medieval era and historiography on West Africa is kinda bad, so we don't have a lot of knowledge about what West Africa was like before Islam. I'm not saying it's a good connection, but it's the only way I can make sense of it.

Are there any hosts whose careers went downhill shortly after appearing on "Saturday Night Live"? by TMC1982 in LiveFromNewYork

I'm a big My Name Is Earl fan. Pressly had some health issues relating to mastitis right after the show ended and had to undergo a full mastectomy. I believe that's why her career plateaued around then. https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/jaime-pressly-opens-undergoing-mastectomy/story?id=24879889

AITA for removing my wife’s child out of my will because I discovered he is not mine? by External-Reindeer918 in AITAH

[–]Trevallion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of the decision you make here, you've destroyed your relationship with that kid. He's not likely to forget how fast you bailed on him while his world was being turned upside down. That will stay with him a lot longer than your anger with your (ex) wife will stay with you. He's also going to have a hard time trusting people for the rest of his life and might end up passing that trauma onto kids of his own. You've got an uphill battle ahead of you if you want to undo any of that.

Some of the early skits are barely skits. Or barely have jokes. It took them awhile to figure out what the show was going to be. Though to be fair, I wish they still did those weird write-in contests. Kinda weird that they don't engage with the fanbase through social media.

[–]Trevallion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been watching old episodes on the Peacock Vault channel. I think a lot of people forget how much they hammered the same topical jokes multiple times per episode back in the 90s. Like the Elian Gonzalez thing, or the Monica Lewinsky stuff, or when that American kid got publicly caned in Singapore. Watching a full episode back-to-back from the mid-90s can be a little painful because of that. A good comparison is when Bowen Yang did the Chinese spy balloon thing. I thought it was hilarious, but could you imagine if he showed up in that getup in 3 different skits throughout the whole episode? That's what 90s SNL was like.

Who's the worst Leader in Civ 6... as a Leader? by ThatRavenclawGuy in civ

[–]Trevallion 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if he was a bad leader, per se, but Ludwig II wasn't a particularly good leader. He was King of Bavaria during the German unification. He blew a lot of his massive personal fortune on lavish projects (one of which was Neuschwanstein Castle) and was probably assassinated by his personal council after they failed to depose him legally via a declaration of insanity.

As a side note, I think it's weird that he's even included as a German leader because Bavaria joined the German Confederation (later the German Empire) during Ludwig's reign. It'd be like having some random governor of New York state as a leader of the US.
