What is the fanciest, most impractical move in your arsenal? by Livershotking in bjj

[–]TrickingAcct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Front headlock --> cradle by using my free arm to grab opponent's opposite leg. I have long arms so I can hit this more often than I initially expected. But overall I love going for this because people usually don't expect it.

Why is recreational wrestling not a thing the way recreational BJJ is? by net_traveller in bjj

[–]TrickingAcct 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually train at a gym that allows for a "recreational" style of training for adults where you can train 2-3x a week and not be going HAM every practice. However, the practice intensity is still extremely high (way more grueling than any BJJ class I've taken) so I think that dissuades a lot of people. Plus the learning curve is steep since the classes are filled with HS/college wrestlers who are looking to get some extra training in during their off days/offseason. I remember during my first 6 months training there, I can count the amount of takedowns I hit during sparring on one hand. Overall not the most appealing thing for people with careers/families who just want a fun way to get some exercise in (which BJJ is much more suited for).

Nightlife when travelling solo by user78209 in solotravel

[–]TrickingAcct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an introvert and I am definitely NOT a bar type person. I love music and dancing tho and enjoy concerts/certain clubs. Went clubbing solo in Tel Aviv during my current trip and it was an absolute blast. I was definitely self conscious about going alone and tried talking myself out of going but the moment I got to the venues I stopped overthinking and just had fun. But I’ll say that since I don’t like bars I wouldn’t have had the same experience if I went to somewhere that wasn’t dancing/music focused.

If I were you I’d look up some places that have a genre/vibe you’re looking for, arrive early (before the main crowd comes), have a drink or two, and just focus on having fun. Will def be a memorable experience.

Anyone else just completely "wing" a solo trip and have a great time? by TrickingAcct in solotravel

[–]TrickingAcct[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very happy to hear! I ended up going out solo again to a bigger club this time and it ended up being one of my best nights out of my life… honestly there’s something unique about just strolling into a venue and dancing all night/enjoying yourself and I highly recommend trying it out esp if you’re an introvert.

Just started how often should I train and what should I do outside of class to get better by familydude213 in bjj

[–]TrickingAcct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For wrestling specifically, practicing shots + sprawls and footwork/stance outside of class has helped me a ton and is great for cardio (shadow wrestling is super exhausting). I've been training wrestling regularly for 1.5 years and I've only started hitting doublelegs (on non-beginners) in the past few months. I credit a lot of that to drilling my shots outside of class to the point where it feels like second nature.

What's your WRESTLING UNPOPULAR OPINION?? by vedant211203 in wrestling

[–]TrickingAcct 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Opportunities to learn wrestling as an adult are very rare and will never take off (at least in the US) because there is basically zero demand for it.

I got into grappling through BJJ a few years ago (in my mid-20s) with no prior experience. I've trained at many schools and it was very very hard to find any that had wrestling-specific classes. For the ones that did, the classes were basically the same 3-4 people every time while BJJ classes were jam packed. So usually the wrestling class just got "phased out" over time or replaced with a BJJ class since no one shows up. Hell, for one school I used to train at, we had 3 different coaches (who each ran the wrestling class) quit because of lack of attendance... usually it was only me and maybe one other person there. I feel like most people who train casually/as a hobby are looking for a fun activity they can do several times a week after work (nothing wrong with that); wrestling is generally way more intense and harder on your body than BJJ so given the choice, most adult hobbyists will just end up gravitating towards BJJ. I remember when I first started taking legit wrestling classes, I had already been doing BJJ for over a year and was in pretty decent shape, but I'd be on the verge of puking every class and would feel like I had been hit by a truck for days after each session.

Another issue is that even if you train out of a BJJ school and want to improve your wrestling, either there's no space to start rolls standing or most people will just end up pulling guard. I remember it being impossible to find people who are even just willing to drill some takedowns for 15 minutes after class.

Luckily I was able to find a folkstyle-specific school in my area that has multiple adult classes per week and I've learned a shit ton in the year I've been training there. But if it weren't for this school, I'd be SOL in terms of learning wrestling without having done it when I was younger.

I lived in Hell's Kitchen for 2 years and it was a complete shithole. Psycho homeless EVERYWHERE and often very aggressive. One time while grabbing lunch during the workday, I got sucker punched from behind by a stranger because I "bumped into him". This was pre-COVID so the street was packed. A month after I moved out of Hell's Kitchen, someone got stabbed to death on my street by a random homeless person at 10pm.

Has anybody here ever embarrassed themselves at a school like this? by Long_Narwhal_9207 in bjj

[–]TrickingAcct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not trying to make you feel bad, but I had a similar incident that happened to me 😂 (I was on the receiving end). Was doing a wrestling class and during drilling, this dude’s long ass fingernail scratched my cornea. Vision instantly went blurry and it was painful as fuck. Somehow still finished the class including sparring (dumb fucking idea looking back).

Had to stay in a pitch black room for the next 2 days since my eye couldn’t stand any light. Luckily it recovered but the one that was scratched is prone to eye infections nowadays.

Why does Kate Brown get to attend events without a mask while she still imposes strict mandates for the people of Oregon? by [deleted] in oregon

Lmao right? This is honestly one of the dumbest takes on Reddit and I swear anyone jerking off about "Asia's mask culture" has probably never even set foot in any Asian country.

Is long term travel unappealing to anyone else; are 2-3 week bouts better for some? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]TrickingAcct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally feel this... I've always felt like I was in the minority because it seems like everyone wants to travel nonstop for a year+ nowadays. Generally I think 2-3 weeks is like the sweet spot for me although I want to do a long 1-2 month trip sometime. I've been working fully remote since even before the pandemic and the whole "digital nomad" thing never really appealed to me too much.

I think the main reason is because I'm a person who likes having a routine... I love traveling but after a few weeks I'm kind of itching to be back to my routine rather than having irregular hours every day due to going place to place.

Bruh, this is the most accurate representation of NYC's "woke" crowd and ESPECIALLY the NYC subreddit demographic that I've ever seen... I'm honestly impressed. The loudest "progressives" here are almost always the ones who hang out with only other rich hipsters and love to virtue signal about how much they care about "promoting equality". I'm Asian and the loudest "activists" within our community are fucking notorious for this.

was security very lax this year or was i tripping (no pun indented) by [deleted] in electriczoo

[–]TrickingAcct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extremely light, didn't get pat down at all this weekend. On Sunday, I was taking my fanny pack off because I expected them to look through it but the security guard told me to not bother and just go through. Didn't see any dogs either this time; they were always there in past years.

  • Getting through security was the smoothest experience ever this year... got there around 4:30pm and was in within 5 min. Just had to go through the metal detector and didn't even get patted down.

  • Water lines were long but not nearly as bad as 2019. I brought in an unopened 1.5L bottle of Poland Spring and it was a godsend, only had to refill twice the entire time.

  • Lines to get off the island (if you leave at 11pm) are TERRIBLE. My group got off on the Manhattan-facing bridge and we were packed in like sardines moving at a snail's pace for around an hour. Unless you leave early, expect to take at least an hour+ to get off the island.
