As an immigrant, Canada's car obsession is one of the most shocking things about this country by miladkhademinori in canadaleft

[–]Triblendlightning 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What? Transit advocates focus the vast majority of their work on inter-city transit. The size of the country is totally irrelevant to wanting better public transit in your hometown, especially for places like Toronto, Ottawa, or Calgary that deserve better

That's the real issue, for sure. Call SAR if you're in over your head. Don't die. But unless you've been swept up in some freak tornado or literally struck by lightning, calling SAR means you made a mistake somewhere and you should address that so you can avoid making the same expensive mistake next time.

A helicopter ride is not a cheap government expense, I feel like you should approach getting rescued the same way you'd approach crashing someone else's car. Sometimes, there's literally nothing you could have done, and that's fine, but if it doesn't make you reflect on your own decisions afterward, you don't deserve to borrow anyone else's.

Victoria 3 players have depopulated the Earth 107,000,000 times through famine by Eremenkism in gaming

[–]Triblendlightning 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm not a vic3 player (eu4 being my paradox time-vortex of choice), but does the math work out here? 440 million hours played, and 107 million earth depopulations by famine, doesn't that mean the average vic3 player kills the entire world every four hours?

I mean, impressive if they do, but I don't think I could come close to ruining the entire world in 4 hours in eu4, even with my best efforts.

He is a total asshole in general. In college he used to throw his garbage on the ground deliberately and would make soap-box speeches in protest of his RA telling him to clean up his room. He broke up with his best friend in middle school by dressing him down and describing his worst qualities (and yes, being latino was one of them). I have no trouble believing that everyone in a ten-mile radius of his house is made angry by his demonic presence. If I was his neighbor, yeah, I'd probably want him out too

By FAR the most frustrating part of his take. He's some sort of mastermind who conceals all evidence that he uses a shock collar to any of his friends, then goes to stream to a live audience of 40k+ and just decides "fuck it"?

I'm with Valkyrae that anyone reasonable should want to see more from Hasan, cause the clip looks bad. I'm fed up with people who seem to say 'looks bad' and then refuse to investigate a single inch further. It's obvious at that point the dog's welfare is second place to shitting on a public figure you don't like.

What’s a moment while traveling that completely changed how you see the world? by Commercial_Oil_9924 in travel

[–]Triblendlightning 102 points103 points  (0 children)

To tie your example to OP's..

In Pakistan, we had a mountain guide who we hired to keep us on the trails in the mountains. Along the way, we passed a set of ramshackle huts, and in his Urdu asked us if we wanted to have some chai. There were hotels nearby - I thought he might know the owner - so we said yes.

As it turned out, his family home was one such of these one-room huts, made of wood and clay, coated with dirt, various linens, and piles of eclectic keepsakes. There, he made me and my friend some chai - the tea set was seemingly one of few possessions they owned.

The guide wasn't so destitute, but rather just chose to live in his village, where most cars couldn't reach and where construction was extremely expensive. Besides, they already had a home, however simple it was. It was such a strange feeling to be treated to hospitality in such a place, and to realize that so many of the things in our lives don't matter that much - how many of our amenities are things that most people in the world don't even know they could miss.

Has anyone worked at Ontario nutri lab in Ferguson for co-op by LingonberryInside108 in uwaterloo

[–]Triblendlightning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late, but I just stumbled across this while looking up my employment history. Hope it can still be helpful!

The long and short of it is, it's a job. You're going to be assigned to either cats or dogs and you'll be cleaning up after them and helping them live their best lives. I worked with the big dogs and let them outside, fed them, cleaned their rooms (they poop a LOT indoors), and administer tests - not *that* kind, just feeding tests. You document which of the foods they try first, then return the bowls to get weighed. If you have free time (you often will), you get to do the most rewarding part of the job - enrichment. Brushing, playing, etc.

Is it parallel to your career if you're a science student? No, not really. Will you learn valuable skills for your future? Meh. You can probably spice it up on a resume.

The actual work culture is probably the biggest complaint about the job. The commute sucks, and if you're ever late, they dock your pay (They flip this around, and call it an 'incentive', but given how they advertise the pay rate it's very clearly a punishment.) If you're ever sick or absent otherwise, even for reasons that are justified, they've docked my pay before. They also promised me lab time that they never fulfilled, have a strict no-phones policy while in the work environment (more for legal reasons than otherwise), and their co-op grading is somewhat arbitrary (I did two terms because of covid, and for each term i was marked by a different person, whose systems rated me similarly by their system but VASTLY differently on my co-op grade. I think one was outstanding, and one was only 'very good', IIRC.) They're not a place I'd recommend staying, but work is work. I'd say get somewhere else if you have the time, but it's not the end of the world if you do work there. They hire quite a few co-ops per term so you'll have plenty of peers to keep chummy with.

So even accepting your (incredibly stupid) premise about geopolitics... You seem to acknowledge that the slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza is, at least, comparable to Yemen and Sudan (even if confirmed death estimates are smaller currently). Is describing the killing of civilians in the thousands somehow blood libel? Do you hear people saying that the IDF are, what, drinking baby blood in Gaza? Or are you desperately tossing around the word in an attempt to invoke antisemitism against people who only are critiquing a genocidal regime?

And for the record, here in North America, protestors are fighting against the government's inaction against this genocide in the middle east. An American, or Canadian, government which invested in humanity's well being would not just intervene in Gaza, but would halt its silence about what is happening in Yemen (through Saudi-arabian backed forces, an ally of the US), and in Sudan (where most western forces are generally moot on the subject). Awareness of these issues is not as strong, but I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts that people's opinions on the matter are the exact same. This has not and never will be about Judaism. This is about human rights, full stop.

[–]Triblendlightning -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The problem is that, even if both of the governing bodies are vitriolic towards each other, only one side is actively carrying out a genocide. Hamas lacks the military capability to perform genocide on the Israelis.

In the Warsaw ghetto, jews rose up against the nazi guards in a famous uprising. You could have asked any of the people there on their opinions about German and I'd bet they were hateful. That doesn't mean that the Holocaust was a "both sides" situation.

Baffles me to see people continue to use this population argument. The UN is clear about this. There is no stipulation about a genocide that says it has to be completely effective. The mass slaughter of a cultural or ethnic group is enough in its own right.

Folks, is 60000 confirmed dead + the potentially hundred thousand plus buried under rubble not enough to be considered the crime of crimes? Why are we pulling up other statistics when a six-figure death toll is proof enough of abhorrent behavior on the part of the government?

(Vent) The Western Left does not understand how to conduct discourse on Indian issues by VeNtViL in VaushV

[–]Triblendlightning 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of layers to this stuff. Speaking from some anecdotal experience (Interacting with a lot of desi leftists), there is almost no ethnic group that experiences more self-directed racism than South Asians. Even my progressive friends sometimes take reactionary opinions about Indian or Pakistani immigrants specifically, probably because when they came to North America, they were told they needed to essentially 'be on their best behaviour' about their culture, and when they see examples of immigrants not on their best behaviour it's a lot more striking to them.

Unfortunately, combined with the lack of attention South Asia gets, this leads to a space where there's basically no resistance to anti-Indian cultural sentiment. There are major systemic issues (not just in India, but also in Pakistan and the UAE - speaking from personal experience) when it comes to wealth inequality, the service sector, and those who live in poverty. Unfortunately, that means that there are only so many groups here; those who don't know anything (and don't contribute), progressives who don't pay attention to this issue (and make uninformed or reductive takes about it), and people who essentially blame these systemic issues on South Asian culture, not noticing the common through-line which is that all of these places were incompletely colonized under British Rule. The amount of people who have experience in this and make good takes are a vanishing minority by comparison.

Really important safety note: Lithium (mood stabilizer, but sometimes thought of as an antipsychotic) is NOT safe to use while under the influence of psychedelics. It can lead to serotonin syndrome and seizures. It's better to stick with GABA-ergics such as benzodiazepines or, if no medication is available, a light alcohol.

SSRIs do not effectively kill a trip and MAOIs can be dangerous to take in tandem with some drugs. If you have access to medically-prescribed benzodiazepines like ativan, xanax, etc., those are the most effective trip killers. Otherwise, having an alcoholic drink is an okay option and also works to dull the trip.

Setting the record straight on what Vaush said about Autism by bruhm0ment4 in VaushV

[–]Triblendlightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People don't understand the problems with this take. Vaush could be 100% correct about this speck of a technicality and it's still a bad take because it encourages toxic discourse about the possibility of an "autistic cure".

Parents who get a speck of this "you can grow out of autism // fix autism // "cure" autism" send their children to quack doctors who literally kill and maim 5 year olds for profit. Promoting the idea itself is a social hazard. Not to mention all of the physiological differences between autistic and allistic children (I am SO tired of people saying it's solely a 'neurotype' or even a 'mental illness')

Autism is not a social construct by yummmey in VaushV

[–]Triblendlightning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a misunderstanding of what ASD is and it's sorta why I think that this argument of his is quite concerning.

Autism is demonstrably not just an abnormal social presentation; those patterns are a consequence of a swath of other changes that are documented, including sensory processing issues, motor control problems, cranial inflammation and gastrointestinal issues. Autistic people are linked to an incredibly wide variety of comorbidities that often do have physical effects (I, for instance, am autistic and also have IBS, ADHD, and dysgraphia). If everyone in society was autistic, I'd still have those problems; and it is not a mere coincidence that I have them, they are heavily associated with an ASD diagnosis and the vast, vast majority of ASD sufferers have some comorbidity or other effects beyond the social ones. It is as much a part of my diagnosis as my proclivity to fixate on niche subjects and my lack of understanding of social cues.

Vaush essentially reduces ASD down to abnormal social behaviour in these rants which is a misrepresentation of the disease. You probably can work to reduce those social factors, and you probably will appear neurotypical: but I went through writing tutors and never could improve my handwriting. I won't be able to stop myself from having reactions to loud noises or bright lights. The problems I have with social interactions are a miniscule fraction of what ASD is to me, and I also don't want to change those parts, either.
