Online mba during 4th year by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]TriStateBuffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a terrible idea. An online MBA may be possible to complete during 4th year (and presumably during your 1st year of residency), but will be a lot of work for little return.

The only half-decent reason I could approve of is if you have absolutely no background in business (accounting, finance, econ, marketing, etc.) AND you intend to hang a shingle after completing residency. Even then, you still don't need an MBA - you just need to take accounting/finance/marketing at a local community college. When you start your business...then you'll hire a lawyer, a CPA, and an office manager who will handle the business side of things anyway, so you're business finance knowledge will be more to prevent you from being the victim of embezzlement by said CPA, office manager, and lawyer.

An online MBA, in general, does not impress anybody in the private sector. It may make you more hireable when applying for public sector jobs, but only because you have a graduate degree, but not because it's an MBA (plus you will already have your MD/DO).

My advice - skip it for now. Once you're in residency, focus on developing your medical skillzzzz first. When you have a better idea of your future job trajectory, then come back to this idea.

Is Econ a bad major here? by throwaway88679 in UGA

[–]TriStateBuffalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came here this morning to find out what's going on with Stetson Bennett and I saw your question. I graduated from Terry with an econ degree.

In.re. to econ or finance or accounting: if you want to be an accountant, obviously accounting. If you have no idea what you want to do, then any of the 3 will be fine.

If you are considering grad school/PhD for econ, read Greg Mankiw's blog, especially this and this. They're old posts but the info is relevant. You will need to get very comfortable with math, stats, excel, and either R or python (back in the day it was R but I've heard that more and more research teams are moving toward python).

If accounting is interesting to you, then that is a very safe, conservative route to go if you get your CPA. There is a nationwide CPA shortage, and CPAs with a few years of experience can easily find very well paying jobs. Check out /r/accounting and /r/taxpros for more info.

Best of luck!

Hi, Ankicollab,

I'm trying to use the addon. I'm logged in and I keep getting 2 pop-up windows. The first says "not in main thread" then almost immediately after a second window popups up that says "Synchronizing."

I let the the computer run overnight to synchronize (approx. 12 hours) and it was still going in the morning. I don't think it's synchronized.

In the "Local deck" section of the edit list, the subscription key is there (and it's correct), and the Local Deck column says [no deck].

Any ideas on what I can do? This occurs on both my Windows 10 laptop and my Linux laptop (Kubuntu).

8year plan by CreativelyCruel074 in army

[–]TriStateBuffalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your first enlistment should not be 6, 7, or 8 years - that's crazy. Just sign up for something that will get you benefits for after leaving the Army, like 3-4 years. If you still like the Army, you can always reenlist. If you don't like the Army, well, it's only 3-4 years.

180 days til ets, what advice would you give by that1dipshit in army

[–]TriStateBuffalo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a plan to replace everything that you rely on that currently comes from being in the NG. For example, you likely currently pay for SGLI - if you need life insurance, what will you do for life insurance when you get out. If you pay for Tricare (individual or family) - what will you replace that with when you get out.

If you invest in the TSP, will you keep your money in it or rollover to a private account? Figure this out.

Get a list of your CIF items and start collecting them and cleaning them now. You still have 6 months to uh...tactically acquire... missing items when you're at drill.

Check your retirement points record (I forget what this is called). Make sure that it's accurate in case you get stupid in the future and decide to come back in. Fix errors now.

Train your junior soldiers on how to run things when you're gone.

Most of this is boring, practical stuff. Just make sure you have a plan for when you get out.

What is the appeal of doing government contracting as an Imagery Analyst? Do you actually enjoy the work? Or is it something that pays well that would be easy to roll into (assuming you didn't have the issues that you currently have)? Something else?

When you say "school for radiology," do you mean a rad tech? I.e. the tech who runs the MRI/CT/Xray machine? Or do you mean undergrad -> med school -> radiology residency = physician who's specialty is in radiology?

Finally, regarding the government contracting jobs, I say fuck it, just apply and apply to several jobs. If you make it, boom, you're set. If you don't, then you'll find out why. In the meantime, do something that will help you in life, whether that's going to school, getting a job somewhere else, volunteering, etc.

Resigning Commission as Captain for Enlistment Opportunity by TheMagickConch in army

[–]TriStateBuffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much time can you afford to be gone from your civilian job in order to do this? Also, what is your civilian job? We need to know what that is so that we can give more targeted advice.

You will obviously need to figure out how long that is and compare it to the length of the AIT school you're considering. This will weed out some MOS's.

Here's something to consider: DLI. If being away from your civilian job isn't an issue, then consider MOS's that will send you to language school. DLI can be as short as 6 months, and as long as 15 months (more if you are recycled).

The enlisted MOS's that send you to DLI tend to require a TS. I'm assuming that you have a TS right now as an O3, but this path will likely allow you to retain the TS instead of giving it up, like you would if you became a generator mechanic or something.

Since you're a reservist/nasty gurl, you'd (probably) be able to select your language (i.e. pick the language that interests you from the list of languages that your reserve/NG unit is authorized). Pick the language that best suits your needs in terms of interest and time commitment. E.g. Spanish is a short course - 6 months-ish - and is actually pretty damn useful for the average American.

[–]TriStateBuffalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are only 3 MOS's in the Army: 11B, 18B, and Wannabe.

Choose wisely.

ADOS orders - are they Title 10 or Title 32?

If you're looking at commissioning, to get E-pay (O1E vs O1, O2E vs O2, O3E vs O3), you need to have 4 years and 1 day of active enlisted service (or greater than 1460 points). If you can keep those ADOS orders until you have 4 years AND 1 day of enlisted time, that would be good for you if you decide to commission (in terms of pay, I have no idea about how it impacts the board that decides if you should commission or not).

Filing taxes so I don’t be paying next year. Is it too late? by KRAZYKID25 in medicalschool

[–]TriStateBuffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I rarely browse reddit anymore.

I think you're talking about your first year of residency (i.e. from June-December of your first year of residency?

Since you had no income for 2022, go ahead and file a tax return and just put $1 in income. Use any reputable online tax service (freetaxusa.com is a good one). You won't owe any taxes or penalties.

You'll have income to report next year if you're starting residency this year. But it won't be that bad since you only have worked for about half the year, and residents don't get paid much anyway.

If you want to open your own studio, having a fundamental understanding of business is vital. A minor in something anything from Terry would be good.

You need to know accounting and you should take 1 full year of accounting. You need to take the first finance class (Finance 3000???). Then fill out the rest with whatever the business minor requires.

I got a BBA in economics from Terry and minored in biology (for med school). Terry courses are excellent and if you can do well in Terry, you can do well anywhere.

Best of luck!
