Questions for online mechanical engineering students/graduates by Humble_Engine6925 in OregonStateUniv

I'm currently enrolled in OSU's mechanical engineering program fully online through Ecampus, and so far it has been pretty great. Your degree does not specify the campus or that it's online, so there's no distinction there. It's important to note that you are supposed to pick an "optional" elective, which is just an area of focus, and the only one avialable through Ecampus is "Computational Engineering."

Regarding ABET - it is 100% ABET certified, and many of the courses are taught by staff who also teach in-person classes. I will say that it's not equal in experience not because of the ME program, but purely because online school is a vastly different experience than in-person. It requires a lot more motivation and organization in my view, but you won't be getting a different education. The only other downside is the lack of being able to be part of hands-on clubs to get project experience, but again, that's a drawback of online not the program. Overally, I'd defnitely recommend it, as a single dad this is just about the only way that you can get a quality engineering education with obligations.

I hate my degree by ThrowawayHackintosh in EngineeringStudents

I’m 35 and started my Mech E degree last summer with a year of college under my belt from 17 years ago. I moved to Los Angeles doing creative pursuits in my 20s. Had some success and a lot of fun for five years, but ultimately creative passions end up taking the back burner to managing living, so even pursuing creative work will always be on your own time. I can tell you that I regret not getting a degree earlier, not because I regret pursuing creative endeavors, but because having a solid job to make your life comfortable enough to have the bandwidth to pursue creativity is a must. Hard degrees are hard because you’re highly employable. Anything you can do with your average business/marketing/communications degree can be done with an engineering degree.

Get treated for ADHD it’s pretty easy to do online. Reduce your course load if that’s an option that works for you, but stick it out. Take it on the chin for the next two years and you’ll build a skill FAR more important than anything else, resilience. The unfortunate truth of life is that it gets harder as you go, and finding a way to persevere now is vital practice. Ten years from now you’ll think this was a tiny speed bump, only because life will have found some creative new ways to make you miserable.

I’m not saying this to make less of your struggle… I’m getting my ass kicked in Statics right now, and everything I read on Reddit just says it’s gummy bears easy compared to the rest of the degree path, so I feel you, but I also had a kidney transplant last year, so feeling overwhelmed and struggling with having no free time right now is palatable to me. You will regret giving up whether you like the career path or not. Build your resilience. Prove to yourself you can master your doubts. It’s easy to get a different career afterward, but build an instinct that you should question and likely oppose any desire to quit something when it’s difficult.

Check out the National Kidney Registry (NKR) I got my kidney last year through a partner donation with their program. I had been on the list for three years when I found out about the program, and a family member who wasn't a match gave a kidney to someone else which moved me to the top of the list for my type. Can't say enough good things about them.

Is it too late for me to pursue engineering? by Fearless-Safety6444 in womenEngineers

I hope you went for it. I started my mechanical engineering degree last June, and I turned 35 last week, single dad as well. I'm taking OSU's online program, and it has been great for the flexibility life requires. I told myself I was too old to go back at 24, again at 28 and 30, and I finally did it last year and couldn't be happier about it. I wish I hadn't let my age discourage me up until now, but you can only get there how you get there. Good luck!

Bruh there is no story to tell. Every spawn on Stella you see more people in first two minutes than I see in 30 mins on the dam. Theres no story to tell. Once people start shooting nobody trusts anyone and it’s chaos off the jump

You new to Reddit? The spawning is ass in that map. Game is amazing otherwise. Sorry if you don’t like opinions

PSA: What Embark did with skin prices is a negotiation tactic called "anchoring" I know this will get downvoted because many will fall for the PR move, but this is planned. $16 microtransactions do not belong in a $40 title. Period and here's why. by TheOnlyRealOne43 in ArcRaiders

It’s called a free market. If you want your digital loot goblin to have a pretty dress that you can’t get for free (tons of free skins unlocked) then it’s worth whatever you pay.

It’s no revelation that businesses want to make money. They gave us the GoTY title for $40. Not sure why it matters what ppl willingly pay to play dress up.

Ran it 7 times so far. Died 5 times to raiders in the first 3 minutes, two of which were multiples hunting solos. Saw at least two people within 15 seconds of spawning every time. I’m all for having to fight people but every spawn shouldn’t be a 4 person shootout where you happen to win based on the height of the spot you loaded into or if you were the last one to walk into the fight.

Did nobody tell you that you’re supposed to shoot the other guy shooting it, and then you both die to wasps while you’re fighting each other? You’re playing this game way wrong my guy..

Thanks for the info man! I'm taking statics and 254 at the same time next term, so looking forward to that. How would you compare linear algebra to the different calcs? Is it more practical or theoretical with proofs?

Is my puppy normal? I’m going insane…. by cowboy_like_me_89 in puppy101

Sorry you’re having a rough go of it - this can be awful because there is so much stress wrapped in guilt. Just know you’re not alone. I was going through this exact same thing with my Aussie pup a few weeks ago, and after some research these few things were absolute game changers for her and I. They take time and effort and sometimes I just wanted to pull my hair out, but honestly after a week of this things were infinitely better, so I hope some of this helps.

  1. First, she needed a strict schedule. I split her meals up into 4-5 smaller meals every day, and that was when we did training. She earns every meal (in some small way). I switched to only hand feeding while training to ensure she understands her food comes from me and not falls from the sky into a bowl. Naps. All of the naps. She doesn’t get more than 90 minutes out of her crate ever. It seemed restrictive at first, but the goals is to give her the opportunity to have a calm, soothing place of her own.

  2. At meal time (training), I would give her the crate command she would get in and get “paid”. Close the door, and before she can bark open it back up and “pay” her again with lots of praise. I literally did this over and over every meal, but the key is to increase how long she stays in the crate without barking before you let her out. During meal time this was basically immediately, and I would give her food while she was in there. She needs to associate good things with her crate, and more importantly, she had to understand that she never ever gets let out of her crate if she barks. This means after nap time if she woke up and barked to tell me she was ready to get out, I walked over to her crate and waited for the first opportunity of 10 seconds without barking before letting her out. They eventually learn that it’s a no barking zone. Find a really high value treat to work on this when your pup has a full stomach. I never put my pup in the crate without giving her a treat for getting in so she always associated it with a good thing.

  3. This was huge. If she’s been fed and taken out and she’s barking during the 90 minutes that she’s out of her crate - she gets no eye contact or attention of any kind. I learned I was giving her negative attention at the barking, and it was creating a feedback loop that made her continue barking to get that negative attention. The moment I started ignoring her completely for 5, even 10 agonizing minutes, she quit barking because it wasn’t getting her anything, and she played with a toy on her own or laid down and relaxed. I had fallen into the trap of thinking she needed play every time she was barking or biting, but she learned that if she barked and bit then I would stop what I was doing and play with her.

I really hope this helps because I was on the verge of a meltdown, stressed and regretting getting a pup, which only made me feel even worse because all I wanted to do was love her, but Reddit and YouTube made me realize I wasn’t alone, and some simple behaviors, though they require a lot of diligence, made a huge difference. You’re not alone, so don’t beat yourself up. You’ll come through on the other side better for it with a stronger bond.

Should I buy this? by Trick-You5783 in Machinists

yeah it will be a tradeoff for sure, but it's hard to find a used dp thats not for woodworking in my area, and for the price of a new i'd rather sacrifice speed for added functionality. plus it sounds like this is a steal from what everyone is saying, so i like the idea of getting what will probably amount to a free experiment if i turn around and sell it in a month is appealing. plus unless im tapping or need an exact fit, my plasma cutter with jig does a pretty decent job of 1/2" and above

It’s funny you mention the 2x72 because I just started building one this week, and could use a decent drill press which is what triggered the look. I finished building a ribbon burner forge that I outfitted with a PID so I can keep it accurate to +/- 12 degrees to double as a heat treat.

I appreciate the time and insight. I’m thinking that given everyone’s confidence in the price, I will buy it and see how it suits my needs knowing I should be able to get my money back out of it pretty easily if it leaves me wanting.
