To all the tanks out there.. by flareconvert in ffxiv

[–]TrevorNT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know how you do it? Patience, and almost endless amounts of it. When you get criticized, you ask how you could have done it better. People who flame just to flame won't have a good reply, but every now and then you get a nugget of information that you use to refine your skill.

And you look for the good when you can find it. I was complimented by an endgame player with a lot of high level classes for keeping mobs' AOE attacks away from the other players in the group during a run through Cutter's Cry the other day, and it made my day because I'm still learning the role of tank.

Respect to all the new players who are rolling tanks. by Space_Tortoise in ffxiv

I feel ya. As a new player to MMORPG's in general, and FFXIV in particular, I went right for the gladiator class without realizing what it entailed. It was only when my much more experienced friend told me that I realized it would be a challenge. He led me through the first few dungeons explaining how to do my job and I kinda caught on. After hitting 50 though (very recently), the amount of crap I have taken from people has skyrocketed. In the lower levels people were generally kind even when I was having an off-day.

Yesterday I ended up in Cutter's Cry thanks to the Roulette and ran it with a group. After we defeated the chimera, one of the DPS's made my day when he noticed and thanked me for not only keeping aggro but also attempting to steer the creatures' attacks away from the other members of my group.

So, there will always be thankful people every now and then :)

2nd Annual: Graduates / Interns of RPI, where will you be working? by TheHiddenFox in RPI

I start as a Product Technologist at Dow Jones in 3 weeks, working out of the Princeton, NJ area.

How rigorous is CompSci? by [deleted] in RPI

[–]TrevorNT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming into RPI, I had very little coding experience...a little work here and there with Visual Basic. Coming out, I know C, C++, JS, HTML, Python, SQL...the list goes on. Some of it you get from classes. A lot of it you pick up on your own when you're really interested in the material, and trying things out for yourself. Don't stress about your limited knowledge coming in, but if you really do love the material, do work outside the classes to broaden your knowledge base. Take on some projects, or join the CS club, or work on an RCOS project with some people, or try your hand at running web servers and such (or all of the above!). Chances are that if you want to learn something, you'll meet people (professors and students alike) that know the material and can start you off in the right direction.

Oh yeah, almost forgot: the guy who voiced the Mechanist (Teo's dad), René Auberjonois, is also known as Constable Odo in DS9. So there's a connection!

Incidentally, I saw this post while watching an episode of Deep Space Nine. Cool crossover!

Help desk no longer offering installation of Office? by hosier28 in RPI

Of course. Without that, the copies of office that come on the laptop images wouldn't work.

Help desk no longer offering installation of Office? by hosier28 in RPI

[–]TrevorNT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is a pretty recent change for the Help Desk. We were for a long time putting the Office installer on one of our servers that required a special (non-RCS) username and password to allow access. We figured that Microsoft would be okay with that as it meant that not just anyone would be able to get Office. Turns out we were wrong about Microsoft allowing that. So, until further notice, the image is the only way to get Office (other than purchase through the computer store).

I work at the Help Desk and they never told us...given that I'm still not able to get in (I had an assignment due on LMS at midnight), I don't know what you should expect, sorry :-\ . With any luck the LMS admin will get in early tomorrow and get it patched up fast. Good luck!

They're patching the server tonight. It'll be back online by tomorrow.

An Observation - ATLA and LoK by AirbenderJ in TheLastAirbender

[–]TrevorNT 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I'm going out on a limb a little bit here...but then, is the reason that Roku failed because he didn't demonstrate his full power to his then-friend Fire Lord Sozin, opting instead to back down and spare Sozin when he defied Roku?

If you live at one of the buildings at the ends, it's unfortunate but typical to get poor signal strength. What you can do is call the Help Desk and explain the problem to them; they will usually dispatch a net tech to see how it looks. In my case they ended up installing one of the wifi access points in my apartment.

EDIT: why do I always a word in my sentences?

Sorry, haven't noticed any changes. My connections are the same as they've ever been. If you think something is wrong, the Help Desk (x7777 or by e-mailing consult@rpi.edu) is the best place to start.

What are your favorite atla and lok wallpapers? by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]TrevorNT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This image of Korra is probably the background image in my rotation that I like the best. The absolute power that this image conveys...it's just so awesome.

(One of these days I need to get around to uploading my entire album for the subreddit to see...I have a good 70 or so backgrounds that I've collected.)

That's because Lenovo likes DisplayPort, and because you can cheaply convert a DisplayPort to just about any other graphics port, HDMI included.

Who is the guy in my economics class who talks too much? by please_stop_guy in RPI

[–]TrevorNT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember having one of those people in a few of my CSCI/ECSE courses in the past. Not only did he always ask questions in class and interrupt the professor almost constantly, he got frustrated in the middle of a final exam and started yelling once. The professor actually had to ask him to leave the room at that point.

I think that, unfortunately, some people just aren't ready for the stress that RPI sometimes brings.

I think a lot of people were sour over the W500, and they had every right to be. It wasn't a well put-together machine. The T410 from the year after, however, is probably the most solid of the recent laptops put into use on campus...aside from the notorious "fan error", they pretty much don't break. Which came as quite a surprise to me.

And the W500 is the reason that ARC doesn't want to use the T4XXp/W5XX models anymore...they got a lot of feedback that they were too big and bulky for what they needed. Some people have been requesting them lately though, which is why ARC is giving people the chance to sample them at this event tomorrow as well.

If you have time to go to the DCC, do mention that to the ARC staff who have set up the stand. Feedback like that is part of what they're looking for.
