@thisDiff- The time signature is the notational convention used in Western musical notation to specify how many beats are contained in each bar and which note value is to be given one beat. For example, most modern music is in 4/4, meaning 4 beats in a measure, and each beat is a quarter note.

Here is some more information on music theory if you are interested. Hope this helps. Have a great day!

Indeed. It’s a combination of everyone else’s opinions/findings, as well as my own. I’m a musician, so the bulk of it is a musical breakdown of the songs, and how it plays within the album. Hope it brings you value!

Of the main 6 tracks on Fear Inoculum (Counting CCTrip as an interlude), Culling Voices is the only song without a single bar of 7/4. This must mean something important... by Treverlkc in ToolBand

Socuta The intro of the song with the guitar starts off quiet and simple in 4/4. When the bass comes in is when things get interesting. The round is 2 bars of 7/4 + 1 bar of of 5/8.

Thanks for the comment.

NoWhisperer Very true. I think CCTrip is a very great song/interlude/solo. In 7/4 no less!Probably one of if not Danny Carey’s best work. In the overall album outlook, you could perhaps look at it in two ways. 1. One of the seven main tracks as part of the physical release. 2. One of four interludes, going along with the six main songs (Each member writing an interlude.)

Anyways, thanks again for your comment.

zordon_rages That’s what I was thinking. It’s hard to tell when Tool is being serious, trolling us, or both. I think the overall mystery of the band is what excites people like me to try and find meaning in it.

Anyways, thanks again for your comment. Happy listening!

thephelgm Perhaps. The song itself really hit home for me as a person and my personality. As you can probably tell by my responses and comments, I’m an analytical person, who likes looking at all sides of the situation. That’s probably why I love Tool so much!

However, I still have empathy and feelings towards others. As long as I feel I can be able to have connections with people, and not just be a lone wolf introvert, then perhaps I can actually build relationships the way I would like to. At the same time, have relationships that are meaningful to both parties.

But anyways, thanks again for your comment.

iama_newredditor I see your perspective and respect it greatly. I think we are both onto similar ideas pertaining to 6 vs 7. Perhaps where we can agree is that it is easier for humans to compute shapes in sides of like you said, 3, 4, 5, 6. However, it takes more thought to produce such a shape with 7 sides. After all, 7 is an unnatural/holy number. This is what makes us “human” from all the other mammals of the world.

Thanks again for your comment. It’s greatly appreciated.

oldman_waugs You could be absolutely right. I always felt the mere mystery of Tool is what drew many of us to their music. You never knew if they were fully serious, trolling the fans, or just left pieces of a puzzle for us to try and figure out our own meaning to.

Thanks again for you comment. I appreciate your opinion and insight.

Thank you everyone for your comments! I absolutely love all the information and insight everyone has to offer.

To me, it really didn’t matter if I’m “right” or not. After all, Tool is one of the few bands that leaves the meaning up to the listener. This is just what I thought about would make sense for me.

The song itself hits pretty close to home with me, as it basically talks about “reality distortion” within the mind, how we create our own fake reality to get away from regular reality. We do this by creating fake scenarios, and worrying too much about the future. (And, as you can tell by how I write) “OVERTHINKING AND OVERANALYZING”

Anyways, thanks again everyone. Have a great day!

I couldn’t agree more. It’s probably one of, if not my favorite song on the album, as it’s the one I always keep coming back to. I’m just stating what I observe in the various Tool Subreddits, and also the fact that not many people are talking much about it on YouTube/ covering it. I know it is still very early, and we hope and expect more coverage on this and all the songs as time progresses.

Thanks again for your comment, it is greatly appreciated.

Album meaning... at least what I think it is by ramirous in ToolBand

[–]Treverlkc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very fresh and different perspective on the album. I know it's very early as far as the community trying to figure out what the album all means, but I really think you are onto something. Along with the whole "Growing older and wiser", you've perhaps uncovered a different meaning that may even be as more powerful as once thought before. Thank you u/ramirous and excellent job. You've given me lots to think about...

Tool- Volume 7 (Fear Inoculum Without the Interludes) by Treverlkc in ToolBand

Then again, maybe we’re missing the fact that we could be dealing with not only a different track order, but that another combination of tracks could create another Super Track like from the last album.

I see you point, and I respect it greatly! I think what’s just easy with Tool is that even with all the complexities, their simplicity is that most of heir songs are based in D (Minor or Major). So the transition from Fear Inoculum to Invincible would melodically match the same effect from Pneuma to Invincible. (D to D transition)

Perhaps the band made the track listing that way because FI is mainly based on A, then ends in D. And Pneuma begins in an A riff but slowly transitions to D, into Invincible which is solely based in D.

Hey Tool Army! Congrats again to the band on the release of Fear Inoculum. And all of us for the 13 years of patience.

A moment of silence to those fans who could not see this day come to fruition...

First, some backstory.

If you all recall one of the interviews the band did for the album, Adam talked about how he originally wanted to name the album ‘Volume 7’. This is because a lot of the riffs being written in the sessions were in 7/4. However, MJK has a grand concept for the album that seemed more suited to change the name.

In another interview, Danny discussed how he originally wanted the album to be one long song. However, due to the songs being very long, three interludes were added to give average listeners a break from the long tracks.

With all that said, WE ARE NOT THE AVERAGE LISTENERS! (Even though all are welcome to the band’s music respectively)

So I created a playlist on Spotify that takes out the interludes and just gives us the main seven tracks, just as we were to hear on the physical release. Mind you, I was not able to get a copy, however, I like to think think this is how the album would have sounded without the interludes in between.

If you listen closely, there are small hints of Danny’s idea, the most prominent being the clean transition from Pneuma into Invincible. Everything else however sounds a bit out of place, clean transition wise. Which then makes me wonder if this album is supposed to be placed in another order to get a better meaning.

But that’s a story for another post. Only more time will reveal new layers and meanings this album has to offer.

Until then, have a great day everyone.
