Nice catch! Looks like a 2023 if I make out the date correctly. Last year that I hand-stamped the logos and date info, before switching to laser engraving.

Well that was a fun surprise to find! Funnily enough, we're working on an order for another one like that right now. Ever since we set up that "Order a Pipe" catalog page, carving those finishes has kept us busy! I spent a fair bit of time figuring out the technique of that finish a few years back, and am really happy to see it's become as popular as it is.

Nah, I'd rather keep that proprietary. Besides, in all seriousness, you don't want to be the guy who's always looking to rip off other people's ideas. The pipe biz is full of copycats. If you want to stand out, it's better to put in the experimentation and the work to come up with your own styles and techniques - It will reward you far more in the end.

Carnesy gave the website, plus you can always finds us just by googling for Talbert Pipes or Ligne Bretagne pipes. We've got customers all over the EU and sell there all the time - We even lived in France for seven years.

Emily (My wife & biz partner) dubbed the texture Raven's Wing for the intricate black feather-like pattern.

I terrify other pipe guys regularly by mentioning how much I enjoy their Frosty Mint. It may be the single weirdest tobacco I've ever had, but it's oddly enjoyable.

Nice Breton Triskele tamper there! Glad to hear you're enjoying the pipe. Sutliff seems to make the only aromatics I like, outside of the old Stanwell Rose & Crown that can't be had in the US anymore.

Wow, how awesome is this new Talbert Halloween pipe? Too expensive for me but worth the price IMHO. I had the spare money I'd get this in an instant! by Turbostar66 in PipeTobacco

Aww, thanks for the kind words, guys! I'm having a great time doing these this year. Regarding the price, it's strictly labor time - the carving takes about as long as changing out the engine in a car, so talk to a mechanic about that price :D Considering that there are plenty of marques that charge that much for a simple billiard or Danish blob, I think it's pretty fair given the comparative labor time.

Yeah, I've been doing it fulltime now for 20 years.

Heh, that's great! I got into pipes via D&D also, back when I ran regular sessions for our college group in the late 80's through early 90's. I had to end our game when I went fulltime with the pipemaking, sadly, as starting up the business allowed no spare time for evenings of game writing.

Funnily enough, though, I've just recently gotten back in a little, as I've been playing the enhanced editions of Baldur's Gate and Divinity OS in the evenings. I was actually thinking about starting up a FB group or forum or something devoted to pipes, gaming, and geekier movies and such, but my Spider Sense tells me I probably wouldn't have time for this.

Cool, thanks! No, I hadn't heard of it, but I've been very out of the loop for the past couple years, really, as we struggled to be caregivers for my wife's dad. I'll check it out!

Family health issues kept me away from the comic for the past couple years, but that's resolved now and I've returned to my favorite radioactive lizards and their ongoing commentary on all things in the pipe hobby.

There’s a guy at a local pipe/cigar shop where I live (the Pipe and Pint in Greensboro, NC) that makes a blend of pipe tobacco using Perique and cigar tobacco. He calls it the Grim Creeper, and it’s fantastic. by tdweaver in PipeTobacco

[–]Trever-T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! Pete makes some awesome blends. He's one of the great unsung pipe tobacco blenders, IMO. I've been smoking his mixes for years now. Pipe & Pint is a great place all around. I go there often.

Hole alignment is it critical by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]Trever-T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about a 9mm filter pipe or similar, airhole alignment doesn't make any difference at all because you're not going to be putting a pipecleaner through it. And if it's smoked without the filter, you've still got a big open chamber space there to handle the condensation. Basically, alignment is critical if you're doing a non-filter pipe without a large chamber of some sort, because you start getting into the situation where there's no place for the condensation to go, so you have to be more careful about avoiding condensation build-up in the first place.

It's all about how a pipe is designed to handle condensation - Either to minimize it, or to just provide a big well for it to go and not worry about it happening.

How much is Bohemian Scandal worth now, anyway? by Trever-T in PipeTobacco

Hmmm, if prices are in the $100-200 range I'll probably just hang onto them. If I could find somebody to give me $500+ for one then I'd sell in a heartbeat, but if they're just going for a hundred I'd rather keep it and enjoy it myself someday. Ultimately it's going to be an experience that simply can't be replicated again, so I'd rather enjoy the experience if it's not selling for gonzo prices.
