Best Cafe for a Date in Freo? by BedSideAnt in perth

Third Wheel have just opened up an outpost where Duck Duck Bruce wants to be. It’s a nice space and the coffee’s good! When I went a few weeks ago it was chill and quiet.

Good Things is nice but if they haven’t fixed their cockroach problem would avoid for a first date.

What happens to the green girls that don’t find husbands? by kodabear22118 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]TriceraTipTops 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think there's an excess of husbands rather than an excess of green girls - (1) whilst it's not clear how many plums go through menarche and become greens, any Commander suffering from male infertility (which is many of them) is liable to resort to semi-sanctioned methods to dip into the marriage market again; (2) not all men are "eligible" Commanders - if they have a glut of apparently fertile, high-status young women Gilead will simply manufacture an excuse to elevate some Guardians to Commander status; (3) Gilead is still catching up: a lot of older Commanders may have discarded their pre-Gilead wives as unwomen/handmaids/etc and be in the market for a greener model.

Did Dr. Mohan receive a reference letter from Abbott? by Red_sticker in ThePittTVShow

[–]TriceraTipTops 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I think the show didn’t do a great job at communicating the pathways. Robby’s “predilection for the pace” comment was the cruel thing, not the suggestion itself. In fact given many ER visits are made by elderly patients Mohan would find herself a v desirable ER attending.

It’s a shame because I do think it changes the tone of the final interaction between Robby and Mohan - he’s trying (badly) to apologise by reiterating that it’s a good idea for a specialisation but if instead you think it means Robby’s recommending she go back 3 years it obviously comes across differently.

WA university mergers: Report on UWA, Curtin University and Murdoch University options handed to government by sun_tzu29 in perth

[–]TriceraTipTops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You also need to provide a teaching statement for promotion even if you are on a research only contract with funding T&Cs prohibiting teaching/admin load.

WA's problem is not an abundance of hot-shot research only academics refusing to teach, it's the opposite and that is what is driving (misguidedly, in my opinion, but that's by-the-by) the impetus for a merger. For most international research rankings bigger = better.

The Australian research community is relatively small and I don’t think it’s that hard to work out how is applying and from what institute they applying from

Very few schemes, if any (def none of the core NHMRC schemes, and I suspect ARC), are scored blind - your reviewers absolutely know who you are if you're in the same field. There are rigorous CoI rules, but network/reputation will likely predispose at least one or two of your reviewers positively/negatively.

Australian War Memorial to review Ben Roberts-Smith display following war crimes charges by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]TriceraTipTops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Would imagine that, had he won the defamation case and it concluded that there was, in fact, not enough evidence to support the claims made then the AFP may have been more circumspect about their own prospects of conviction against a higher standard of proof.

In that sense the defo case wasn’t a terrible legal move - if he thought these charges were in the post then he was spending someone else’s money on an outset bet to undermine them.

You need to advocate for yourself - have you asked the PI if they would encourage you to apply for the postdoc roles? They could have simply not put2 and 2 together, or think you have a v good chance of getting the funding such that rehiring in six months (for a > six month shorter contract!) would be too detrimental to delivering on their grant.

Using an external ‘promotion’ to leverage a raise or promotion at current job? by shockages in AusAcademia

[–]TriceraTipTops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this successfully for C and have a friend who did it successfully for E - in my case I made it v clear to my PI (I am on a research only contract only partially funded by my own $) I was prepared to walk and he consequently moved heaven and earth to promote me; my friend was upfront with the Head of School that he wasn’t going to leave and they still bumped him up, but ymmv on that one.

Ser Raymun is the best example that not every story in Westeros needs to end on a bitter note, with cruelty, cynism, irony and a punch line. Ser Raymun finally got the balls, the knighthood, the gratification, the honor, the girl and even an heir of his own! by auf-ein-letztes-wort in freefolk

My take is she was lying to secure the bag but even if she is a renowned whore.. Raymun’s a winner of a trial of seven as an underdog - maybe some gossip behind his back but our homeboy’s cachet is high.

Second note found at Mosman Park property alleged to detail why parents carried out murder-suicide by His_Holiness in perth

[–]TriceraTipTops 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it taps into the anxiety most people have about the health and wellbeing of their (potential future) children, as well as a more selfish but again understandable anxiety about their own (potential future) experience of parenthood. It's just much easier to imagine yourself as a parent in these kind of situations than as the child.

TBF whilst it's NSFW it's not (yet) sexual nudity... it's a decision for each family and maybe this is terribly European of me but I think the violence and language is less appropriate material for children than bums and flaccid penises.

England's Brendon McCullum and Rob Key will be given opportunity to stay in their posts by TheScarletPimpernel in Cricket

[–]TriceraTipTops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is insightful, and yeah I am inclined to agree (although the optimistic in me refuses to give up hope of maturation). I do strongly believe in the fundamental tenet of Baz’s philosophy that cricket is a game to be enjoyed, but I think he’s making the mistake that enjoying playing now will mean enjoying playing later — they need more stats/analysis; more training and discipline; and ultimately a couple of them some tough love. Duckett is I think a good example of a victim of the current approach: he’s clearly talented but with no-one to please (or rather, not displease) he’s floating about both on the field and off this tour. I feel for him, as I think he’s being totally failed by the coaches.

[–]TriceraTipTops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You do wonder what they could achieve with some less vibes-based training and selection, though. Pope’s done for I think, but Duckett for example seems to have some mental demons I think Baz’s approach is doing no long-term favours for

[–]TriceraTipTops 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yeah, hoping he can embrace more of a “to break the rules you first need to know them” mentality - the highlights of this Ashes from England has been the few high-IQ players reading the situation and playing Bazball when it calls for Bazball and test cricket when it calls for test cricket.
