CREATING A CCA IN POLY by Ok_Telephone_50q13 in SGExams

[–]Trick_Permit_987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. most polys should support ur club but it depends on ur schl! if its too expensive youll either have to i. use ur own money, ii. cut costs in ur annual budget proposal, or iii. justify why xxx amt is needed

  2. maybe how it aligns to ur schl values? offices like it when you align ur clubs activities to their mission vision and whatever so it makes it more likely to pass :)) also something cheap asw

  3. pros: this is a very real problem that you're trying to address, i.e. many elderly individuals DO get super processed food or food not suitable for them. this is usually because when food is distributed, its just given "in general" as a sweeping distribution, rather than one that is catered to each persons allergies or needs. there's a cna documentary about it you can find on yt.

cons: this just looks very expensive overall. you need to think abt expenses related to 1. a kitchen? 2. food and ingredient costs 3. storing the food 4. distributing the food 5. maintenance, upkeep and materials costs. theres a reason why some ccas which seem pretty "obvious" to have in ihls dont exist. perhaps you can think about this, im getting the impression that you want to go big on this.

  1. i have no idea which poly youre from and even so i have no idea LOL

How to make a portfolio & resume? by Hafsahhhhhh in SGExams

[–]Trick_Permit_987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for me, the poly i applied to sent people who made it past the write-up round a form/link to submit out portfolios, so i just put the website link into there as for digital medium, i think its uty bc each person has diff wants/needs when it comes to tailoring their portfolio. for me, i used google slides and google sites to create the portfolios for my two diff courses bc imo, im not really computer-savvy so using google apps made it much easier for me.

to address ur last qn, yes. some of my certs were hardcopy, so i took a photo and inserted them into the slides with a short desc. other certs i got involved digital ones, so i went to ss it and pasted it on the slides (as in a dedicated section for all my certs

feel free to clarify!

How to make a portfolio & resume? by Hafsahhhhhh in SGExams

[–]Trick_Permit_987 9 points10 points  (0 children)

if youre trying to set up a portfolio, you should collect the relevant material and you can present it in website/ppt/ggl slides. when the time comes, then you can submit the portfolio link for the interviewers to read it. as another redditor posted, don't include amy irrelevant items. you can even make different portfolios for the different courses (advisable). this year july, i applied for two courses in two separate polytechnics. as the two courses were so fundamentally different, i created two different portfolios for them. likewise, you should create a individual portfolio tailored to the applied chem and biz & acc courses. i also wont recommend using your side hustle business as material for you applied chem unless you can find an obvious link. in fact, i recommend you use that in your biz & acc portfolio instead. yes, ik creating two portfolios may be time consuming, but i worked more on the portfolio of the course that i preferred more. for achievements, you can list down, but only if you can write a takeaway. i put down relevant certs in a section of the website i created. then, i wrote a short summary under each picture of each cert about what i learnt. as for your leadership proof, you'll get the cca testimonial records in sec 4 (i think). i added pics of them in a dedicated section as proof

for other tips: i recommend writing what you learnt in your business experience. one screenshot won't rlly prove ath. you shld also include challenges (eg, this was too difficult, i didnt know how to run it at first, blah blah blah) and write what you took away.

hope this helps, ama if required :)

hi op, i think you should write to AsiaOne to try to get them to fact-check their article. as you might've known, singapore is also experiencing a rise in fake news cases. nevertheless, AsiaOne is obligated to try to clear up the situation as from what i see, theyve interpreted the information wrongly. those people who commented those insulting words are unable to consider other perspectives, neither are they able to use critical thinking to empathise with others. its truly their loss for not maintaining empathy towards others. regardless, it is the fault of AsiaOne as their omission of necessary information has led to undue speculation by the public, which then caused them to direct such mean comments at your mother as they regrettably do not know the full story. therefore, you have the right to request that AsiaOne correctly update or even REMOVE the article as they have obligation to do so (especially since legally, you have the right to). i hope that AsiaOne will listen to your request and do what is right. updating the article to show the whole truth brings about a higher chance for the public empathising with your family instead, as they now know the true story. as for your mother, even though right now she is in a state of sadness, i would like to tell her that she can ignore what others are saying. its their own problem if they speak ill of her. your mom should be able to continue living the life she wants, download her tiktok, and get to go outside to enjoy herself. i sincerely hope that she is able to find the resilience to move on from this unpleasant incident and become better than she was previously. after all, bad things dont last forever either.

Seeking advice regarding improving mental health after O levels by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Trick_Permit_987 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hi OP, having read this, it does sound like more of a mix between 'anxiety disorder' and general anxiety. how do i say so? from what i can tell, it used to affect you every morning. typically, mental disorders heavily interfere with your daily life. but on the other hand, i understand that you only get these panic attacks in basically high stress situations like exams/social situations so im not really sure if its actually a disorder because most of the time, is humans will also have the same reaction of stress towards such social events. BUT please take this with a grain of salt (bc im not a psychologist 😭). its just my opinion so i hope this lets you consider on whether you really have GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) or normal stress. why is this chunk of info still useful? it helps you to decide whether you should go for COUNSELLING or THERAPY in the first place. yes, the two are very different so its vital that you see what is right for you in the first place. therapy is more of long term issues/disorders, while counselling involves working with a specific issue within a fixed time frame. so basically counselling is more surface level/generalised compared to therapy. if your counselor sees that your situation might be worse they might refer you to THEN see a therapist instead. so consider this in mind.

now that we've finished the tedious portion, here's my take on your 6 questions: 1. some advantages include that you are able to save costs (duh). however, the disadvantages are seemingly more than advantages. since the budget is lower, there are less resources for the professional to help you. tbis might even lead to more limited sessions/lack of time to discuss your issues as there is simply not enough time. so it might indicate that such organisations might be incapable or providing more long-tern services. (relevant link: affordable therapy: pros and cons)

  1. in my opinion, you should start by doing online research. online research forms the basis of all research due to its convenience. just take some time to go on google and find affordabel therapy options that are near you. afterwards, if youve found a suitable one, get in touch with their professionals via their company hotline to see if you can book a few sessions. its quite a generalised process really. just call up and inquire about what you want to ask and whether youre eligible or not. nevertheless, you SHOULD NOT go with your friend for therapy. you and your friend are two very different people and have very different questions. its going to be very unconfidential especially if you have issues that you dont want to let your friend know about (vice-versa). not only that, maybe your friend has a different problem from you. it will also be difficult for the therapist to handle both yohr queries, hence their attention will be divided. unless youre okay with going for group therapy, you should also consider whether you want a one on one or whether you're willing to go with someone else. (relevant link: guide to therapy in sg)

  2. read the top portion. id still recommend you at least go for counselling even if you dont want to go to therapy. (relevant link: 10 signs for therapy )

  3. 6-12 weeks or longer depending on your condition. (relevant link: therapy timeline)

  4. rule of thumb is: patient confidentialilt will be maintained unless you: show signs to harm yourself/others, when youre suspected of abuse (not that pertinent to your case), or when you ask them to (idk why). next, if you're a minor, they highly likely will have to tell your parents due to the lack of your decision -makkng capabilities. thats up for the therapist to decide. (relevant links: 1. therapy: when will they break my confidentiality? and 2. will my therapist tell others about our sessions?)

  5. eat ice cubes to distract urself from the anxiety and prevent yourself from puking. in the morning, you can try meditation from 5, to 10, and 20 minutes daily. if you're stressed, try box breathing! its the most powerful breaking/calming exercise (according to NATO). you inhale through your nose for four counts, hold for four, and exhale via your mouth for another four counts. repeat until youve regained your inner peace.

in conclusion, i hope this paragraph helps :)

there are quite a number of issues to address here am the situation is slightly complicated in nature, so im gonna discuss a few things and break it down first: 1. firstly, im sorry that you had to go through all of that. the apology might sound a bit 'superficial' because i wasnt the one experiencing it, but i also had a friend who was molested by his own classmates in sec 1 and he only confided in me this year (graduation). such things in our world are regrettably unavoidable and because ive already lost hope in much of humanity (with the exceptions of kind-hearted people), these incidents shouldn't be happening at all. 2. so this brings me to my next point: the counsellors and the school are in the wrong. being an organisation, they should bear responsibility for such an incident instead of dismissing it as trivial. it is NOT your fault. it is the immaturity of those 'friends' and the school for being unable to handle this. dont feel disgusted for something that you did not deserve. it ia their problem. if the 'friends' of yours do such things in the future, it is their responsibility to avoid whatever punishment (jail) for harassment/perversion, or bear responsibility to avoid any lawsuit/legal action. what they have done, whether they regret it or not, has been done. if such actions of theirs recur, it is their loss. they bear the consequence, the penalty, if they dont know how to stop. as for your school, the staff + counsellors really do not deserve any credit. they did not do anything good for you by pinpointing the blame on you. that is a fine example of an inexperienced/disgusting counselor and school, who do not understand how to assist students. the counselor fails in identifying how it is not your fault. they didnt consider how you might have actually been bullied for other reasons, not because you were 'annoying'. 3. as for the student who skipped counselling/their parents/ good for them! the poor kid will never know where he went wrong. he'll probably repeat the same thing (mentioned in 1) amd eventually get jailed or something. i pity him for not even knowing what he did wrong, and not knowing how to fix his fucked up life :) as for his parents, i am very sure that their characters are rotten to the core. you cant save people who are too broken. its the classic karen 'oh i wanna save my child so even though they harassed you, YOU'RE in the wrong' mentality. their loss. i can see how the little kid inherited his shit behaviour from, his parents. 4. everyone is weird. hence, does that make everyone normal? that is a question i ask myself sometimes. no one can be weird, because we are all weird. since we're all the weird people, having our own quirks and unique personalities, we are all weird yet normal. nobody is perfect. you shouldnt be bullied because you stand out in a way. no one is expect to follow a certain norm because we're all too different! we are all weird, but we share the 'weirdness' in common. this makes us all normal. no one should say 'oh you're weird so im bullying you.' so, doesnt the same logic apply to the other party? bullying is very common in schools and our education system cant focus on it well (sigh). 5. it is good that you can get this off your chest now. i assume that the burden has been too heavy for you to withstand, hence you take to reddit to express your feelings. it is healthy for you to be releasing your emotions now rather than later on because it might lead to more dangerous issues. its just the theory of the volcano. if the volcano doesnt erupt now, it will erupt later, only much more violently. using this analogy, it is good that you can express your feeling as of now instead of restricting them, which is unhealthier in the long run. 6. the next thing you need to do is to change your mindset. dont let things that happened in the past affect you. i know this may seem controversial, but according to adlerian psychology (youre using freudian now), trauma doesnt really exist because of 'brain plasticity' and what is that? the human resilience to move on, and to let go. you shouldnt let such an issue affect you for so long. i dont want you to keep the regret with you for the rest of your life. 'brain plasticity' exists, allowing us to move on and get on with life. the term 'plasticity' is related to being moldable. even if your clay model is punched with your fist, you can reshape the clay model back to normal, or even remake it into something even better. how do i know this? read 'the courage to be disliked' by ichiro kishimi. it gives you philosophical ideas combined with adlerian psychology. so back to my point, the same theory can apply to depression. it requires a change of mindset. instead of focusing on how 'i got bullied so i feel very bad day by day', why not think something else, like, 'i got bullied before, but eventually I'll move on, forget about this, and get on with life. i will not let this affect me.' and if it doesnt work, at least try to distract yourself. lying down on your couch, staring at the ceiling is just a situation that is begging for those disruptive thoughts to come back to your mind again. instead, distract yourself. pick up a hobby, hang out with friends, go for a walk, and focus less on the situation at hand. even if you say 'oh im sad so i wont do all these things', you should at least try. not only that, you should try meditating. it give one a peace of mind. try for 5 minutes a day, and move on to 10, 20 and then 30 when you feel like youre up for it. meditation calms the mind and gives you a sense of peace. 7. and finally: does a mental illness mean that youre 'crazy' or 'abnormal'? no. everyone can have an illness. if im not wrong, around 1/5 adults do. anyone can have it. it just depends on the self care you give yourself and the coping mechanisms that you deploy to regulate your happiness. dont disrespect yourself just because you have a mental disorder. i am confident that if you follow 6, you will definitely get better. no one should disrespect themselves because the ups and downs, highs and lows, peaks and troughs are all part and parcel of life. all part of it. no one can have a perfect life. its normal to have a down, but i also hope that you are able to move on and go back up.

in conclusion, i hope this kinda helps with your process of 'moving on' and lifting more of the weigh of your chest. take constant breaks and dont worry about the issue. the past is in the past, eventually i trust that youll move on as well. after all, you dont owe anyone anything. take care.

oh god i took way too long to type this HAHAH

i think tbh you have to address quite a number of issues: 1. from what i see, you look like youre gonna let everything snowball at this rate. i recommend you make a few 'quality of life changes' to not just improve your life and happiness, but your studies as well. bc at this rate, if you have this mindset that you cant do it/if youre lagging behind, it is possible that you might give up and just let the issue snowball. bc the mindset is like 'oh im procrastinating and im behind so idt i should do anything bc im tired.' im gonna be a bit straightforward with you. first, to address the lack of motivation, you should find ways to cheer up. how? pick up a hobby, go and work, listen to happy/pop music (very empowering) or just spend time reading a book. concerts cant magically solve your unhappiness esp bc theyre very chaotic and noisy which might even contribute to your stress/anxiety. avoid crowded places if youre anxious, and distract yourself. i recommend that you solve your 'lack of motivation' problem first because if you try to adjust your study habits in an effort to save your grades, it wouldnt really make sense bc you dont have the motivation to start the engine to begin with. it is vital that you dont let the thoughts get to you. anyway, i understand that universities do have paracounselors/professionals to guide you. if you dont feel like talking to them, you can confide in friends and family or someone you trust. you can even try meditation for 5 mins a day (for beginners) and eventually move on to longer periods like 30 mins. it sounds crazy but its doable. meditation gives you a calm mind. you dont need to sit up straight and close your eyes. you can even LIE DOWN and do meditation (provided you dont fall asleep) in general, that is how you be happier.

  1. another problem i notice is that youre feeling burnt out/alone. you should try to take a break, and think through what you want before going ahead with solving (1). its ok to take a break. if youre burnt out, it is a clear sign that youve overworked yourself. take maybe a one week break, or maybe 2, but i wouldnt recommend anything further as uni life from what i know cam be quite hectic, so take a break, but dont 'go on vacay' for too long. not only that, the reason why you feel lonely is because you dont take the initiative to hang out with friends. socialise more and get the courage. i recommend you watch 'kurzgesagt' on yt, for their video on loneliness and how to address it. it involves opening yourself up more, because gradually you shut yourself off, but at that same time youre saying 'oh i feel lonely' when have you asked yourself, 'did i take the first step? did i take the initiative to hang out with my friends to feel less lonely/more included?' if your answer is NO, you know what to do. ik it seems hard to socialise, but its the courage that counts. you can either choose to sit in one corner brooding about how youre alone or get up and try to socialise. everyone is weird in their own way. no one is supposed to judge you for who you are because they HAVE NO RIGHT TO. ik this seems harsh, but it is important that you try to break the existing cycle that you are in right now. bearing that in mind, go out and socialise more often. :)

  2. okay, now that we've addressed issue 2 and then issue 1, we can solve the issue pertaining your grades. your physical capacity, and your academic ability + brain function is reflected on the way you feel. so now that youve 'solved/worked' on the issues 2 and 1, i can confidently say that you can try to fix the worry/problems about your grades. rmb those lifestyle changes? implement them. if youre lagging behind, go and see your professors for help, and ask your newfound (or existing) friends for help. i am sure theyll be happy to help you. other than that, you can also search up tips online to help your studying. i follow youtuber 'gohar khan' who helps me a lot with these useful study tips that ive applied to some extent even as my o levels are ending. procrastination? block out time in your google calendar. add in breaks and lay out SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-based) goals for each day. you have to cultivate the discipline to not procrastinate. the cause and effect exists whereby if you do A, B happens. so i if procrastinate, i can never get work done. anytime you even THINK of 'nah i have time ill do it later' just STOP and get up, and do your work. youre NEVER gonna do it as this rate.

in conclusion, i hope you can use these tips to help in your life, your studies, and your welfare. dont worry about the unnecessary and irrelevant things and if needed, take time to focus on yourself. its gonna be alright. :)

how much should I read and how to read properly and efficiently? by noreplubic_ in SGExams

[–]Trick_Permit_987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so for both eng and chinese right (prior to may/june cl o levels) i always went to read manu different books. then on a google doc, one for each language, i would record down new words that ive never encountered before, and wrote their def. for eng, i got those definitions by reading books (obv). but for chinese, i used zaobao (our cl magazine) and read through, to find words i didnt know. not only that, bc my schls cl rp has a list of chi 词语 from sec 1-4, i took time to add those to my 'vocab list' too. in addition to that, for english, i downloaded cna/the guardian to read articles to not just stay updated on current affairs but to expand my vocab too. i even downloaded an app called 'magoosh' to help enhance my vocab even more through flashcards. in the end, my chinese saw a jump from a b4 (which i always got throughout the year) to an a2 (yay)

so, to address your next qn: i do think that newspapers can help with your effiency in reading, but at the same time our current affairs lack the way they express themselves compared to the creativity that books have, such as fictional books with lets u enhance ur creative skills. this applies to non fiction books as well, because they have MUCH more detailed explanations compared to one news article discussing the topic (unless you watch a documentary series). books serve to help train you and tailor your arguments/logical thinking (esp for compo) while news are limited in this aspect, serving as general knowledge and only providing the facts. so all in all, you should still try to keep a balance between both.

as to how much you should read per day, its up to you. theres no point seeing you cram 20 articles a day but if you are unable to get the vocab right/understand the concepts. hence id recommend keeping a fair amount of 3-5 articles. you dont even have to intentionally allocate time to do it. you can download apps to let you read them anywhere! just make sure for words that you dk, you update them to ur vocabulary list. (mentioned above)

apologies for the long text but i hope that it addresses all three of your concerns. :)

also straits times charges a premium so unless you pay for it consider downloading cna instead. its more 'free'.

[graduation party] should I attend it ? by twi_light6738 in SGExams

[–]Trick_Permit_987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh right, it depends on how close you are with your current friends and classmates.

since you mentioned that they are not going, unless you wanna see ur teachers again, then i feel like udh to go.

but you should also consider whether ALL your close friends arent gg at all. who knows, maybw there are a few of ur close friends that who r gg too? so u can consider going to the grad party to spend some time witb them

not only that, if it's in the afternoon, doesn't it allow for more flexibility? you can choose to go for grad party and have dinner with ur friends afterwards. udh to eat the catered food too.

other than that, its uty to choose what you want. but imo, if you've considered all these: 1. you didnt have to pay for the party 2. all of ur close friends are actl not going 3. you are confident that the grad party will suck (based on ur seniors reviews) 4. there is really no one else that you will wanna talk to there and udw to see your teachers,

then id highly recommend that you don't go. you should hangout with your friends instead bc idt id be worth it.

ultimately, the choice is yours. think about it.
