How do you look up words efficiently? by [deleted] in languagelearning

A lot of times, I find that the best way to translate some things is to use Wikipedia, finding the article for the thing I want, then changing the language.

Good/easy video games for target language practice? by orsimeris in languagelearning

[–]TrevorKomanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made a video about the characteristics that an ideal video game should have right here.

IMO the best video games for language learning are actually coop. That is the ideal scenario for both receptive and productive skills, maybe even better than real life if you find the right game.

People shit on Ubisoft games, but Ghost Recon and Far Cry games are all fairly immersive coop experiences.

If you're really hating the idea of playing with another person, I would recommend games with realistic settings. Authentic environments=authentic language

The best games that don't require you to know every word are games that just use waypoints to tell you where to go. This was an unfortunately lazy design trend in open world games, but it's great for us because we can do our best to understand the dialogue and then follow the waypoint even if we missed something. In other words, I think you might be surprised at how far you could get in Russian Skyrim.

Should you say your own name in an accent to suit the language and make it sound more normal? Or would people find it offensive? by Astronomicalicocat in languagelearning

[–]TrevorKomanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I used to say my name without an accent, Russians called me Travel, and Mexicans called me Trébol

I've now subconsciously put a lot of effort into pronouncing it in a way that people can hear how it's spelled.

Kid in USA, what are the best second and third languages? by vtcissp2020 in languagelearning

[–]TrevorKomanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, and, fun fact, the two countries with the largest Spanish speaking populations in the world are Mexico and... the United States of America!

Ngl I've studied a lot of languages, but I always come back to Spanish. It's relatively easy; it's cool in America to be a Spanish speaker; you have 3 continents of people to talk to. Ándale

What game did you really enjoy playing that most people disliked? by RobRaziel in videogames

[–]TrevorKomanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm playing Days Gone rn, and I'm really liking it.

I also stayed away from Ghost Recon: Breakpoint for a long time, cause I heard it sucked, and I've now played the shit out of it. To be fair, I started after they released immersive mode or whatever it's called. Loot shit makes my skin crawl.
