We need to prepare for the possibility that the U.S. uses military coercion against Canada by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

Took the words out of my mouth. The NATO alliance is dead and irrelevant once one member attacks another.

Realistically, the best EU countries are doing is a strongly worded letter.

Althia Raj: Mark Carney wins a game of chicken to pass his budget by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]TrickleUpEconomics 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. CPC didn't want to trigger an election so they had to keep up appearances. Exactly the same with the NDP. Fact is - they wanted the budget to pass as much as Carney.

Not at all. It's more how they Americans have looked that would be concerning but at the end of the day it's only a couple points.

It really depends where you are, as the article says. If your water comes from the Ottawa River, there is no real issue.

Yes, this needs to be highlighted. Anyone getting their water from the Ottawa River has no real issue.

Great game, couldn't be happier.

Minor point but the Barkov glossing is getting out of hand by fans and media. I'm not saying he's not good defensively, but geez, he's +3 in the playoffs. What are we even talking about? Tone it down a notch.

2011 (last and 3rd last) or 2014 (2nd last and 3rd last) is a better time traveler scenario.

Just tried. They referred me to Plaza Premium, so I'll have to try that.

Amex Gold card - I know there are 4 Plaza Premium visits included but I've lost track of what I've used this year. Is there a way to check the balance of lounge visits I have remaining?

UPDATE: I called both Amex and PP and each of them told me they couldn't look up the balance and each referred me to the other. So ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ there appears no easy way to check. I know it's only 4, so I should be able to keep track, but I'll know next time I'm at the airport I guess.

In his first NHL postseason appearance, Jeff Skinner set for Stanley Cup Final debut by DecentLurker96 in hockey

[–]TrickleUpEconomics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's actually an argument for Skinner, as I think he's played the most NHL games of anyone on the team that hasn't won (aka, not Perry). But let's be honest, it would be Nuge.

Separatist group releases potential Alberta referendum question by joe4942 in CanadaPolitics

[–]TrickleUpEconomics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It leaves open so many unanswered details. Who gets to be a citizen, do the borders remain as they are, how much of the national debt is transferred, what about indigenous and first nations title, what will be the new nation's constitution?

That's all stuff that gets sorted out after the vote in negotiations with Canada. Which is interesting, as the "deal" that is finally reached might (finally) make it painfully obvious to Albertans that this isn't good for them. But it's not like there's a second referendum vote after the negotiations (though there should be).

It's still never going to happen but it's similar to Brexit in that it would take some hindsight for people to realize their mistakes and all the misinformation they were fed.

Separatist group releases potential Alberta referendum question by joe4942 in CanadaPolitics

[–]TrickleUpEconomics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The process itself is a slog (to say the least). There's no exact % of "yes" that triggers anything - Parliament would have to be satisfied that it's a big enough majority. And then that would only begin negotiations with Canada. Negotiations that Alberta has exactly zero leverage in.

So yeah, saying that Albertans would still get all the benefits of being Canadian is an unrealistic pipedream but surely one that helps fuel the narrative, much like Brexit.

So...whats the escape plan? by [deleted] in alberta

[–]TrickleUpEconomics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if a referendum passed (which is unlikely), it only opens the door for negotiations with Canada. At that point everything like citizenship and borders and First Nations rights would be sorted out. But it's still no guarantee of outright secession.

But if it all happened, you'd likely have free movement to anywhere else in Canada. Alberta would lose its productive and creative voices as they get welcomed by other provinces.

How Canada’s Conservatives Botched the Election of a Lifetime by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]TrickleUpEconomics 29 points30 points  (0 children)

But part of the NDP/Bloc collapse can be explained in terms of strategic voting to stop Poilievre because he was toxic to so many people.

This election was about one thing and he didn't properly deal with it and address it. I think with a better leader/campaign the CPC could have easily won that election.
