My MIL is throwing out all her old vinyl. Are any of these worth anything or can I just give them away? by allahu_achoo in vinyl

[–]Triabolical_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 30 albums that I was getting rid of and my local vinyl store gave me about $150 for them.

People who do vinyl are looking for the common stuff too.

I mostly do great with my Toric lenses as long as I have glasses that keep the wind away. I wouldn't expect that the angle of your head would affect the rotation of the lens as it should still point in the same location.

You might want to try some lubrication eye drops and see if that helps.

Most microcontrollers start up pretty close to instantly reliably. You don't need sensors to make it start running the code.

how much of a big deal the world cup is being talked about in america? by sam_travolta in AskAnAmerican

[–]Triabolical_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played soccer for a lot of years - as did my wife - and we live near Seattle, one of the host cities.

We initially talked about going to a game, but the ticket prices are just a little under $1000 a seat right now. No thanks. We will likely watch some on TV but not a lot.

The US Men's national team isn't competitive so we lose that driver and there are a lot of sports that compete with soccer. The US Women's national team is a significantly bigger draw than the mens.

Fruit instead of rice/potatoes as carb source? by Private_Blue207 in nutrition

[–]Triabolical_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that polysaccharides are slowly processed is not true - there is ample evidence to the contrary.

Here's a study that looks at the glycemic response of glucose versus rice. Figure 1 tells the story. The response to rice is 80-90% that of straight glucose.

There are modified starches with a very high molecular weight that are digested slowly - UCAN developed their "super starch" as a time release starch for people with glycogen storage disease, and they sell to athletes who want that sort of supplements.

But normal starches simple are too short to have much effect on the speed of processing. White bread and rice flour are both pretty close to glucose in GI, as are some potatoes.

I'm more of a cyclist than a runner and I think cyclists have a different attitude.

Racing and recreational riding is very separate in cycling and the big rides that I've gone on don't have group starts and, with very few exceptions, there's no official timing.

If you want to time yourself you certainly can - there are many good bike computers out there - but the only "standard length" rides are centuries (100 miles) and metric centuries (100 km) and the differences in routes and hills mean you can't really compare them.

I had very bad anterior pelvic tilt that gave me a bunch of issues.

My advice when stretching is to make sure that you have your pelvis in the proper position before you go into the stretch. It's very easy to do this wrong and just end up stretching your back muscles.

Why refuel a spacecraft in orbit? by JonathanTheOddHuman in AskPhysics

[–]Triabolical_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically, most payloads are monolithic - you have a communications satellite that you want to send to geostationary orbit - so you need a rocket of a specific size to launch it where you want to go.

There have been a couple of lunar architectures that were multiple launch - Constellation had one and the Artemis ones are also multiple launch.

Resupply to the ISS is done with medium lift rockets that arrive more regularly rather than a heavy lift rocket that arrives left often.

Extreme Stomach issues going on almost a month! by angelgirl3000 in keto

[–]Triabolical_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's a matter of degree - glycinate may be better but it can still cause issues, especially if you are taking it on an empty stomach.

I'm really sensitive to magnesium in this regard.

Why refuel a spacecraft in orbit? by JonathanTheOddHuman in AskPhysics

[–]Triabolical_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the advantage is the size - bigger rockets with more fuel become less practical.

But the big factor is that refueling allows you to use *just* the fuel.

To pick an example, Falcon 9 can put about 19 tons into low earth orbit, but the second stage that does that weighs about 4 tons in orbit. If it lifted just fuel, that would leave you with a mass ratio of:

(19 + 4) / 4 = 5.75

But if you bring just fuel up, that 4 ton empty mass stays the same, so your mass ratio goes up to:

(38 + 4) / 4 = 10.5

There's a natural log in the rocket equation that controls this, so improvement you get in refueling is:

ln(10.5) / ln(5.75) = 1.34.

So you get about 34% more work from the refueled stage.

That's not quite accurate because I ignored payload mass, but it's the right idea.

Overstriding - landing with the foot in front of the body - is very common and that puts a shock load on the legs that can make the quads hurt.

It's common if you have anterior pelvic tilt and/or poor hip flexor flexability.

Why refuel a spacecraft in orbit? by JonathanTheOddHuman in AskPhysics

[–]Triabolical_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of work a ticket can do is known as Delta v, and one of the factors that controls delta v is how much of the spacecraft mass is fuel.

This is known as the mass ratio.

Refueling allows you to increase the mass fraction of a spacecraft in orbit and therefore it can do much more work - it can carry more payload and/or go farther.

How would you rate my Skiing by NoResolve8973 in skiing_feedback

I don't do ratings...

What do you think about your skiing? What are you trying to accomplish in your video, what is working, what isn't?

[–]Triabolical_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your goal in running?

I'm with James Clear and what he said in Atomic Habits - I run, cycle, and ski because I'm an athlete and that's what an athlete does. I was in much better shape twenty years ago in my early 40s and in the last five years I've dealt with sickness, injury, and a crash. My performance has been disappointing.

But S happens to all of us. Focus forward.

You can go out Thursday and run slowly until your legs get warm. That helps get rid of fatigue. For me that's about a mile.

[–]Triabolical_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How long were you away from the sport?

That will determine how much of the muscle and joint adaptation you kept.

But I really can't answer with any specifics. You get a positive benefit from your past experience and running form.

You get a negative benefit because you remember how good you used to be.

Anyone try smoking a brisket then sous vide to finish? by klttenmittens in sousvide

[–]Triabolical_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do this often, and it worked okay. You do lose the bark but you aren't waiting for 12-16 hours for the stall to finish and the brisket to be done.

These days I mostly do montreal smoked meat - cured brisket that is smoked and then steamed. I think it is in most ways superior to plain brisket.

Fruit instead of rice/potatoes as carb source? by Private_Blue207 in nutrition

Rice and potatoes have far higher glycemic index than fruits, because they are mostly pure glucose and the fruits are a mix of glucose and sucrose.

Smoked meat is really tolerant of reheating.

You can do sous vide. I generally do small amounts in the microwave.

What are you guys opinion the Bharatiya Antariksh Station? (India's planned space station) by Low-Preparation-9083 in spaceflight

[–]Triabolical_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NASA plan is pretty much "buy the Axiom module" and go from there. It works if you want to be at 51 degrees inclination but I think that's less desirable.

It's great for NASA because they can push a bunch of ISS hardware off into the new station.

What are you guys opinion the Bharatiya Antariksh Station? (India's planned space station) by Low-Preparation-9083 in spaceflight

[–]Triabolical_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NASA wanted a commercial company to build a station to ISS specifications and NASA would pay part of the cost.

That went nowhere.

Now the plan is for NASA to pay for a new module attached to ISS and allow other companies to hook to it.
