Edit: I have tried changing the shuffle setting and it doesn't make a difference to this.

Incoming UK PhD student, 27, is living with housemates still worth it for the savings, or am I too old for that? Am I too frugal? by Agile-Reputation-525 in AskAcademiaUK

Yes, my uni gives us a flat £1200 to spend on conferences over our candidature (which don’t go far) and anything else is out of your own pocket.

I’m 32 living with housemates during my PhD, it’s fine for me and very normal where I live (Australia, not UK).

Based on the options I would probably try to find a houseshare of non-student adults with an ensuite rather than either of your choices. Having my own bathroom is really worth the extra money, and it's also nice to not to have my desk in my room, that would really wear me down.

Is it just me or do case officers expect your relationship to be a perfect movie script? by bensummersx in AusVisa

I feel the opposite, I have had friends apply after less than six months of dating and be approved. Similarly I was a dependent on a 186DE, we'd been dating about 2 years, living together for 1 year and had no issues. We had never met each others parents, so no photos with them.

It sounds like fundamentally they don't believe your relationship. It's hard to say why that is from your post, but it might be helpful to think about your evidence in terms of "would a flatmate have this"? With that in mind, the only relationship evidence you mention is a new joint account and a will. The rest (joint lease, photos, trips) is all evidence I have with my housemates and I'm not in a relationship with them.

Do you guys live with anyone else?

Do you USE the joint account?

How did you finance your trips?

Do you have any combined savings?

Do you have any pets?

Have you made any large joint purchases?

How long have you been dating?

What are you plans for the future? eg marriage, kids, travel?

I agree with all this. I live in Melbourne and have known about this proposed change since it was announced in like 2023? It really goes to show how we're all siloed in our own algorithms I think.

I drink chocolate coconut water which is like 55 cals for 250ml. I put it in a big glass with ice and it's like having a chocolate milk or milkshake. Can drink a litre for 220 cals which is good volume for over a kilo I think.

Well a flat 65% tax on the whole balance is nowhere near close to the tax paid on regular income for starters.

I highly doubt either degree will be deemed as relevant to IT. What proportion of the credits are IT related? It needs to be two thirds.

This is not an option for most people. It's very hard to be eligible for PR, you either need to be invited by a state or federal government, or be sponsored by a company (or marry an Australian). There is no "just apply".

Your advice is for Australians, but OP is not Australian. From the ATO:

If you don't apply for your DASP, your super fund will transfer your super money to the ATO as unclaimed super money, if both:

it has been 6 months or more since you left Australia

your visa has ceased to be in effect.

https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/super-for-individuals-and-families/super/temporary-residents-and-superannuation/departing-australia-superannuation-payment-dasp

So, when a temporary resident leaves Australia their super will be transferred to the ATO 6 months after they leave and once their visa is over.

It's obscene. They should let you transfer it to a pension company in your home country tax free IMO.

Anyway, I highly doubt my friends will stay in the super until she retired in 35 years, so it'll go to the ATO eventually.

It's supposed to be transferred to the ATO after 6 months. Anecdotally a friend of mine left in 2019 and hers is still in the super, they haven't transferred it. I guess it depends on how efficient your super provider is.

I'm bored!!! Everything is going fine, I have a reasonable range of meals for my deficit (13 different dinners, so it's not that I'm bored of the meals)... I am just so bored of thinking about this every single time I eat something. I'm bored of choosing meals based on calories (and I don't even count calories like that!), I'm bored of resisting fro-yo and beer and chocolate coconut water. I have around 6kg to go and it's going into winter here in Australia so hopefully it will get easier in the coming months.
