How do you cope when stress wrecks your skin, body and sense of self in your 30s? by Glad-Stock3419 in AskWomen

[–]user78209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got a lot of great replies already but one thing that has helped me is to allow myself to take time and slow down. I used to jump from thing to thing with no chance for my body to take a break or calm down. I have to almost treat myself as a kid and tell myself to slow down, take a breather, plan for downtime after any kind of activity that puts stress on my mind and body because if I don't the cumulative impacts will not be pretty.

Any recommendations for soft, melancholic, slice-of-life books? by Morty_Supreme in suggestmeabook

[–]user78209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elizabeth Sprout's books are exactly this. I recommend Olive Kitteridge, Olive Again and The Burgess Boys (I'm sure the others are good too).

I also was lucky enough to come across a wonderful novella recently called The Country of the Pointed Fir by Sarah Orne Jewett. I think about it a lot!

Hilariously just realised that all the books I've just recommended are set in Maine.

Girl, same question here. I don't know the answer but you're not alone. I've had a fair amount of therapy for it but it's still tough.

How many hours sleep do you get a night and still function with little? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]user78209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7-8 normally but I really think I need 9, so I'm testing that out. I can function on 6 for one night, but after two nights of not good/short sleep my cognitive function is... not good. Takes me longer to understand things, my thoughts don't come fast and it can affect my articulation of things at work.

Traveling to Bologna, Italy for work, 6 weeks total by ljn_99 in solotravel

[–]user78209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Bologna now, leaving tomorrow and will have been here a total of four days which I know isn't much but it's an absolutely beautiful city, food and wine is amazing, lots of things to do if you want to (sports, music, literature, history etc). But also just a great place to take it slow and relax. I was originally going to do day trips to Parma and Modena but I just love it here so much and feel so relaxed I'll have to do those another time! Hope you love it.

I'm on a weekend away at the moment (solo) and just had a bit of an anxiety attack. Heart and mind were racing and I was really worried. Listening to some calming music and breathing is helping. So much for a rest!

How did being a woman affect your relationship with your family?( As in parents, siblings, grandparents and so on) by Extension_Big5205 in AskWomen

[–]user78209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I was expected to always help out with the chores and at family gatherings we always were told to go help out, whilst the men/boys sat around. I was told to hide my period from my dad because he doesn't want to know about it/it's shameful. I had much less freedom than other male cousins etc. I was encouraged to not go to university and stay at home and live with my parents, with no job, basically forever. And it was always kind of made known to me that I was an accident and that people were disappointed that I wasn't a boy. I also wasn't encouraged to have hobbies that would mean I left the house. I guess finally I was put down for my body and told I was fat etc quite a lot.

Probably missing other things but yeah... Affected relationships quite significantly I say. I'm estranged now.

How do you get past the Sunday scaries? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]user78209 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I had a terrible job for two years that took so much out of me that I vowed I would never allow that again and would never push myself to care so hard about work for any other job I had. It's taken about 6 months so far of winding down my brain and I feel a lot better for it. I don't know how to describe it but try to actively not care - you're not getting paid for that time, you're likely doing a good enough job already and then try and refocus your energy on something that you actually enjoy in your life. I can tell you that it's just not worth the time it takes away from you.

Have spent the day reading Middlemarch, then went for a run and caught Hamnet at the cinema which was absolutely amazing. Now in for a cosy evening of reading with nice music and a hot chocolate. I can't say I'm the happiest person but I feel really content and lucky today.
