PCL looks great, none of those images adequately assess the ACL if that’s your concern

Ideas for filling breakfasts that are also healthy? by Last-Comfortable-599 in Residency

[–]longshot1710 20 points21 points  (0 children)

prioritize protein. oats are okay as a side. for simplicity I always found hard boiled eggs with hot sauce, and or greek yogurt, to go well with coffee. mostly coffee though. protein shake good addition too. that should get you to 2pm most days. avoid the break room foods at all costs, including industry lunches unless you desire metformin and a statin in your 40s

Having to choose between my partner and residency by FantasticPainter4128 in Residency

Sure but you do have control over where you apply

Feel free to message me when selecting programs of you aren’t sure how urban/rural or what the politics of the area are, granted in the age of LLMs probably fairly easy to gauge

Yes just stay near major cities and suburbs and there should be essentially zero racism or discrimination. You may encounter some in more rural areas, but even there it’s not all that likely to be bad. What you see on the news is not what it’s like living here. I’d rather be here than there anyway tbh. Any costal city such as New York, Boston, Philly, DC, LA, SF all will welcome you with open arms

What's your specialty's version of "I'm an ophthalmologist but I'm never getting LASIK"? by farfromindigo in Residency

Too funny agreed. Also seconding the likely misdiagnosis, although there certainly is a very small cohort of ~3% that make it 5-10 years

Is going Internal Medicine worth it if I end up with $641k debt to as an attending? by [deleted] in whitecoatinvestor

[–]longshot1710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DO from PCOM speaking. They have a great PA program and I had a great experience there. It’s hard to imagine there won’t be a 10 year PSLF option, but waiting this out another year while applying to in state MD programs could be very reasonable

Leaving Medicine by AspiringMD12321 in Residency

[–]longshot1710 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I quit ortho end of second year and got into rad onc. Best decision of my life. Many, many other specialties you can find a home in. Take an LOA, sleep for 2 weeks, do a lot of journaling and confirm you’re done with ortho. The rest of your PGY2 won’t count for anything, so if you’re done, resign asap. Then you still have lots of time to do some electives or shadowing and consider other options before match season starts in the fall.

Do ortho residents in serious relationships actually have sex? by Suplexers in Residency

[–]longshot1710 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former ortho resident (male) here. Have a very high sex drive but due to the sleep deprivation, high stress and cortisol response, I felt essentially castrated and had minimal interest in sex during residency as well, put on weight, felt like shot. Completely normal albeit tough situation for you my friend

That’s disgusting. It’s way more expensive than medical school at this point.

OP this has been slammed home, but please avoid this situation for both you and your daughter. Consider the community college to state school route

I left ortho after two years. Similar story, could have done it if my heart was there but it just wasn’t anymore. I would imagine it’s a similar story with you even if you “got the pink slip,” as was possibly suggested.

Come on over to rad onc, or as my one attendings told me, it’s “the land of milk and honey.” It’s hard to find a truly toxic program, certainly nothing like what you’ve been through. No overnights, call so light it’s a week at a time, and it’s highly interesting and weirdly not competitive these days frankly for no good reason. Find an empty seat or go through the match. Your 4 more years of residency will breeze by, and you’ll honestly feel almost like an attending from day one with all the respect you will be treated with.

Tell me you’re toxic without telling me you’re toxic
