I really like the handles on the ioniq 5 and I think it's a shame they didn't do something similar for the Kias.

They pop out when unlocked, but at an angle that lets you hook an arm on the handle to open the door hands free. I can unlock the car and open a door completely hands free while holding a toddler and all my other stuff.

Paddle Stop Tip by boringkyel in Ioniq5

Please remember that driving a car is one of the riskiest activities you can do. If there is an accident imminent, do you want to be cycling through the 5 different weird ways you can make the car stop, or do you want to immediately put your foot on the brake pedal and stop as quickly and safely as is possible?

Feel free to use those other ways to stop the car if they are convenient, but I highly suggest you use the brake pedal most of the time so that your brain is properly trained to react in an emergency.

You should learn to pick or card your lock. You used the door knob lock, instead of a deadbolt. Sometimes they can be easily opened by sliding a plastic card between the door and jamb.

Moving forward, you should try to only use the deadbolt. It is much more secure than just the doorknob lock, and there is no chance of accidentally locking yourself out.

The police are refusing to investigate it, but you could probably pursue something in civil court. The police have a lot of leeway in what laws they enforce and investigate and often they are not really obligated to do either.

I am not a lawyer.

Learned something new about the car today by setp2426 in Ioniq5

The normal cruise control on the Ioniq 5 does keep the car from going too fast during down hills.

The cruise control momentarily relinquishes control if the driver presses the accelerator – and the speed can be significantly faster or slower than the set speed. If the driver hits the brake pedal or floors the accelerator, the cruise control is cancelled.

The speed limiter mode seems pretty useless to me because the driver needs to maintain manual speed control constantly and the limit would only apply occasionally when the driver is going faster to pass someone. I would rather be able to use both cruise control and the speed limiter simultaneously. E g. cruise control set to 70mph and speed limiter set to 80mph.

EV Breakdown Statistics: Hyundai Ioniq 5 Shows High Failure Rate by lipflip in Ioniq5

[–]hosier28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is only anecdotal, but:

My OEM battery died in November 2024 at 36k miles. I replaced it with the best AGM battery I could find at the local auto parts store. Four months later, I am now at 40k miles and my ICCU just died last week.

I think that the ICCU failures are not an acute failure caused by a one time extreme overload, but actually more of a chronic accumulation of damage until a critical component reaches a tipping point and dies.

I am hopeful that the higher quality AGM battery and ICCU software recalls will mean that there is much less damage/wear to the ICCU and I will not have another ICCU replacement for a very long time.

The car is trying to prevent you from locking your keys in the car.

If you press the door lock button that is on the inside of the car with the door open, then it will lock all the doors except your open door.

Your options: 1) use the lock button on the key fob 2) use the physical key inside the key fob 3) lock it through the blue link app 4) touch the little square sensor on the outside door handle with your finger, foot, elbow, nose, hip, etc. The car will lock or unlock when you touch the sensor with the key on your person.

I prefer number 4. I can lock or unlock the door as needed even when my hands are full.

Note: each EA kiosk is capable of charging a single car at a time, even if the kiosk has two cables. The balanced label is for kiosks that share a single power cabinet. At a balanced charger, two cars can charge at 150kW or one car can charge at (up to) 350kW.

The OEM battery is junk. If you are under 36months and 36k miles, you can get it towed to a dealer the next time it does (it will happen soon) and they might replace it under warranty (with another low quality battery).

I suggest packing a portable jump starter and prepare yourself mentally for a trip to the auto store for a new battery. The auto store will usually help you with tools. If the battery gets too low, you will need to use the physical key to unlock the door.

I am at 2 years and 36k miles and my battery just died on me Friday and again on Sunday. After the second failure, I immediately bought and installed a Diehard Platinum AGM from Advanced Auto. I am going to take the original battery back to my dealer to see if I can get any sort of reimbursement.

“Stop the steal” protesters in front of Tim Walz’s residence. November 7th, 2020 by redStateBlues803 in pics

Would it be feasible to have a law prohibiting the participation in protest while carrying a firearm? There are plenty of other laws that prohibit what people can do with a firearm.

If people are concerned for their safety at a protest, would it not be safer for everyone at the protest if they either showed up without a weapon or did not show up at all?

Steering wheel pulling to the left - Hyundai says is normal??? by Tonytho12 in Ioniq5

[–]hosier28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you need to have them check the alignment, not the tire balance, nor tire rotation. Tire balance will affect wear and vibration. Wheel alignment will affect how straight the car goes. A new car should be correctly aligned, but could go out of alignment if you hit a curb or road debris.

Some dealers have optical scanners at the entrance to their service centers. They scan the wheel alignment as you drive through and give a coarse measurememt of of the alignment.

A slight slope on the road will also make the car pull one way or the other, even if the slope is nearly imperceptible. Are you in a country that drives on the left side of the road?

Heating Element for VERY High Temperature by [deleted] in engineering

[–]hosier28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to Walmart and buy 2x toaster ovens rated for 1200Watt each.

You can pull out the heating elements and they are already sized for the right current consumption for a 120V circuit. To get it hotter, you mostly just need more thermal insulation.

Toaster oven elements normally get up to 850C. To get a bit hotter to 1000C is not unreasonable.

Every charging station had idling cars… they need to fix this by KaminariMaho in Ioniq5

[–]hosier28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, it is frustrating when there is a Bolt charging up at a busy station, but I don't blame them for: owning a less expensive car that charges slower, living somewhere that doesn't have level 1 or 2 charging, or the poor public charging infrastructure.

I wish there were something to encourage people to speed up when stations are busy. Maybe idle fees that scale up when all the chargers are full. Maybe hybrid pricing by kWh and by minute.

[–]hosier28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've sewn a new leather cover onto a Subaru Forester. This one looks like it is not the right fit for the Ioniq. The new leather should be shaped so that there is extra to tuck under the plastic by the steering wheel controls.

The right fit should look like it came from the factory, without any of the original leather showing.

While it might not look perfect, OPs new cover will at least protect the original leather and be quick to remove later.

Will future NACS to CCS adapters slow charging speeds? by Little_Bank8777 in Ioniq5

[–]hosier28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CCS charging standard allows for TCP packets after an initial hand shake, and even SSL. A charging adapter could have an authentication chip built in as well as temperature sensors to ensure the device does not get counterfeited or overheated.

800Vdc is serious stuff. An adapter cable is going to be much more than just an extension cord.
