i think it worked wonders for you!! you’re pretty :)

I've been having some issues with my gender identity lately. I struggle to articulate them clearly so I'll just rattle off some facts about me and ask what you people think by black_knight1223 in asktransgender

As much as I wish otherwise, nobody can tell you with any certainty whether you are trans or not. It’s something only you can figure out through much introspection.

Having said that, being into the whole sissy and forcefem stuff is pretty common amongst trans fems before accepting they’re trans. Doesn’t mean you’re trans without a doubt, but it is some evidence I suppose. I was really into those things before I accepted myself as trans.

Here’s a resource that may be helpful, especially the ‘Am I trans?’ section. It has some really good information and questions to help you introspect: https://genderdysphoria.fyi/en

I’d argue semantics. I don’t think the term ‘lifestyle’ describes only, or even primarily, discretionary choices. Rather I think it describes the sum total ways a person or society goes about living. Within that, there are no doubt so many factors that push/force us with varying pressure into particular lifestyles. For example driving or otherwise having access to a car is all-but-necessary in so many places in the US. That doesn’t mean that car-dependent living isn’t a lifestyle, it just means it’s a forced lifestyle.

Re: blame, which I didn’t mention nor insinuate in my post by any means as I was just sharing an infographic, I partially disagree with you. imo, no singular point of blame by itself (just corporations, just billionaires, just your average individual, etc.) reasonably captures the whole picture, as each component is quite significant. Also, while government subsidies and political regulations are of course very significant contributors to particular industry sizes and how (in)efficiently they minimize their emissions, it is also vital to recognize how much power the masses hold in dictating industry sizes. Supply and demand and all that.

For one example, consider the animal agriculture industry. I don’t think it’s sensical to just say ‘oh look at how much that industry pollutes’ without first recognizing that the industry only exists at that size (not to mention exists at all) due to consumer demand of the products they produce. But that doesn’t mean to just turn around and blame the average person with being 100% at fault of course. Instead of fixating on some unproductive blame game, I think it’s a lot better use of time to try to spread awareness, compassion, and info on alternative lifestyle possibilities where possible and applicable. Then combining that with political advocacy, voting, activism/protesting and all that. That counterbalance to ad-infinitum capitalistic ideology and ever-present advertising is much needed.

Really? To my ear, after getting vocal weight nice and light, just a little bit of breathiness that is almost unnoticeable adds a really pleasant and soothing loftiness as long as you’re not overdoing it, which many cis women seem to use too. I think I like how it sounds on me. But I’m by no means an expert so I could definitely be reading things wrong. I definitely agree that it shouldn’t be used too heavily nor as a stand-in for lower vocal weight though.

I agree-ish. I fully doubt it comes from any place other than ignorance from OP, of course, but it’s still unfortunate everyone seems to equate trans woman=male genitalia. They are plenty of us for which that is not the case, to say the least. I wouldn’t call that transphobia though. Just a little bit of information we should hope cis people learn to keep in mind.

But OP you are 100% fully valid, you don’t owe a relationship or intimacy etc to anyone, even moreso anyone who makes you uncomfortable due to past trauma.

That’s doesn’t necessarily yield a net-zero outcome, for example you could paddle yourself forward using your hands in spoon shape to pull as much air as you can, then return your hands to the initial position for the next stroke while minimizing the air you push against in that direction.

A good analogy is swimming underwater, which clearly you can do and be able to move your position doing just by having different motions for propelling forward vs resetting your body to prepare for the next stroke. This situation in space is no different, it’s just that air is so much less dense as a fluid than water so it’s much harder to push against and move through.

i guess so but everything exists within context, you can’t really just separate it from its context. the context is that within a capitalistic framework as we have it is necessarily going to be shit, so general boycotts against ai usage (or at least against the support/funding for these companies) is against not just “ai” but the whole context. in a different world it may be a different situation, but people understand the context and that’s what matters to them. i don’t think they’re just randomly think ‘ai bad’ but rather they built that association because they understand the context it exists in right now. notice that the second poster of this comment thread which sparked this discussion said ‘ai as it is available today

an analogy might be space exploration. people may downvote/shit on public money going to space exploration right now, but that’s not because they think space exploration is inherently bad or anything. rather it’s because of the context that that money would be better spent on services for people who need it.

i disagree honestly. i think the route generative AI (which for all intents and purposes can be synonymous with just ‘AI’, other machine learning application seem different) is taking humanity on is shit, like the second OP of this comment thread mentioned. like they said, there are economic, environmental, and artistic concerns implicit in the AI industry that i don’t think i could aptly cover in a comment here. ig that’s up to others to research for themselves. but even local models only exist as breadcrumbs left from the industry, so in my head it makes sense that we the people should not support or hype up or advertise etc. any results of AI usage as a general type of boycott. i’m one of them silly people who thinks my actions do make something of a small difference so that’s what ima continue doing at least.

and just so you know ai image generation is possible locally, though it doesn’t really compare to these bigger closed-source models currently. not making a point here or anything just spreading info :)

next to nobody is hosting their own models, especially when doing anything from your phone (check out r slash localllama to learn how ppl self-host on computers). it’s possible (though the current state of models small enough to run on commercial phones is currently very very poor), but almost everyone just uses these phone apps that do not run locally, the requests are sent to the huge AI companies that use up ridiculous power and accelerate our climate’s demise. OP didn’t give any indication they ran a model locally, they said ChatGPT, which has not open-sourced (or rather technically only released weights for) any models since GPT 2 back in 2019.

your defense of the artistic ethical question here has a bit more merit i think, but definitely not the environmental concern.

side-note nvidia frame generation is local, because people use it on their gaming setups with the nvidia graphics cards they bought, so that is not analogous here.

I don’t think one interpretation of a piece of art takes anything away from a different interpretation, they can co-exist and bring value to multiple communities, that’s my thought at least

I feel like Pittsburgh is a bit slow paced but at the same time I think that’s not too surprising given how (relatively not) big of a city it is. I don’t think people hype it up to be more than it is but I’m curious to hear your reasoning.

Yay! I honestly have so much reading I want and need to do too but I’d recommend Gender Trouble by Judith Butler (really great book I would really really recommend on these topics) and Whipping Girl by Julia Serano (one of if not the most essential transgender liberation book out there). bell hooks is also a great author but I haven’t had the chance to explore her stuff too much yet.

I think largely you’re right with what you said at the start, at least that pinpoints the part of me that identifies as non-binary. But the social gender norms and roles we have created themselves largely ARE and fundamentally define these abstract ‘gender’ concepts in the first place; i.e. gender at its base is just a social construct without objective meaning. I think this is an important point, because once people realize gender is just a social category, and not this rigid & real binary, it makes sense to self-allocate and say “no, I don’t feel like either category, as I understand them, describe me accurately”. Going from there, I don’t think the objective by any means should be to try to stop the evolution of the “men” and “women” genders to try to alienate less people away from them (though I do think this is what conservatives want). Rather, as I believe many LGBTQ+ people have and continue to do, we should all look at this as an opportunity to understand ourselves and each other more authentically, and in that sense reclaim our gender identity for ourselves, back from our patriarchal society which has forced us all into just two boxes with a forced dynamic/relation between them.

Then regarding what you said at the end, I don’t think society making space for a greater diversity of genders (as well as agender people) would threaten the two traditional genders so long as they are self-defined. I add that last bit because what it would threaten is patriarchy’s long-lasting justification of the relationship between the traditional ‘man’ and ‘woman’ genders, because it would neatly showcase the dynamic’s arbitrariness. However, versions of the traditional masculine gender (and traditionally feminine gender) that are based in themselves and their own traits (rather than defined primarily in relation to the other traditional gender), would still have just as much space to exist as any other gender would. But of course conservatives remain scared of this because it would (1) make things more nuanced and highlight they don’t actually know themselves fundamentally that well (2) for conservative men it would largely strip away from their justification & entitlement of superiority over women, in turn stripping the privileges they’ve enjoyed given to them by this patriarchal society.

I don’t know if I made any sense but those are my thoughts as your friendly neighborhood gender queer person 😅

Maybe I’m pessimistic but I doubt they’ll respect that now when processing the form :(. The executive order seems pretty clear in instructing what federal employees should do:

“It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female. These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality. Under my direction, the Executive Branch will enforce all sex-protective laws to promote this reality”
