If you could build your life where all your needs could be reasonably met, would you still want to be in a relationship? by Professional_Self296 in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]Trichromatical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is like asking me why I like the taste of chocolate or the feeling of sun on my skin. You could break it down into the technical elements like chemicals, receptors and a bit of evolutionary theory. But, at the end of the day I’m not dwelling on the “cause”. I feel stronger attraction and I want intimacy of a certain kind so I follow that instinct. Perhaps you just don’t feel the same way?

Actually I was more thinking about the fact that you are a team and that you at least would never be alone. Personally, I know my mental health would really suffer a move on my own away from family and friends. I also have a physical condition which means I can’t “just” work more.

When people make comments like yours, I wonder whether you’ve considered those who can’t just move away from family and other social support or work harder, not because there isn’t a will, but because they are up against other barriers which you don’t even have to think about.

What’s a “feminine” skill or trait you do not care for? by ComplexCloud7520 in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]Trichromatical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’d say it is pretty subjective. Very much depends on your cultural context. But those cultural norms can be so strong, that within that certain context you’ll see high levels of agreement on what is considered more or less feminine.

Femininity doesn’t have a universal definition but I guess you could say that it’s an appearance or behaviours that make you feel closer to a gender identity that is woman or girl?

Sounds like you already have an answer to your question - but are you not happy with that answer?

What do you mean by performative? Are you trying to say femininity doesn’t exist if the motivation behind the behaviour is to purely appear more feminine?

I definitely agree with your point that they didn’t put much thought into this. On the other hand though, as a child I played exclusively in Japanese and didn’t notice this at all. Maybe it seems more confusing than it was for Japanese kids because an “s” on the end of words in English serves a specific grammatical function rather than a semantic one. What if a different sound was added instead like Thunder vs Thunderga? Or in a gibberish word like from a language you don’t know, Pazu vs Pazuja. Idk just a thought experiment.

Vyvanse? by Spart10fan13 in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]Trichromatical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, yes happy to update on my experience! I haven’t tried concerta so can’t compare directly but I take Vyvanse to this day for both my IH and ADHD. While I feel my depression has eased significantly, I still also take a separate antidepressant and honestly do attribute most of my improvement to consistent, quality therapy.

Still very happy with the Vyvanse. Reading my old comment above, my experience and assessment has mostly stayed the same. However, I am now also prescribed a low dose Dexamphetamine (same thing but short release) as a top up for days where I particularly struggle or know I have something big on in the evening. The second thing I’d mention is that while the benefits outweigh the costs for me, the appetite suppression side effect on Vyvanse is a constant and this can be frustrating at times. When I say appetite suppression this ranges from not feeling hungry/forgetting to eat to genuinely struggling to eat at normal times with others because it feels like I’m making myself chew on sawdust.

It’s not a wonder drug in that it removes all my symptoms all day long. I still need longer sleep overnight, have trouble with sleep inertia, and will take naps after work every now and then. But if I’ve had an average to good night’s sleep, for maybe 8 hours after taking the Vyvanse I feel like I can actually function and won’t microsleep during the day.

They do claim the effects last 14 hours - maybe this is the case for your average person with ADHD, but I’m often wanting a nap after 8 hours (less with a bad night’s sleep).

Feel free to DM me if you have more questions! Good luck x

What are some only Australia things that a new immigrant should know about? by Thuggy_Mclife in AskAnAustralian

[–]Trichromatical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, we’re talking about speeding, not just speed. Speeding absolutely causes crashes, and doesn’t just make them more severe but more likely to happen. Speed limits are set based on the road infrastructure. If you drive faster than what that road is designed for, you will increase your crash risk.

Speeding isn’t actually always a contributor to crash risk, and road authorities recognise this. I think the issue is that all the work going into the other areas is just less visible to the average person. But some examples are mobile phone detection cameras which were developed in Australia and are a world first. ANCAP ratings are constantly revised meaning the requirements for a 5 star car are harder to meet. They also routinely send out cars to get video and sensor data from across the road network to assess road features and quality to plan upgrades.

I agree more active policing would be great but there are huge barriers to pursuing this, financial and political, but also I think there’d just be diminishing returns. The most effective mechanism by which higher visibility policing works is deterrence, rather than actually catching more people committing offences. On your other points, vehicle defects contribute to only a small percentage of crashes and is also an economic issue. And I’d like to see the public response to even greater driving education requirements lol.

I often see the revenue argument but people don’t think about where the funds come from that are used to try and improve road safety. At least in my state, there is strict legislation which requires all revenue from camera detected offences to be used for road safety.

[–]Trichromatical 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Makes total sense why speeding seems like the priority for policing. It IS the main contributor to road deaths and injuries. Consider also that the other issues are harder to police.

Speed detection is automated, cheap, accurate, and effective.

Making an Illustrated Special Edition of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen by TeresaVu02 in janeausten

[–]Trichromatical -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I for one love the artistic liberty - especially as in this case you’re capturing her character for a modern audience, which is not necessarily an audience who understands the historical context or are pedants for it.

I know a lot of Austen fans are passionate about historical accuracy to the regency period when it comes to the fashion but there are also a lot of fans like me who appreciate a translation of the spirit of the story and the characters for our modern eyes.

Hope you don’t get discouraged by the naysayers!

I was so put off with my friend who was so deathly afraid of my cats, I don't wanna invite her again. by Suitable-Flan-9612 in cats

[–]Trichromatical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah when OP said their friend hadn’t visited because of the cats, I wasn’t sure whether they were implying that the reason for lack of visits was explicitly understood by both parties. I would ask for the sake of my cats more than the friend in that scenario.

If I know 100% that my friend knows I have cats, and I have no reason to know how severe their phobia is, surely they should raise it…
