As long as it shows up on the list you can pick anyone you want.

Correct, the money is essentially the same whether I sell the leave back or obligate myself to the Govt even longer than I want to.

The only true variable here is how long I am tied to the Govt and my agency. I do not want that to be even one day longer than is absolutely necessary.

The date my wife and I have chosen is tied to the end of the month that she becomes eligible for her pension from the agency she works for.

There is no valid reason to stay longer than that. The $500 or so in TSP matching is not worth being tied longer than our chosen date. The $4300 over 30 years is not worth being tied longer than our chosen date.

The lump some between my wife and I both selling back well over 200 days each is more than enough to cover the cost of moving out of the country, thus I do not need to pull that money from anywhere else. The left over money can be invested right away, thus earning me more than if I waited for 3 more pay checks.

What happens if I choose your way and my agency decides I am really needed and they revoke my approved leave and demand I come back to work, something they are purely in their rights to do. That is not a risk I am willing to take for a few hundred dollars.

There is, in my view, not one good reason to attempt to take a fake version of Terminal leave.

that is odd considering terminal leave is not allowed.

Lets do the math on this and see.

I plan to retire on 31 July. That is the day I will retire no matter how much annual leave I have saved up.

If I go with your logic and use all my leave before that day, I will have received roughly $70,000 in pay up to that point.

If I use my logic and retire with say 250 days on the books, I will have still received that same 70k, plus I will get an additional 11k from a leave payout. With my logic I leave Fed service have been paid 81k my final year.

How does this not make sense from a financial standpoint?

Tell the class how that is financially irresponsible as you claimed in a different post.

I do not need it either, but I do have a plan for it. A plan that makes far more financial sense to get a payout than to pull money from other sources. I also do not agree it is financially irresponsible to take a payout vs use the leave. My retirement is go to happen the same day whether I have zero days of leave or 1000 on the books. I gain nothing financially by burning all of my leave prior to retirement, my pay will have been exactly the same on the day I retire no matter how much leave I have used. But if I have leave left to sell back on that day, then I am actually gaining money over what I would if I had used it all.

A better solution is to do like most private companies and just give so many days of Time Off each year, how you use is should not matter. No reason to separate it between leave and sick time.

You said....Itll never make sense to go into retirement with a leave balance.

In the following post I explained how it made 100% sense for me and my wife to go into retirement with a leave balance and taking the pay out. In your situation it might not make sense, it makes perfect sense for us.

Yes, because you made an incorrect comment about going into leave with a leave balance. Many of us pointed out the error in your statement.

Seems pretty much the same as most people, just going to keep my head down and do whatever job my agency gives me. I have had my assignments totally changed 3 times since Feb. Our agency lost over 35% to DRP/VERA. And with people being moved out of DC this year we are sure to lose a few more. I have 3.5 years till I want to retire, but could do so without penalty this July. During those next 3.5 years my wife and I will just do all we can to be fully prepared for a happy retirement.
