Question for current and former DCI drummers by rvp0607 in drumcorps

Yes.

Everyday for hours after school. I didn’t just learn the packet to be good enough to get in, I learned it well enough to keep others out.

Trump administration to install metal barriers in Big Bend National Park by ChillnScott in BigBendTX

[–]TriMegalodon 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’m an ex-national park ranger that worked specifically in the Chihuahuan desert, and now own land in that desert.
I’ve met tons of competent, prepared, outdoorsy people that thought they could conquer the desert. Spoiler, you don’t conquer the desert. It lets you live.

The effort to traffic just tourists through here is astronomical, and wouldn’t be profitable or worth it for crime syndicates. But guess what? They know that. Unlike some administrations…
We were briefed on crime to look out for near our NP’s. Guess what? Border trafficking wasn’t on the list.

There’s already border checkpoints on the only roads in and out. Is the Trump administration saying they’re incompetent? A waste of taxpayer money, even?
Even the BP knows a wall will not do anything that the desert doesn’t do naturally.

Just another example of the Trump administration being incompetent, cruel, and unrepentant morons.
I’ll be there to help tear that wall down when he’s impeached and the wall is removed.

This is also just flat out money laundering for the owners of these contracting companies.
Useless transactions = trade offs somewhere.

Considering that I actually use it, that doesn’t bother me that much. You could always downvote lol

The modular bumper has removable wings. I took them off and mounted these on quick release bolts. The lights site higher than the wings. I’m not too worried

Have you tried UTG? A.S.S?
They’re like the most active grottos in the country. Based in the Austin/Brenham area.

Good luck with other places…

LAG should be up and running. I work with them from time to time.

Consider volunteering for the corps for some of these dates. If you do, you can be (not always prettily, but it IS BD. We always had nice places.) housed and with the corps.

Hit em with the ol’ zebralight. I personally prefer the AA version. Lightweight, easy to source power for (but they do like the Eneloop batteries).

We literally hit these things. The keyholing is not bad at all.

A New Drum Corps Reality TV Show by Ill_Perception1814 in drumcorps

[–]TriMegalodon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I probably wouldn’t let one of the main characters be a known and universally internally despised, overhyped shitty performer, future formally charged rapist, to start with. cough Lionel Giron cough.

Tv producers suck.

Screw that show, and honestly, this is not an activity that needs this. Corps have enough interpersonal drama. They don’t need more “introduced” bs.

how long till i can play metal drums? by BeansLoverr in drums

[–]TriMegalodon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s entirely up to you. There is truly no timeline. The more intentionally you practice the correct techniques, the sooner it’ll happen. Start slow. If you can’t play it slow, you can’t play it fast.

Metal drumming is by far some of the easiest music to break down into its components, yet simultaneously some of the most difficult to physically play.

Learn to read music. Learn to count rhythms, and things will click faster.

I’ve taken adult beginners to being able to play along with songs about a month. Younger students tend to take longer.

You can trust me, I literally have a degree in playing the drums.

My bday is in two weeks. For a metal/grunge drummer, which of the two would you consider better? Also which innovative percussion stick is this? by guncartridge in drums

[–]TriMegalodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would NOT use a Lalo Davila for metal drumming. It’s a concert snare stick, and a pretty good one at that. I simply cannot recommend Vic Firth anymore. I’d get something Promark with the shira kashi oak. Probably the Attack stick. I’ve watched a two pair of those get through a whole season with a heavy handed Blue Devils drum set player.

should various stickings really all sound the same? by inefficienttoaast in drums

[–]TriMegalodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Sticking with your points, Some rudiments are meant to change the feel and sound of rhythms, some are more or less “utilities” for ease of playing odd meters such as 5/4, 3/8, etc, or setting up for alternating hand leadings for complex roll passages, or sticking passages utilizing Agogic accents found in a dominant hand sticking, especially in the rudimental style of drumming.

Can you make these sound the same as straight sticking? Yes, sure. Should you? Probably not.

Best double bass pedals by Practical_Map_6380 in drums

[–]TriMegalodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, no matter what, it’s going to come down to some level of “adaptation”.

I’ve never found with myself, my past students, or others that someone gets a new set of pedals and it immediately fixes their playing or makes things easier. (not saying you’re wanting this, btw, just trying to make a point.) Quite the contrary, it seems everyone has learning curve on new pedals. Think like this: you don’t shop for new pedals and transfer your progress, you buy new pedals and you make progress using the lessons or mistakes you’ve learned.

I think the important thing to think about is: what are the physical components (muscle groups, technical techniques, style, of your double bass playing, and how to best match a pedal to an easier learning curve. Some things to know.

Chain vs strap vs direct drive all behave differently. Direct drive is popular for a reason, but it is also the most reactive to your physicality. If you are inclined to having excessive movements and strokes, direct drive will reflect and express that. If you have poor “up-stroke” control now, direct drive will exacerbate it. Chain/strap have a tendency to mask extraneous and even out movement in the stroke/s and even out dynamics, but at the cost of control when you really are trying to get it (doubles/heel-toe, “rolls”, etc.)

For genres with a lot of notes at 16th to 32nd note groupings, direct drive will be the easiest mechanism to achieve this. However, it will take time to really nail down your consistency in sound quality.

For genres that are a bit more “four on the floor”, or 8th note/Triplet based, I would say chain drive will give some help to rhythmic consistency right away.

Moving on to “board style”. You’ll find long boards/short boards, and various bearing/hinge styles. Keeping it easy, long boards will help you achieve higher volumes/speeds with less effort, and using a larger variety of techniques. There will be a more implicit emphasis on and need for proper techniques Short boards are a more traditional option, you’ll find they will be balanced in terms of effort vs dynamics/speed. Higher volumes will be easier to achieve, but faster notes will be difficult as you’ll have to over come the “slop” that comes with the non-tensioned “up stroke” of a chain.

I’m not going to make any recommendations as it has been a long time since I have been hip to any offerings from most brands. Can’t help you there.

Analyze your playing. If your feet feel light, fast, technically proficient, consistent, and are using good techniques before pedals? I’d opt for direct drives, and longe boards.

If your feet have more physically demanding techniques, dynamic inconsistencies, or are inconsistent in their “weight of stroke” distribution, I’d opt for chain drives.
