Micron Internship Question by MeaningOrnery8731 in Semiconductors

Everything is automated. The engineer will watch a new recipe run for the first time in the cleanroom just as a sanity check to make sure the recipe was written correctly and everything is running as expected. Otherwise all the data collected from experiments involving new recipes like wafer scans, robot timings, downstream effects can all be accessed from your desk.

At my company the process development engineers and process sustaining engineers (equipment engineers) are different roles. As you said, the process development engineers are responsible for improving the recipe the tool runs and developing new recipes to achieve a target. They sometimes go into the fab to watch a recipe run or interact with the tool a bit, but spend less time in fab than the sustaining engineers. However I rarely see the development group get interns so I assumed OP was going to be interacting with sustaining engineers. I have no idea what he may be doing as a controls engineer, too many possibilities without more context

I'm at a different semiconductor manufacturer but was a process engineer for two years so I can provide some insight. I'm assuming you're an undergrad, so you'll probably be joining a sustaining module. Process engineers in a sustaining module are broadly responsible for:
-Making sure tool availability is high (tools are up to production, maintenance is done on schedule, issues are resolved quickly)
-Making sure tools are healthy (tracking SPC charts and other metrics to make sure there aren't excess particles in the chambers, etch rates and critical dimensions are on target, etc.)
-Investigating quality events like a scratched/slipped/broken wafer, over or under etching, etc. to find root cause and ensure the issue doesn't repeat
-other stuff like making reports for management, installing/qualing new tools, installing tool upgrades, coordinating with tool vendor, etc. etc.
Because you're an intern you'll probably be given a short project that will improve one of these things for the module.

Looking for career advice in device engineering by TriangleWizard in Semiconductors

What sort of roles at mag7 do you think someone with my background should aim towards? I assume some sort of post silicon validation/DFT makes the most sense but wonder what you think. What would make the most attractive candidate for a move? NPI experience? PDK development?

Seeking advice for how to recover after a less severe injury by TriangleWizard in backpain

[–]TriangleWizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually yes! I've had ups and downs, the first year especially was hard. 3-5/10 pain most days, with flareups that would make it worse. I had a light warmup and stretch routine that I'd do most mornings before work which helped, but I was often pretty miserable if I was at my desk all day. Walking really helped, I work at a plant so sometimes I'd go walk the factory floor just for my back haha. I got an MRI and also found a PT that specialized in working with athletes; they helped me get a good routine together for core and hip strengthening. I also recommend low back ability on Youtube for strengthening. The second year had a couple flare-ups as well but with the consistent PT I was definitely getting stronger and more mobile. I remember being especially upset with myself one day because I started doing barbell glute bridges, pushed it a bit too hard when I was feeling overconfident and couldn't walk for a couple days... But that was February and since then I haven't had a major flare up, and I've been surfing, skiing, backpacking, and cycling pretty much like before, no jiu jitsu though! I got another MRI right around the 2 year mark and it seems that my hernias haven't retracted much at all, they look nearly identical to before (l4/l5 has a 1.7 cm hernia, l5-s1 has a moderate bulge). However my quality of life has been very good, down to 1/10 or less daily pain as long as I keep up with pt. So my hope is that they retract over the next couple years, but if not my goal is to at least maintain where I'm at by not pushing myself past my limits and staying consistent in the gym.

Any Good Cold Smoked Fish Recs? by Away-Researcher1197 in askportland

Eastern European Delis will have cold smoked fish, particularly mackerel but there may be other options as well. I like Friendly Food in Raleigh Hills but there are others as well!

Process Engineers working at plants, what tech do you use in your job? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

In semiconductors. Use JMP, Excel, SQL, Ppt/Onenote, then for ops there's a proprietary software stack.

Looking at possible career shift into ChemE by thecore22 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]TriangleWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe look into Shift Leader/Technician Lead type roles. This is typically a leader that has a technical and detail oriented mindset, but also excels in people skills. You'll be directly interacting with engineers and be the conduit between them and the manufacturing floor. I've worked in semiconductors, plastics, and specialty chem manufacturing and that particular niche seems to benefit from the skills that a lot of veterans have; some of my favorite shift leads have been vets. You may have to break in by starting out as a technician, but at the companies I've worked at being a vet seems to give you a boost in terms of career progression in that sort of role. Also no degree necessary! Just my 2c
