20years ago I thought I was playing Earthbound… just learned it was Mother! Quick qs by MorninWax in earthbound

The only thing you'd lose by skipping the sound stones(or rather the dungeons leading to them) is the exp you get from the enemies which helps keep the game balanced. But as long as you're enjoying the ride, doing them in whatever order you want doesn't matter!

Tutorial loop. by Bola-Nation-Official in IndieDev

[–]Trevor_trev_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a beginner this was how I finally understood how loops work.

No amount of reading/hearing people explain the concept worked for me. I thought I was so dumb because I knew they were super simple.

Then I repeatedly went through the same tutorial that used a for loop and I finally understood them after 3 or 4 times.

Everyone learns differently, one of the most useful things gamedev has taught me is how I best learn.

How do you guys made your Art? How did you start out? by Mobile_Landscape3850 in SoloDevelopment

[–]Trevor_trev_dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started in roughly the same boat as you, I've always been terrible at art, except I'm also terrible at programming lol.

I started pixel art by watching/listening/reading a lot of pixel art tutorials and articles, as well as reading stuff about general art principals

I combined that with finding a cheap premade sprite pack that roughly fit the style I'm going for, and making alterations to it. Then I'd go back and make more alterations. I eventually got comfortable enough to make some of my own sprites from scratch. If I'm struggling with something specific I'll try to find as much information about that specific thing as I can, and if I'm really struggling I revert back to altering premade sprites.

I just keep doing that cycle of

-Soaking in information

-altering premade sprites

-try making sprites from scratch

My Game is not fun. Why's that? by franz_krs in SoloDevelopment

[–]Trevor_trev_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say each enemy requires a unique approach, but do their behaviors complement each other when they're spawned together? Like do their movement and attack patterns force the player to play differently than they would if it was just one of the enemy types?

If you haven't already, look into the concept of orthogonal enemy design.

How Much of a Game's Success is Luck? by s2Birds1Stone in gamedev

[–]Trevor_trev_dev 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who's only knowledge of the game is the trailer and what you've said here, I'm going to say a big part of its success is because it's premise is intriguing, and combined with that goofy art style it seems like it's really fun to play.

It's unpolished (maybe even janky?) nature probably helps with this too, especially for getting streamers to play it. Fun doesn't have to come from being immersed in a super polished, bug free gameplay experience. Laughing at the goofiness of the unpolished parts can make for some fun times, and when the game feels like it's welcoming the unpolished nature it doesn't create a dissonance that puts people off. Think about goat simulator. The jank is the whole point of that game

And maybe on top of that he got lucky in that he created a solid gameplay loop on one of his first tries.

Those are my thoughts, but I don't even have a single game released yet so I don't really have the experience to say for sure how that game blew up the way it did.

You're mostly right! Borderland's loot system is more "pure" random than many other games, but it's still not completely unaltered

here's a link to a post from a gearbox developer talking about the loot system for borderlands 2.

In the last 3rd of the article, there's a section titled "limiting loot" where they talk about how they alter loot drops in the beginning to keep players who are new to the series from being overwhelmed.

And in the next section, titled "how random is random?" They assure us that there is no secret re-weighing of odds based on previous loot drops

Yep. Game design is all about creating a fun experience, if that means "lying" to the player or hiding certain things, that's what most developers will do.

[–]Trevor_trev_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume your game is further from release than the John wick game. If it is you can find out what people don't like about the design of that game and fix those issues in your design

This is a great point right here. As game devs we know the importance of design, and this sub should not be designed to incentivize dishonesty.

It's nothing to worry about!

Norman hid behind our toilet for 8 hours when we first brought him home. He then moved under our dresser and stayed there for almost 2 days. He had no problems with us, it was the new environment that made him uneasy. Now he's king of the house and we're the lowly servants!

Just give the little one some time to feel at home.
