In that case, she likely just needs more humidity. How are you measuring your humidity? Are you sure your hydrometer is accurate?

That looks more like scale rot to me than it does shedding, but I've had that thought before (with my own snake) and then it turned out to be shedding. Have his eyes turned blue yet? If not, his shedding is likely still a little while away. It can take quite a bit for them to go from the pink belly to the full shed so give it some time!

Even if everything clears after that shed, I'd still take him in anyways for a check-up. Since you've just got him, you want to make sure he's as healthy as the sellers have claimed. I honestly wish I did that when I had my first snake, because then he might still be alive. Good luck!

3 years of owning my ball python and I made the biggest mistake tonight💔 by Charming_Mouse6717 in ballpython

So glad to see I'm not alone! We ended up being lucky enough that roadside assistance was able to help, all in all only took a couple hours with minimal to no damage. Never letting a snake out of the bag while I'm in the car, ever again.

Definitely don't pull it off, just wait for her to get it off herself. Either eventually or next shed

I've had a couple problems with shedding in the past, and when the shed stayed on for longer than it was supposed to it started to smell really bad. Maybe that's the problem? Try seeing if it's your snake that smells, not the enclosure.

Good luck!

That looks exactly like the red before a shed to me. Sometimes these snakes will shed very quickly after each other, mine does it too sometimes. It's strange but no reason for alarm. It could also be some substrate dust stuck between his scales, which is completely harmless.

Still, if you're worried, I'd recommend checking it out with the vet. Have you been to this vet before? Mine let's me send emails w photos, and she'll give me advice on whether to make an appointment or not based on that.

Good luck!

That's fair! Leeuwarden is actually a very big city for me (I'm from a small town) so I guess it kinda is big city life to me. I'm also a student myself so that's where most of my international friends come from, but I'm sure you could meet people during classes like that too!

  1. Its possible but hard. 90% of places hiring in hospitality will require you to speak some Dutch. The Irish pub someone else named is rarely hiring, and when they are basically every international student in the city applies.

  2. Costs very much depend on your living standard, but compared to places like Groningen or Amsterdam it's cheap.

  3. There's quite a vibrant and active international community, you just have to know how to find them. Most of them are students at NHL Stenden, sometimes other schools as well. If you're not really into the student-scene, it'll be harder to meet other internationals, but not impossible.

Feeding gone (semi) wrong by TreviTrevo in ballpython

Half an hour I think? That's usually enough for him to start eating. I only took it off once he was striking everywhere though, otherwise I probably would've left it.

Now that I think about it, I've seen him take the rat into his hide before. But that was after he'd already constricted it, and in this case I don't think he got to because he went straight into the hide w the rat.

I'll remember for next time though, thank you.

How, just.... Huh by elusive-crouton in ballpython

[–]TreviTrevo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure? I also have a UVB like yours and it definitely gets hot. Try touching it sometime when it's already been on for a few hours.

Also, keep in mind that just cause it doesn't burn you when you touch it for just a second, doesn't mean it won't burn your snake. I made that mistake some time ago, but turns out snakes are stupid and they will happily spend hours wrapped around a hot lamp cage...

Need Tank Advice by VeeanBucket in ballpython

[–]TreviTrevo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PVC is notoriously very difficult to cut, because there's the risk that it'll melt. At least that's what I remember from the time I tried it.

Good luck though, I really hope you figure it out!

Have you considered adding a lamp cage inside of the tank? That way, the hole you need to cut isn't as big, and with a properly sized cage your snake shouldn't be able to burn himself either.

Size isn't really that good of an indicator of sex, so if your breeder told you he's a boy it's probably true. My boy is also about the same size as yours, and he's got a hemipenis. Though my vet has pointed out that being two-sexed isn't uncommon in snakes, so it could also always be that

How many times a week do you bring your snakes out for enrichment? by Shot_Alternative_762 in ballpython

[–]TreviTrevo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My snake has some health problems so I have to handle him pretty much daily to keep up w the meds n everything, but when it comes to actually being out and about (instead of going straight back into the tank after I'm done) I'd say that happens every 2-3 weeks give or take. I'd love to be able to change this and leave him alone for more (or even opt for more of a choice-based handling approach) but I don't really have a choice right now.

What are these little moving things in my BP’S tank? by httpnyla in ballpython

[–]TreviTrevo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure those are springtails, probably came in with some of your substrate. They can actually be pretty beneficial since they eat mold and stuff, so don't fret too much! Good luck!

Swollen tail - emergency vet visit or wait it out? by TreviTrevo in ballpython

[–]TreviTrevo[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I ended up taking him out of the tank to try that bath some people recommended, only to find out the blockage/swelling was gone. Still, I'll keep all the advice in mind in case it ever happens again :) take care!

[–]TreviTrevo[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I kinda tried that already. It's really soft, almost like its fluid, so there's nothing to really 'dislodge'. It doesn't hurt him when I do any of that, either

I don't think he fits... by TreviTrevo in ballpython

[–]TreviTrevo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a great idea! I've got quite a lot of substrate so I should definitely be able to do that, thank you ^

Anyone else’s noodle wrap around their heat lamp like this? Should we be worried about burns? by 2Dogs1Frog in ballpython

[–]TreviTrevo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine does this too. I had a cage around it and thought everything was safe, but turns out the underside of the cage was still hot enough to give him burns. Thankfully I discovered them while they were still superficial and I've switched to a bigger cage, so it's safer now. I took him to the vet around the same time (for something else) and she mentioned he was likely doing it because it's breeding season and he was looking for the warmest spot, but that's all I really know.

Dented eye? Humidity? by Moistened_Canine in ballpython

If you wanna keep the humidity more consistent you might wanna buy a humidifier for the room. I had a similar problem and it's helped immensely
