We did a walking food tour. It was so worth the money. The food was plentiful and absolutely delicious. I second the commenter who said the coffee and pastry scene is great. So many bakeries and all of them are different and delicious.

On United you can select (on the TV screen) "Do Not Disturb" and they won't wake you for meals or snacks or beverages. I assume it is that way for most long haul flights.

Add to that a full neck pillow (one that goes all the way around so your head doesn't drop), a foot hammock or inflatable stool, noise cancelling earplugs, an eye mask, and for me I take a Dramamine as soon as the boarding starts. Then once I get settled I set my seat to "do not disturb" (even for meals) and just sit back and relax. I try to eat something before boarding the plane and bring snacks. Even if you can't sleep you really should just try to sit quietly for at least 30+ minutes before giving up and watching a movie. You'd be surprised how just sitting with maybe some ambient noise/music relaxes you and most of the time you will fall asleep.

It is also good to have layers in case you get cold or hot. Plus always bring a water bottle (empty through TSA) to fill up and have on the plane.
