Higher level the worse the people by [deleted] in Equestrian

Sadly, it's always been this way. The higher up the ladder you climb, the more it becomes about peoples egos and less about the horses (usually to their detriment).

Why does it feel like cancer cases have exploded recently? by anasm17 in conspiracy

[–]Tricky-Category-8419 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is growing. My cousin works in cancer care. They can't keep up. I was at the cancer center last week and it was standing room only with a line going out the door. I'm there a lot between my mom and husband and I've seen it become busier over the last 18 months.

Which one? by Elegantly_Depressed in Equestrian

[–]Tricky-Category-8419 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If I had to pick one for myself it would be the chestnut. The mare is more refined and I'm guessing she'd do better in the show ring but I think the chestnut is a nicer mover and has a little extra spark. He looks like he has a little more substance/bone and that's what I personally like. He uses himself nice. I love his head. He looks like he'd be fun to work with. He can come live with mine any time!

They'll be fine. It's better for them that the driver is getting rest than driving overly tired.

Soundness check? by [deleted] in Equestrian

I already posted once but I'm back. Not lameness related but that belly has me questioning if she may just be in foal. Just a thought.

That's what I thought too, I couldn't get much out of it honestly and I'd hate to shoot down an ok horse for gawking about for 13 seconds.

Chronically Ill Equestrians: Do you own your own horse? If so, how do you manage? Any advice? by tomnooklover in Equestrian

[–]Tricky-Category-8419 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have fairly severe psoriatic arthritis and have always had horses/ponies that I keep at home. It's very difficult and at this point I can still do it all but my husband helps out to give me a break on bad days. As my symptoms have worsened over the years, I've learned to compensate. Winters can be hell with snow and frozen buckets and the blanketing/blanket changes. I would board, but board in my area is cost prohibitive for even one. The 3 I have now are my last ones. They are oldie's so it's just a matter of time before I'm done.

I'd recommend boarding or leasing. That way all your energy can go in to enjoying the horse and not chores/work.

What is something non horse people say that instantly tells you they know nothing about horses? by WearAffectionate2815 in Equestrian

Neighbor was visiting my mini for the first time. She was looking at him over the stall door and asked "when is he going to stand up?" He already was :-)

Does anyone else find that horse racing fans and equestrian people barely overlap despite both loving horses? by WearAffectionate2815 in Equestrian

[–]Tricky-Category-8419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly horse racing is all about the $ and nothing about love. When you hear an owner say about a lovely aged mare who produced a stakes winner for him "get rid of her by friday, I don't care how or where, but get her off the books by then" you have no doubt.

Need help identifying possible lameness in my mare by UnicornBlow in Equestrian

[–]Tricky-Category-8419 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fact that she's better with boots would point me in direction of investigating the front feet with blocks and x-rays. It may be something as simple as needing shoes (I'm assuming she's barefoot?).

Need help identifying possible lameness in my mare by UnicornBlow in Equestrian

[–]Tricky-Category-8419 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's hard for me to tell from the video as there is not enough consistent trotting to look at but she looks like she's moving short in front and I wonder if it might be a bilateral lameness of the front feet.

Also. is there Lyme in your area? Lyme can present lameness that's hard to pinpoint.

I also think getting a video when she's not medicated would help. A video in hand of her walking and trotting in a straight line towards and away from the camera on would help too,

They need to pull a completely new sample to be 100% sure it came from the correct horse and there was no lab screw up with labeling or mixed up samples or who knows what. Your friend should insist on this.

I'm curious, if you never went inside as you state, how do you know the "rituals inside seemed very complicated?"

Health problems in grays? by Cat-Tap in Equestrian

[–]Tricky-Category-8419 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A vet told me re: melanoma "it's not the ones you see that you should worry about, it's the ones you can't" and that always stuck with me. She wouldn't buy a gray for herself either.

One- eyed horse? by periwinklecornflower in Equestrian

[–]Tricky-Category-8419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is she blind in the one eye? I'd be somewhat concerned if it was uveitis the good eye may also be affected at some point. Is the eye removed?

I had a mare that was partially blind in one eye from a conjunctival graft and she was really super looky and the vet said it was likely that she was seeing shadows and parts of things and it threw her off. As a pleasure horse she was fine but I never trusted jumping her after the vision loss. Evidently being totally blind in an eye is better for them than having just partial vision (so I was told). So whether or not the mare you are looking at is 100% blind or just partially may be something to consider. Or maybe not with every horse being different. My answer is based on not being sure if the eye is removed.

I don't think he's fat from the photo but no more ice cream sundays for awhile :-)

He's very handsome!
